Only two men signed
the Declaration of
Independence on July
4th 1776 — John Hancock and
Charles Thomson.
Jefferson changed the wording of
the Declaration of Independence
from “the pursuit of property” to
“the pursuit of happiness.”
Congress declared July 4th as an
official holiday in 1870 as part of
a bill to officially recognize other
holidays, such as Christmas.
The Declaration of Independence
was a justification for a revolt
against the British which included
a list of charges against the British
king.
The average age of those who
signed the Declaration of
Independence was 45. The
youngest at age 27, was Thomas
Lynch, Jr. of South Carolina. The
oldest delegate was Benjamin
Franklin of Pennsylvania, age 70.
Those who won our
independence believed liberty
to be the secret of happiness and
courage to be the secret of liberty.
~Louis D. Brandeis
National Wheelchair
Beautification Month
Decorating
your wheelchair
can brighten your
day and put a
smile on the face
of those you pass!
There are some easy ways to
add a little fun to your
wheelchair without spending
much money. Try adding
color by using ribbons tied
into bows, or affix a small
water tube near the top of the
wheelchair and add in a
single fresh-cut flower.

Bring on the fireworks! This
Independence Day we celebrate
the Congressional Declaration of
July 4, 1776 that “these United
Colonies are, and of right ought
to be free and independent
states,” which changed the status
of all Americans from colonists of

I Scream, You Scream,
We All Scream for Ice Cream!
The first ice cream parlor opened
in 1776 in New York City.
More ice cream is sold on Sunday than
any other day of the week.
The average number of licks required to
polish off a single-scoop cone is about
fifty.
The favorite topping for ice cream is
chocolate syrup.
The biggest ice cream sundae ever made
weighed 22.59 tons. It included 18.38
tons of ice cream, 3.98 tons of syrup, and
537 pounds of toppings.
All but about two percent of American
households purchase ice cream.

The First Dollars
As soon as Congress approved
the Declaration of Independence,
John Hancock sent a copy to George
Washington, so that the Commander-inChief would be notified that the
American
colonies
were
formally
separated from Great Britain.
Next, the people had to be notified.
The Declaration was soon read to a
crowd, and the text was printed
immediately. By the 8th of July, it was
the lead story in one of the newspapers
of the day, Dunlap’s Pennsylvania
Packet.
Three weeks after the Declaration
was signed, the country’s first dollars
were issued. There was a three dollar
bill, a seven dollar bill and even a
thirty dollar bill. The emblem on the
three dollar bill was an eagle fighting
a heron with the motto, “Exitus in
dubio est” (the outcome is in doubt).

Resident Spotlight
Our spotlight resident this month is
Maple Pride. We choose her for her joyful
spirit, always smiling and laughing. Ms.
Pride always has a quick and inventive
comeback. She said, “I love to make
people laugh.”
“I love my home here (has lived here
for 9 years on July 25th) and so lucky my
nephew helped me find a place where I
get good food and feel safe.” I go to
bingo, groups where we cook or bands
play (I like to dance in my chair). I have
many good friends here and my family
visits all the time.
In this picture she is participating in
the bean bag toss competition. WMC
Action News 5 Sports Director Jarvis
Greer served as the master of ceremonies
at Bellevue Baptist Church and presented
Allenbrooke Health and Rehabilitation
with the overall Most Spirited Facility
Award. “We showed out,” Mrs. Pride
added when showing me her medal.
Nineteen nursing facilities displayed
banners designed by residents, and there
were five people over the age of 100 who
participated in the games.

Little drops of water, little grains of sand,
Make the mighty ocean,
and the pleasant land;
so the little minutes,
humble though they be,
make the mighty ages, of eternity.
Little deeds of kindness,
little words of love,
Help to make earth happy,
like Heaven up above.
~Julia Carney
Roswell UFO Days, July 1st-4th
In July 1947, a strange flying object
crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New
Mexico. The Roswell Army Air Field, a military
flying school, issued a statement that a crashed
“flying disk” was recovered. The local
newspaper, the Roswell Daily Record, ran a front
page article about the event, and the next day,
the air base changed its statement to say that the
object was a weather balloon, not a flying disk
after all. This revised statement sparked
immediate controversy and continues to be a
topic of contentious debate.
