Gordie Center UVa Efforts ADAPT Founded in 1999, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team is comprised of trained peer educators who promote awareness, provide educational outreach, and serve as resources for their fellow students on alcohol use and drug abuse as well as bystander intervention. HOOS IN RECOVERY Founded in 2006, Hoos in Recovery is UVA’s support network for students, staff, faculty, and alumni in recovery from substance abuse and addiction. 2 ADAPT averages 50 presentations to UVA student groups every year. SAFE HALLOWEEN Students pledge to keep their friends safe by acting as active bystanders, knowing the signs of alcohol overdose, and getting help when necessary. Pledge incentives have included cups, candy, phone pockets, fanny packs, and laptop stickers. REMEMBER THE GAME Before the last home football game, Substance Abuse Prevention Week includes a Bodo’s bagel brunch, a keynote speaker, and the fourth-year pledge drive. Fourth-years pledge not to participate in the “4th-year fifth” in exchange for a FREE long-sleeved t-shirt and a cup. SAFE SPRING BREAK Students pledge to watch out for themselves and their friends, not drink and drive, and plan to play smart over Spring Break in exchange for SSB Safety packs, phone pockets, stickers, cups, and key chains. meetings per week (one lunch, one coffee). 120 members on the Hoos in Recovery listserv. 500% increase in Hoos in Recovery membership in the 2016–2017 school year! Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students is a one-on-one, non-judgmental risk assessment that helps students identify potential changes and avoid future problems. 90% Founded in 1989 and replicated at NCAA schools across the country, UVA’s 78 Student-Athlete Mentors (representing all 23 varsity athletic teams—700+ student-athletes) promote health and wellness to their teammates. 78 SAMs goals: promote healthy lifestyles, educate about the benefits of low-risk drinking choices, and create a safer social environment for UVA student-athletes. SAMs SAY POSTER SERIES SAMs create 8 posters annually which are hung in all varsity locker rooms. Posters cover health and wellness issues ranging from hazing and nutrition to mental health and substance abuse. Poster series won the 2014 NASPA Excellence Bronze Award BASICS 150 STUDENT-ATHLETE MENTORS UVA students complete BASICS annually. of BASICS participants would recommend the program to a friend. SHOOT OUT FOR CANCER Founded in 1993 and sponsored by SAMs, this fun, carnival-style event each April allows children and families to meet and play games with UVA athletes. Since 2009, the event has raised over $25,000 for the UVA Cancer Center. $25K GORDIE CENTER UNIVERSITY-WIDE OUTREACH The Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention provides evidence-informed materials to UVA students and student-athletes on the signs of alcohol overdose (PUBS). 8,000 GORDIEcheck BAC Cards and Student-Athlete BAC cards given to UVA students every year. Every UVA residence hall features Gordie Center PUBS Magnets and Mirror Clings on all refrigerators and bathroom mirrors. SAVVY FOX CAMPAIGN The week before the Foxfield Spring Races, students pledge to be active bystanders, practice safe drinking habits, and not drink and drive at Foxfield. Students who pledge receive a free t-shirt; ADAPT presents Foxfield education sessions to student groups; on race day, ADAPT mans a safety tent with free snacks and water. The Gordie Center outfitted 38 University Transit System buses with advertisements educating riders on the signs of alcohol overdose and publicizing Hoos in Recovery meetings.
