NEW
Enrichment on our Doorstep!
I am pleased to provide details of our Enrichment Programme, all for £15 a day or less,
giving you an opportunity to try something new and enhance your education without having
to spend too much money.
Whatever you choose, please put your choices in order of preference on the form on the
back page and we will do our best to place you in as many of your favourite options as
possible.
Make sure to get your forms back to us by Friday 12th May so we can finalise the details.
PLEASE NOTE: TRIPS WILL RUN SUBJECT TO NUMBERS. IF NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE
SIGN UP FOR A TRIP THEN IT WILL NOT RUN AND YOU WILL, HOPEFULLY, GET
YOUR NEXT CHOICE.
Enrichment is an important part of the calendar at Chulmleigh Community College which
enables students to experience a variety of activities, intended to enhance their
development. Students will be required to participate fully and the normal College timetable
will be suspended for the 20th and 21st July.
Attendance
We regard Enrichment Week as an important part of students’ education and expect normal
attendance.
Payment for Activities
The expected cost is listed on each activity page, which may vary slightly once numbers
have been verified. The full cost of each activity is payable as a voluntary contribution.
Activities can only take place if there are sufficient voluntary contributions. If there
are not enough voluntary contributions the activity will be cancelled.
Compose real music in a day
Thursday– FREE
Are you a musician who can read music? Would you like to write your own music,
hear it performed and even produce professional looking printed music? How about a
day working with the same (very expensive) software as the top professional composers and students up to degree level?
By the end of this one day intensive workshop for budding composers you will have a
printed copy and a recording of your composition to take home.
Don’t wait until GCSE to try your hand at the professionals’ choice. Places are strictly
limited, so make this your first choice and get your form in a.s.a.p.
Bring lots of imagination, a sense of adventure and your own headphones if you have
some.
Build Your Own Skateboard deck
Thursday—£5
This one day activity will take you through the entire
process of designing, constructing and finishing your very
own skateboard deck.
Copying the classic longboard style you will learn exactly
what it takes to make your own brand new deck. You will
cut the wood into shape, glue the component parts together
shape the blank and then finish it ready for the trucks and
wheels. NB– you will need to provide your own trucks and
wheels.
Bushcraft
Thursday or Friday—FREE
If you prefer to spend your time outside in the
natural world, working under a bright blue sky, then
this could be the activity for you. You will have the
opportunity to learn some practical conservation
skills aimed at maintaining and preserving an area
of natural beauty. Exact activities will depend on
what needs doing, but last year’s group learnt how
to use a saw and scythe and how to build a bush
fire. They also helped to mend a dam and built
some steps using natural materials. No experience
or skills necessary, just a willingness to have a go.
Ten Tors Taster
Thursday or Friday — from £6 per day
Have you got a taste for the outdoors? Have you
considered doing the Ten Tors Challenge whilst at
school but don’t know quite what this would entail?
Would you like to learn to use a map and compass
and find out how to navigate from point to point? If
the answer is yes then the Ten Tors Taster is for
you.
You can choose either one or two days where you
will trek the moors from tor to tor over some of the
country’s most dramatic wild areas. You will be
divided into small groups (according to speed and
friends) and follow different routes each day so you
really get the feel of what the Ten Tors Challenge
might be like.
Budding Authors
Thursday or Friday—FREE
Got a passion for writing? See yourself
published one day? Crime? Fantasy?
Romance? What ever your genre,
experience a day where you can get
inspiration, learn some new techniques
and share your writing in a supportive
atmosphere.
Please note that this is a one day activity ie
only chose it for one day!
Mind Gym at the Movies
Thursday—FREE
"The unexamined life is not worth living" (Socrates).
How much do we really think about what we see in
the cinema or on a DVD? Often the otherworldly
realms of fantasy and science-fiction give us insights
into how to understand our own reality in the ‘here
and now.’
We'll choose a movie (or two?) from a selection of
classics and blockbusters to watch and discuss, then
explore the themes through a variety of enquiry-based
activities. If you love a good film and
enjoy a good chat, then this day is for
you! (We will go outside and get some
fresh air at some point, I promise. At
least, I think I do...)
Woodlands
Thursday—£15
An action packed day out at probably
the best theme park in Devon. Indoor
and outdoor adventures and rides
mean that you will have a great time
whatever the weather. There is also a
zoo farm and falconry displays.
Bake off
Thursday or Friday—up to £5 as a
contribution towards ingredients
Enjoy baking?– this is your chance to take
your skills to the next level. You will produce
a variety of baked products including a
technical challenge and hopefully a ‘show
stopper!’
Ice Skating Plymouth
Friday—£15
A classic ice skating experience on a
spacious rink with good quality skate hire.
You will have up to 2 hours of skating at
Plymouth Pavilions and will then visit either
Plymouth Hoe or Drake’s Circus (depending
on the weather for lunch).
Laser Tag
Thursday or Friday—£15
A Laser Tag environment will be created on
the front field by using a portable inflated
arena. The marshal will explain the game
scenario and off to battle we go.
 Realistic sounding Hi-tech guns fire a
harmless infra-red beam to a range of
400 meters
 Unlimited ammo and lives.
 Great fun
Tarka Trail Cycling
Friday—£15
You will collect hire bikes at the Puffing Billy in
Torrington then ride along the Tarka Trail
passing some stunning scenery as you go. The
trail is flat and has a tarmac surface which
means the riding is relatively easy. After five
miles you will pass Bideford, then it’s on to
Instow where you will stop for lunch and an ice
cream. The more enthusiastic riders will have
the opportunity to ride further along the trail
before turning around and returning to
Torrington.
Drama Prop making
Friday—FREE
An opportunity for those of you with artistic/
creative enthusiasm to create the props which
will be used for the Midsummer Night’s Dream
performance next term.
Paignton Zoo
Thursday or Friday—£15
With over 2,000 animals across 80 acres –
you’re in for a really wild time at Paignton Zoo.
Paignton Zoo is one of the South West's most
exciting visitor attractions. It’s a place to roam,
discover and get in touch with your inner
animal.
Get up close to some of the animal wonders of
the world across our specially designed
habitats - from the savannah to the wetlands
and the tropical forest. Hop aboard our unique
Jungle Express train to get even closer to the
action.
