Disabled Access Guide for Adam House. This building has in part been adapted for use by persons in wheelchairs and persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. Introduction. Adam House is the location of the university's main examination halls throughout term time and turns into a venue for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival during August. The building houses a fully equipped theatre in the basement. Location. Adam House is located within what is referred to as the Central Campus of the University of Edinburgh which is well served by public transport. The building is within approximately a quarter of a mile of the city centre and is within approximately one mile of the main student residences at Pollock Halls. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city centre. The nearest bus stops are located on South Bridge in excess of 100 metres of Adam House. Numerous bus services stop on South Bridge (see map on the following page). Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from: http://www.mybustracker.co.uk. Persons arriving by vehicle can access Adam House from Chambers Street via South Bridge or George IV Bridge (see map on the following page). Persons with mobility difficulties and wheelchair users are able to access the building at the main entrance or at the secondary entrance (see map on the following page). Anyone wishing to park within a university bay must display a valid parking permit. This includes staff, students, visitors and contractors. There are two university car parks located off Chambers Street, to the rear of Minto House (see location map). Car park 1 image. Car park 2 image. These car parks are not recommended for use by wheelchair users or persons with mobility difficulties who intend to access Adam House; access from these car parks to Adam House is in excess of 120 metres and is via a vehicle access route which comprises granite setts. If you do not hold a valid permit and require use of a university bay, it is recommended that contact is made with Transport & Parking prior to your journey (see contact information page). Page 7. There are numerous City of Edinburgh Council ‘pay and display’ parking bays located along Chambers Street, within close proximity of Adam House. Chambers street is suitably surfaced for wheelchair users but there are limited drop kerbs to the adjacent footpaths and access from some of the bays along this street to the adjacent footpaths is via a busy road. Access at the main entrance is via either three steps, which do not incorporate handrails or a tactile surface at the top/bottom, or, a temporary ramp which can be made available upon request. If you require use of a temporary ramp, it is recommended that contact is made with your host or the Old College Servitors Office prior to your journey (see contact information page). Page 8. Wheelchair access to this building is not recommended without assistance. The main entrance door is double width, is heavy, opens inwards and is operated manually. There is a doorbell located to the right of the main entrance, beyond one of the aforementioned steps, which can be used to gain assistance. The doorbell is located within reach of wheelchair users. Main entrance image. Wheelchair access to Adam House is also possible via a secondary entrance which is located to the right of the main entrance, beyond a threshold ramp and a gate. However, the secondary entrance is not usually operational and can only be opened from the inside. If you intend to use this entrance it is therefore recommended that contact is made with your host or the Old College servitors office to arrange access prior to arrival (see contact information page). Internal Access. Upon entering Adam House at the secondary entrance, wheelchair access is up via a stairlift (see stairlift section). Reception. There is no reception. There is a temporary servitors desk located within the main entrance lobby, approximately 9 metres from the main entrance (see ground floor plan). Please note that this desk is usually unmanned. - The servitors desk is suitable for approach by wheelchair users and is recessed. - Lighting levels are good. - There is no induction loop. The servitors based in this office can provide assistance for wheelchair users and persons with mobility difficulties. The basement, ground, first, second and third floors are accessible by lift. - The lift call points are at an accessible height. - There is braille beside the lift call points which identifies the floor level. - The lift car controls are within comfortable reach of wheelchair users. - The control panel has braille markings. - The lift has an alarm and disabled refuge communication unit. - There is contrast between the lift wall and floor surfaces. - There is an audible announcer. - The lift has a mirror on the rear wall. - The lift car interior has a handrail on the rear wall. - The lighting level in the lift is not good. - The lift doors have pressure sensors. Stairlift. A stairlift provides wheelchair access up to the ground floor level from the secondary entrance (see ground floor plan). - The stairlift remains on at all times. - The stairlift is fully automated and can be operated without assistance. - There are control panels located at the top of the lift, at the bottom of the lift and on the lift (see ground floor plan). There is an accessible toilet on the basement floor. - There is a 30mm threshold at the base of the accessible toilet door, which is negotiable with care. - There is right hand lateral transfer space. - There is good manoeuvring space. - There is an emergency pull chord alarm. - The door opens outwards. - The width of the accessible toilet door is suitable for wheelchairs. - There are suitable dropdown and support rails for transfer. - The tap type is lever operation. - There is not a coat hook. - The contrast between the grab rails and walls is not good. - The contrast between the walls and floor is fair. - The lighting level in the cubicle is good.
