HYMNS AFTER THE LITTLE (GOSPEL) ENTRANCE
APOLYTIKION FOR GREAT AND HOLY PASCHA IN THE PLAGAL FIRST MODE
Christ is risen from the dead, by death hath He trampled down death, and on those in the graves hath He
bestowed life.
Χριστός ἀνέστη ἐκ νεκρῶν, θανάτῳ θάνατον πατήσας, καί τοῖς ἐν τοῖς μνήμασι ζωήν χαρισάμενος.
RESURRECTIONAL APOLYTIKION IN THE THIRD MODE
Let the Heavens rejoice; let earthly things be glad; for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm, He hath trampled
upon death by death. The first-born of the dead hath He become. From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us,
and hath granted great mercy to the world.
APOLYTIKION OF THE ANNUNCIATION FOURTH MODE
On this day when our salvation is crown’d for eternity, and the revelation of the mystery of the ages. With Divine
Grace the Son of God becomes the Virgin’s Son and Gabriel’s good tidings
proclaim the news, for this we rejoice in song unto the Theotokos. Hail to You who are fill’d with grace, the Lord is
with You!
SEASONAL KONTAKION IN THE PLAGAL FOURTH MODE
Though You went down into the tomb, You destroyed Hades' power, and You rose the victor, Christ God, saying to
the myrrh-bearing women, "Hail!" and granting peace to Your disciples, You who raise up the fallen.
EPISTLE READING
PRIEST: Let us attend.
READER: Sing praises to our God, sing praises. Clap your hands, all you nations.
PRIEST: Wisdom
READER: The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 9:32-42.
PRIEST: Let us attend.
READER: IN THOSE DAYS, as Peter went here and there among them all, he came down also to the saints that
lived at Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years and was paralyzed.
And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed." And immediately he rose. And all
the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord. Now there was at Joppa a disciple named
Tabitha, which means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity. In those days she fell sick and died;
and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing
that Peter was there, sent two men to him entreating him, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter rose and
went with them. And when he had come, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him
weeping, and showing tunics and other garments which Dorcas made while she was with them. But Peter put them
all outside and knelt down and prayed; then turning to the body he said, "Tabitha, rise." And she opened her eyes,
and when she saw Peter she sat up. And he gave her his hand and lifted her up. Then calling the saints and widows
he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.
SUNDAY OF THE PARALYTIC: THE READING IS FROM JOHN 5:1-15
2
After these things, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now in Jerusalem, by the sheep
3
gate, there is a pool with five porches called in Hebrew “Bethesda.” Under these lay a great multitude of people
4
who were sick, blind, lame, or paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at certain
times into the pool, and stirred up the water. Then whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was
5
made whole of whatever disease he had. A certain man was there, who had his illness for thirty-eight years.
6
When Jesus saw him lying there and perceived that the man had been sick for a long time, he asked him, “Do you
7
want to be made well?” The sick man replied, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred
8
up, but while I am coming, someone else steps down before me!” Jesus said to him, “Arise, take up your mat, and
9
walk!” Immediately, the man was made well; he took up his mat and began to walk. Now it was the Sabbath on
10
that day. And so, the Jews said to the man who had been cured, “It is the Sabbath! It is not lawful for you to carry
11
the mat!” The man answered them, “He who made me well, that one said to me, ‘Take up your mat, and walk.’”
12
13
Then they asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your mat, and walk?’” But the man who had
14
been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn in the crowd that was there. Later, Jesus found
him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse may
15
happen to you!” The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

SATURDAY OF SOULS - JUNE 3, 2017
Divine Liturgy – Memorial Service will be at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Annunciation Greek Orthodox
Church 500 Belmont Park North Dayton, Ohio 45405 Parishioners wishing to have the names of their
departed love ones read during the Saturday of the Souls are asked to fill out a form and return it to Fr. Joseph or
the church office. Forms can be located in the community center or True Vine newsletter.
Dear Parish Faithful,
Summer is not a time off from one’s Sunday obligation to attend Divine Liturgy. It is absolutely
essential for spiritual growth to regularly attend church on Sunday. Don't come occasionally to
church. Don't just come when you feel like it. Make regular church attendance a priority and let it
be a good habit that becomes a part of who you are. Nothing does more for your spiritual health
than regularly being in church. Being in a church service is irreplaceable. It is a moment in time
and once it's gone, it's gone forever. There will always be competition for your time and other
things that you could do on a Sunday. The only legitimate excuse for missing church is illness or
work.
The Holy Trinity created us to worship Him. That’s the primary reason we exist. This is why the
Church was established and this is what God’s people will do when Jesus returns and restores our
fallen world. Revelation 22:3 gives a picture of this: “No longer will there be anything accursed,
but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship Him.” The
central aspect of our corporate worship is the reception of the Eucharist. To not come to God’s
temple, to not worship Him, and to not receive His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity is a spiritual
poverty and tragedy. When a professing Christian misses church they are missing God’s
prescribed process for spiritual growth through Holy Communion with Him. The only legitimate
excuse for missing Sunday Divine Liturgy is work or sicknesses. All other absences are sinful.
As your priest I in no way pass judgment on you. I only ask that you search the depth of your
hearts and do what is right. Our lives are so short, and they are gifted to us lovingly by our Lord.
What we do in this earthly temporal realm has a direct correlation to what we will experience in
the eternal spiritual realm. Jesus wants us here on Sunday mornings to serve and worship Him.
He loves us so much that He has given Himself to us through His Divine Liturgy. This practice of
the Orthodox Christian assembly dates from the beginnings of the apostolic age. St. Paul’s letter
to the Hebrews in verse 10:25 reminds the faithful "not to neglect to meet together, as is the
habit of some, but to encourage one another.” We cannot pray at home as at church, where there
is a great multitude of us, where exclamations are cried out to the Lord as from one great heart,
and where there is something more: the union of minds, the accord of souls, the bond of charity,
and the prayers of all united and offered up to our Most High God through His priest.
With Love in Christ,
Father Joseph
