MEET THE NEW PRESIDENT
For the past 14 years, Dick
Codling served as the Vice
President for Veterans
Affairs for the Paul Revere
Chapter of the Air Force
Association. The night
before the last “Vettes to
Vets” event, the Department
of Veterans Affairs
presented him with the
award shown in the picture
above, for his dedication to
the Veterans in our local
area. During all his service
years with the chapter, Dick
hosted or supported over 40
events for veterans many of
which hosted over 200
veterans at a time and Dick
would network with as many
as four Veterans area
organizations to maximize
the support our chapter
could provide. Every
summer he would host a
summer BBQ at the Lowell
Veterans Community Care
Center (VCCC) and many
times would have a second
BBQ on Hanscom AFB. In
September he would host
the Vettes for Vets at the
Bedford VA Hospital. This
past fall, for his last Vettes
to Vets event, he fed over
1500 Veterans, caregivers,
Corvette owners and
volunteers. He ended up
every year planning a
Christmas Party for
homeless Veterans in the
Lowell, MA area and the
chapter held it at VFW Post
662. He always made sure
there were enough
hamburgers and sausages
for all his Veterans. He
loved his volunteers from
the Air Force Sergeants
Association who cooked and
served our local Veterans all
under his watchful eye. Dick
worked with many veteran
organizations to include the

retired to Florida with his
lovely wife, Helen, but still
calls us to make sure that we
are continuing the good work
and care for the many
Veterans, who have served
our country. All of us miss
Dick but we wish him well in
his well-earned retirement.

Hats off to Success: Cadet earns $15,000
Cadet O’Connor (center) takes
home $15,000, thanks to AFA! The
check was presented at the
chapter’s Holiday Gala.
The Michael
Wilson Scholarship
was created by
the AFA, in
partnership with
Brian Wilson, and
provides two (2)
scholarships in the
amount of
$15,000 each to
highly qualified
AFROTC cadets,
entering into their junior or
senior year. This scholarship
was established through Brian
Wilson, a Major League
Pitcher. Wilson established this
scholarship to honor the
commitment to service and
legacy of his father, Michael
Wilson, an Air Force veteran.
The gift is the largest
scholarship given by an
individual to be administered
by the Air Force Association in
its 66-year history.
This year the Paul Revere
Chapter presented the
Michael Wilson Scholarship at
the AFA Holiday Gala to one
of the recipients, Cadet James
O’Connor.
Cadet O’Connor is a leader
and scholar in Air Force ROTC
Detachment 340 at Worcester
Polytechnic Institute. He
currently has a 3.60 GPA and
will graduate in 2014 with a
bachelors and masters in
Aerospace Engineering. He
has demonstrated excellence
in community service, fitness,
military studies, leadership at
the detachment and at field
training. It’s no surprise that
Cadet O’Connor was selected
for pilot training. Cadet
O’Connor wrote three essays
about leadership competing
against cadets from 387
colleges and universities in the
Northeast Region. The Paul
Revere Chapter is proud of
Cadet O’Connor and wishes
him the best of luck in his
studies.

The Paul Revere chapter held
its 4th Annual AFA Veterans
Fun Run 5K/10K road race,
hosted by the Bedford
VAMC, on Saturday 9 Nov
2013. The purpose of this
event is for the chapter to
raise funds to support deployed troops, their families
and for Veterans programs
run by the chapter. The event
is a great way to promote
AFA and also increase
awareness of VA benefits for
Veterans. With Miss Emily
Shay heading up the planning, it is no surprise that this

Everyone loves this part,
especially the swanky
corvettes that show up
parked in neat rows in the
grassy lawn as music plays
and food is served. This year
the event had a record
number of corvettes, topping

Jokers are WILD….
Our thanks to a great Holiday Gala Committee
led by Jenny Hopewell with outstanding support from
Heidi Aronofsky, Marlene Jarvis, Edie Singleton,
Michelle Stewart and Irene Biddy.
Jokers are wild and so was
the fabulous AFA Holiday
Gala held at the Doubletree
in Bedford. Despite the sleet
that came down at the end of
the evening, everyone had a
great time! The event kicked
off with some mingling;
“HAVE YOU LIKED
making new friends and
running into old ones. Mr. Paul
Zauner, the president of the
Paul Revere Chapter,
highlighted some pretty
amazing achievements and the
chapter showed off some
serious bling scooped up at
the AFA National Convention
in Washington D.C. earlier this
fall. Amidst the glowing
holiday lights, the Doubletree
really put on a delicious
meal. And as expected, folks
were dressed to the nine for
the occasion, but that didn’t
stop them from sprinting
across the floor in a random
card game developed by the
DJ! Some were even bumped
out of their seat when an

dove for the last one
remaining, rear first. But it all
came down to the Joker in the
end and the Killeen’s went
home with “Dinner for Two.”
The smiles and laughter took
over the gala...and so did the
dancing not long after!
Warm Coats to Vets!
AFA’s Paul Revere chapter
got an earlier start than most
wrapping up Christmas gifts
Monday, December 16, not
long before the annual Veterans Christmas Party in Lowell. Some of this year’s funds
went to support veterans in
the chapter area. AFA
teamed up with Hanscom
volunteers to bring a hot
meal and warm coats to
more than 50 of our veter-
ans. We were even delighted
to have a special visit from
Santa, Mrs. Claus and the
Service Dog, Max!
