Scales Mound School Newsletter Time is Running Out. We Need Your Opinion! M arc h 2 0 16 This year Scales Mound Community Unit School District 211 is participating in a statewide survey of the school’s climate and learning conditions. The survey provides parents of students in our learning community a voice in our school improvement efforts. But time is running out to provide us with your feedback. The window for participating in the 5Essentials survey will close March 11, 2016, and we need to hear from you. Your participation is a critical part of this process. As parents you hear and see things that we may miss. You have a perspective of our strengths and weaknesses that is unique to your child’s and your experience in our school district and we want to hear about those experiences. The 5Essentials survey is the vehicle for you to provide us with your voice into what we do here at Scales Mound Community Unit School District 211. The survey provides a comprehensive picture of our school’s organizational culture in an individualized report measuring critical components of a successful school: • Effective Leadership • Collaborative Teachers • Involved Families • Supportive Environment • Ambitious Instruction So far, the overall parent response rate is 16% for the 2016 Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey. As a reminder, schools need 20.0% of their parents to respond in order to receive a report. Here are the parent response rates for schools in Scales Mound CUSD 211: • Scales Mound Elem School: 16% • Scales Mound Jr. High School: 16% • Scales Mound High School: 16% So this is where our parents become an important part of the process. All it takes is 20-‐ minutes to help us learn more about what we are doing here in Scales Mound. In order for us to see the results of the parent survey, we must have at least a 20% participation rate, and we are almost there. So go to https://survey.5-‐essentials.org/illinois to take the survey today. We strongly encourage you to participate in this survey and provide us your voice as we continue to improve our schools and make Scales Mound Community Unit School District 211 truly tops in the state. Thank you in advance for your participation. Dr. Bill Caron Superintendent Developing an understanding of culture through Social Studies and Art To develop an understanding of other cultures is an objective of the 8th grade Social Studies curriculum. The students spend the year studying the geography, history, and culture of the Eastern Hemisphere. A Common Core writing standard implemented in the Social Studies curriculum is to “use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others”. The International Intercultural Mural Exchange / Japan Art Mile project allows the students to collaborate with a partner school through designing and painting a mural. Students correspond with the partner peers through a secure online forum site to learn about each other’s country and share what it is like to be a teenager in another culture. The 8th grade students created a “Hello” video of their interpretation of cultural aspects of our community. You can watch the video on my classroom web page. We also exchanged student created cards and snacks selected by the students. We received a package from our partner class containing cards, candy and snack foods. This is the fourth year the Scales Mound 8th grade has participating in the program. Our partner class this year is from Kizu-‐Minami Junior High School in Kizugawa-‐city, Kyoto, Japan. We received the half painted mural from Japan at the beginning of January. The 8th grade students worked during class designing and painting our half of the mural. The completed mural was displayed in the school until mid February. Then it was sent back to Kizu-‐Minami Junior High to display in their school before returning it to the Japan Art Mile program. The mural will then be displayed in a children’s art exhibit in Japan. You can see the culture video, mural, mural explanation and pictures of students painting on my website: http://mrskellyhistory.wordpress.com/student-‐projects/ Second Semester Guidance Kick Off! On Friday, February 5th Mrs. Deppe kicked off the second semester guidance lessons with a pajama and movie party with students in grades Kindergarten thru 5th grade. Students and faculty watched Disney Pixar movie Inside Out. Inside Out is an animated movie that shows the various functions that govern our response to various situations. The functions responsible for happiness, sadness, fear, anger and disgust are characterized and the details of the activities they do to run the life of a young girl, Riley, from her birth to current date. Riley’s emotions help advise her through everyday life. Based on the movie, guidance lessons will be taught for the remainder of the year by Mr. Lawson, Mrs. Deppe’s student counselor teacher. our parent Response rate is at 16% We need to hear from you! Please go to: https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/survey/parent/login/ to complete your survey before March 11, 2016 Please call the Scales Mound School Office at 815-845-2215 to schedule your conference. For The Kids, Lauren W inter Dance Marathon Committee Iowa State University National Honor Society rd The Scales Mound WYSE team placed 3 out of 9 teams in Division 300 at Highland Community College February 4th. They now advance to the Sectionals at NIU on March 3. Individual winners were: 3rd Place Computer Science – Cole Anderson, 3rd Place Engineering Graphics – Ryan Schiess, 3rd Place Math, Zachery Stadel, 1st Place Math, Jalen Phillips. Other members of the team are Allysa Anderson, Hunter Hall, Kyle Wienen, Sonja Townsend, Erin Winter, Jacob Winslow, Lauren Sigafus, Madelyn Cocagne, Isaac Stadel, and Nic Davis. The team is coached by Mr. Keith Hesselbacher. The Kindergarten class celebrated the 100th day of school. Many of the kindergarteners dressed like they were 100 years old. We made 100 year old portraits and made our bucket lists to accomplish before we turn 100. We made a 100 day trail mix where everyone contributed 100 pieces to the mix. We counted 100 fruit loops by putting them in groups of 10 to make a 100 day necklace. We also enjoyed listening to the stories, How to Babysit a Grandpa and How to Babysit a Grandma. Mrs. Deppe is pleased to announce that the National Honor Society will be inducting six new members during a ceremony on Monday, February 29th at 6:30 p.m. New members are Jalen Phillips, Jacob Winslow, Katie Pingel, Lauren Sigafus, Maddie Cocagne and Kristy Kruger. As a first requirement, all students had to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5. Next, students had to fill out an application and write an essay with regard to the four pillars of the National Honor Society; scholarship, service, leadership and character. New members will join current members, Kyle Wienen, Sonja Townsend, Allysa Anderson, Erin Winter, Zac Stadel and Kelsey Wienen for a reception following the induction. Benjamin Vandigo (JH Band) Benjamin was chosen as the musician of the month for March because he has grown a lot as a musician this year! He has worked hard to improve his musical skills! He frequently takes his saxophone home to practice and he is actively involved in all of our band events, including parades, lessons, contests, concerts, and pep band performances! He is dedicated, respectful, and responsible! It is a pleasure to have you in band, Benjamin. You’ve worked hard this year! I can’t wait to see you continue to grow as a young musician! Keep up the good work! Keaton Pickel (JH Choir) Keaton was chosen as the musician of the month because he is always a lot of fun in choir. He likes to sing his heart out and have a good time! He is always smiling, and he likes to make others smile, too. Keaton has always been proud to be a singer, and he is never afraid to share his love of music with others. He especially likes to sing songs from the musical “Oklahoma!” Keep sharing your love of music with others, Keaton! It is a special gift! Isaac Stadel (HS Band) Isaac is actively involved in all of our school music events including contests, concerts, pep band, and parades. He is also involved in the school plays and musicals every year. He is very dedicated to the school music department, and it is easy to see that he has a love for making music. Isaac is very musically talented in many ways. He plays the alto saxophone in band and he sings baritone in choir. He was also a handsome prince in our school musical, “One Enchanted Evening.” Isaac is always willing to learn and try new things and to grow as a musician. Keep sharing your gift of music with others, Isaac! Seth Hammer (HS Art) Seth was selected as the March artist of the month. It’s no secret that Seth REALLY did NOT want to take art, but it ended up being the better of his only two options. However, Seth has shown a great deal of determination and continues to make great strides in his skill and craftsmanship. He’s learning to take pride in his work and is commendably invested in and proud of the work he is completing. Super work, Seth! Ari Nottrott (JH Art) Ari has been selected as the March artist of the month. It is evident that Ari takes pride in her work. She works in a careful and meticulous way. Her final products are always well thought out, exemplify high quality work, and her ideas are original and creative. Ari even makes time to create art at home. It is an extreme pleasure to have Ari in class and I love forward to each new work of art. Keep it up, Ari! ! SCALES!MOUND!SCHOOL! MARCH!2016!BREAKFAST! Monday!
