Course proposals must address all specified outcomes. a. BIOL / CHEM / GEOS / PHYS 180 address all seven outcomes as well as the laboratory requirement as specified by the University Studies Program. This is demonstrated below. 2. Documentation of Course Requirements and learning activities designed to meet the course outcomes specified for the area. Natural Science (with lab ‐ 7 S.H.) The purpose of the Natural Science requirement in the University Studies program is to provide students with the tools to understand and be able to apply the methods by which scientific inquiry increases our understanding of the natural world. Courses must be selected from an approved list; departments normally included in the Natural Sciences are Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience, and Physics. These courses must include requirements and learning activities that promote students’ abilities to… a. understand how scientists approach and solve problems in the natural sciences; b. apply those methods to solve problems that arise in the natural sciences; c. use inductive reasoning, mathematics, or statistics to solve problems in natural science; d. engage in independent and collaborative learning; Learning Activities and Assignments These three requirements are closely related in science. Class activities, discussions, and experiments examine many different theories of Physical Science (such as Newton’s Laws of Motion, Atomic Theory, etc.) as well as general ideas about the Nature of Science (how the scientific process works). Students will design experiments to test these different theories and models, take data, and analyze that data to determine relationships between the variables through graphing and statistics. Students will use their mathematical models to make predictions about other events governed by those theories. Scientists work both independently and through collaboration. Class activities will make use of both of these methods of working such that students will be asked to work on problems independently as well as in groups to complete in‐class, out‐of‐ class, and exam problems. e. identify, find, and use the tools of information science as it relates to natural science; f. critically evaluate both source and content of scientific information; and These two requirements are critically tied together in science. As students find information they must also be able to evaluate the quality of that information. g. recognize and correct scientific misconceptions. Identifying misconceptions is particularly important for future science educators such as the students in this course. In‐class and homework assignments will require that students work with the internet, reference books, science education texts, and other sources to critically evaluate scientific information as it relates to the course content. Common scientific misconceptions will be identified at the start of each topic, and class material will be directed toward correcting those misconceptions. Courses that satisfy the laboratory requirement in the Natural Sciences will additionally provide students the opportunity to practice scientific inquiry through hands‐on investigations and to analyze and report the results of those investigations. This course is taught as a merged lecture‐lab. Lecture is minimal and students generally work closely in groups with each other to complete assignments. During the laboratory portion of the course, students will have the opportunity to engage in hands‐on scientific investigation of natural phenomena and will be required to analyze and report the results of their investigations to each other and the instructors. 3. A course description (included in the syllabus and distributed to students) that clearly identifies the course as a University Studies Arts & Science Core: Natural Science with Lab. 4. The course description (included in the syllabus and distributed to students) also includes information that clearly identifies course activities and assignments that address the course requirements. These two requirements are included in the following statement that appears in the BIOL / CHEM / GEOS / PHYS 180 syllabus: University Studies Compliance This course qualifies as a University Studies course in the Natural Science with Laboratory category. If you successfully complete this course, you will have completed the laboratory requirement and 4 credits of Natural Science in the University Studies Program. The purpose of the Natural Science requirement in the University Studies program is to provide students with the tools to understand and be able to apply the methods by which scientific inquiry increases our understanding of the natural world. Courses that satisfy the Natural Science requirement must include requirements and learning activities that promote students' abilities to... a. understand how scientists approach and solve problems in the natural sciences; b. apply those methods to solve problems that arise in the natural sciences; c. use inductive reasoning, mathematics, or statistics to solve problems in natural science; d. engage in independent and collaborative learning; e. identify, find, and use the tools of information science as it relates to natural science; f. critically evaluate both source and content of scientific information; and g. recognize and correct scientific misconceptions. Courses that satisfy the laboratory requirement in the Natural Sciences will additionally provide students the opportunity to practice scientific inquiry through hands‐on investigations and to analyze and report the results of those investigations. Course activities described throughout the remainder of this syllabus will be coded to the above list of outcomes by the corresponding letter. These outcomes will be integrated throughout course content—each new topic will be presented in a manner in which the student will be able to understand and apply the methods by which scientists approach and solve problems in the natural sciences, using inductive reasoning or mathematics (outcomes a‐c). Common scientific misconceptions will be identified at the start of each topic, and class material will be directed toward correcting those misconceptions (outcome g). You will be asked to work collaboratively on certain in‐class and take‐home activities and independently on other assignments (outcome d). In‐class and homework assignments will require that you work with the internet, reference books, science education texts, and other sources to critically evaluate scientific information as it relates to the course content (outcomes e, f). During the laboratory portion of the course, you will have the opportunity to engage in hands‐on scientific investigation of natural phenomena, and you will be required to analyze and report the results of your investigations (laboratory outcome). 5. Sequences of courses may be submitted to satisfy area requirements. Requested material must be submitted for all of the courses in the sequence. Documentation for the second course in this sequence (BIOL / CHEM / GEOS / PHYS 185) is provided in a separate proposal. These two courses will be used by various education majors to fulfill their University Studies requirements. 6. The USS (GEP ) may request other material (i.e., textbooks) for review in evaluating this course proposal. 7. The USS (GEP) may request additional information for re‐approval. We are happy to provide any further information needed to evaluate the appropriateness of these courses within the University Studies, Arts & Science Core, Natural Science with Laboratory requirement.
