Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple ® Keynote, and Google Slides are some of these popular software apps, with PowerPoint being the most common data format supported by all. Many trainers, instructors and teachers use presentation software to deliver learning ® content, but its effectiveness is limited. The new system that LiberCloud is introducing transforms a slideshow delivery into a new more effective and efficient method for instructional content and for collaboration that engages the audience with interactive canvas slides and polls. Using LiberCloud Slideshows with Microsoft PowerPoint in Instruction Materials Using existing presentation software for instruction materials A key tenet of managing instruction materials is the ability to reuse content in different scenarios or classrooms and therefore having the ability to share materials easily is important. New cloud-based presentation or slideshow apps allow users to create files directly on the cloud and share them more easily. Microsoft PowerPoint Online and Google Slides are two examples. While these online systems are better for sharing and collaborating than their desktop counterparts they still carry the inefficiency of managing entire presentations as monolithic data, i.e. reusing individual slides in their native format into external content, such as a learning management system, web books or online courses, is difficult. Cloud-based presentation software, such as PowerPoint Online, has introduced capabilities for co-authoring content and “working together” on the same content at the same time. This document-based or slide-based collaboration is a step forward in making it easier to collaborate on authoring content than desktop software. However, in a learning environment or classroom, a canvas-based system can be more productive and more effective to brainstorm ideas and develop concepts in a group even when viewing a slideshow. Using PowerPoint with LiberCloud for instruction materials LiberCloud has been designed for collaboration and content reuse. Its seamless integration with the cloud-based version of presentation software brings some of these important benefits to slideshows as well, and making slideshows better suited for delivery of instructional content. The first of such seamless integrations is with Microsoft Office Online1, which will be available in the early summer of 2016. A slideshow in LiberCloud is a collection of learning assets that an author wants to deliver to an audience in a slideshow manner, i.e. progressing from slide to slide manually or automatically. The author can add to the slideshow a PowerPoint slide deck plus additional asset types depending on the intended audience. Asset types available on LiberCloud are rich text, interactive canvas, hosted video or embedded from ® YouTube , images and snapshots of drawings created in canvas, assessments, surveys, and polls. The author can either upload an existing PowerPoint slide deck or create new slides from scratch using the PowerPoint Online editor. The slideshow itself becomes an asset that can be combined with other assets in a LiberPage, the building block for lesson plans, assignments, collaboration and content sharing in LiberCloud. ® © 2016 LiberCloud . Reuse individual slides: the new system improves upon the monolithic approach of traditional presentation software and makes it easier to share individual slides. The important benefit to authors is that now they can incorporate those individual slides – charts or diagrams that they have spent so much time creating – in their native format with animation and everything into external learning or instructional content. LiberCloud makes it easier to find those slides, without having to browse through entire presentations, and easier to reuse them without duplicating content. 2. Brainstorm ideas with canvas-based slides: LiberCanvas is a web and mobile app that lets users write and draw on a shared canvas as well as record content that can then be shared as videos. While PowerPoint Online real-time collaboration allows multiple authors to co-edit a PowerPoint file at the same time, canvas-based slides in a slideshow make it easier for authors as well as viewers to brainstorm ideas using a virtual whiteboard. For example, a group assignment could be delivered as a viewonly slideshow, with background info provided in PowerPoint and with a canvas slide that they can write on and collaborate in real-time. 3. Engage audience with Polls: by allowing PowerPoint slide decks to be combined with other assets makes it easier and more efficient to create and package learning and instructional content by relying on complementary asset types for such purposes. For example, combining PowerPoint with LiberCloud’s polls allows a trainer or teacher to embed easily and seamlessly polls in a slideshow to engage the audience and collect results to gauge comprehension. 4. Embed PowerPoint and slideshows in online courses: the integration of LiberCloud with PowerPoint gives LiberCloud users the ability to leverage on existing PowerPoint content and skills, and it gives PowerPoint users the ability to leverage on LiberCloud’s instructional content delivery methods, such as LiberBooks, and summative and formative assessments.2 ® © 2016 LiberCloud . Make communication more personal with audio-visual annotations: LiberCloud makes it easier to create and exchange audio-visual annotations on individual slides or an entire presentation thus making communication and collaboration more personal and effective, in particular with the current generation of students who prefer using mobile devices over traditional desktops or laptops. Summary LiberCloud Slideshows are another content delivery method for instructional content similar to online courses, web books, or eBooks. An author typically embeds the slideshow in a LiberPage, the building block for lesson plans, courses and assignments. Alternatively, users can share the slideshow URL or embed it an external web page. LiberCloud Slideshows make PowerPoint Online even better because all slides in PowerPoint presentations are immediately available for reuse individually. It’s easier to find individual slides and easier to reuse them, without duplicating slides. LiberCloud with PowerPoint gives PowerPoint users the ability to easily combine their presentations with interactive canvas slides and polls to engage audience, and the ability to embed their content in LiberPages, LiberBooks and Courses, with little effort, giving them the ability to use formal assessments as well – all integrated under one coherent system, instead of relying on dissimilar and disjointed systems. Furthermore, users can create and exchange audio-visual annotations on PowerPoint slides more easily using the natural interface of LiberCanvas. This is a great time saver to provide feedback on projects or assignments. PowerPoint with LiberCloud is still the familiar PowerPoint but it’s a better PowerPoint. 1 PowerPoint Online is Microsoft’s proprietary service.
