Why do I need to see a member of the
Liaison Psychiatry Team?
Staff think you may benefit from a wider assessment of
your psychological, physical and social needs. Seeing
a member of our team may help you talk about your
feelings and what is going on in your life.
Who is the Liaison Psychiatry Team?
We are a team of specialised nurses and doctors,
including a neuropsychologist. We see patients in the
hospitals who may have alcohol-related problems,
psychological and other mental health issues as well as
a physical condition.
We see patients in Accident and Emergency
departments, inpatient wards and sometimes clinics.
We are a friendly team who will not judge you. You
have a right to be treated with respect and dignity
whatever the reason for you coming to hospital.
We see lots of different types of people. Psychological
and mental health issues are very common. They can
also happen because of a physical illness.
We see people with a variety of difficulties such
as depression, anxiety, bereavement, relationship
problems, alcohol problems and self harm.

What if I don’t want to see the team?
If you decide to see us, we hope this will help you
make sense of your situation and help other staff
understand your concerns better.
If you decide not to see us, you will still receive all
medical care as normal.
Staff will only ask us to see you against your wishes if
you are not able to think clearly at that time or they
consider you or someone else may be at risk.
What will the Liaison Psychiatry Team do?
We offer you a detailed assessment of your emotional,
psychological and social needs. We will always see you
in a private area and you may bring a relative or carer
with you if you wish.
We want to spend time listening to your concerns and
ask you about your emotional and physical health,
family, home circumstances and your life. We will give
you time to talk with a mental health practitioner You
do not have to talk about anything you do not want
to.

We will decide with you what further assistance and
support you may need. This may include referring
you to another service in the community. On rare
occasions, such as there is a major concern about
your safety, we may discuss the option of you being
admitted to hospital.
The agreed outcome is called your care plan. We
will let the hospital and your GP know what this
plan is. We may also speak to other people, such as
your family, where appropriate and only with your
permission and we will ask for your consent if we
receive a request to share information.
What can I do if I want to know more?
You can ask your nurse or doctor on the ward how
they think we may help you. Also, please ask us.
You can also get information from Health Rights
Information Scotland website www.hris.org.uk.
