LINCOLN‟S PLAN Put the country back together again “let „em up easy” 1. pardon the Confederates - amnesty 2. bring Southern states back FAST into Union LINCOLN‟S PLAN When 10% of state‟s pop. took a loyalty oath*State could rejoin the Union, elect officials & send representatives to Congress *Some African-Americans given right to vote II. CONGRESS‟ PLAN Congress controlled by Radical Republicans They wanted to punish the South with much harsher conditions Thaddeus Stevens Charles Sumner CONGRESS‟ PLAN Lincoln vetoed Congress‟ plan- he was assassinated a month later RECONSTRUCTION What will the new PresidentAndrew Johnson do? RECONSTRUCTION & JOHNSON Johnson wanted to let ALL the Southern states rejoin the Union right away It made Congress very angry Republicans in Congress had been running the show by themselves for 4 years • • Didn‟t want Southern Democratic Senators back because they liked having all the power •Hatched a plan to get rid of President Johnson IV. JOHNSON‟S IMPEACHMENT Congress made it illegal for Johnson to fire people Johnson wanted to fire Sec. of War Edwin Stanton He supported the Radical Republicans Johnson‟s Impeachment Johnson fired him anyway & House of Reps voted to impeach him • •Impeach means to accuse of wrongdoing •Saved from being kicked out by one vote •Congress passed their plan for the South despite his veto V. RECONSTRUCTION ACTS OF 1867 RADICAL REPUBLICANS‟ PLAN Divided the South into 5 military districts Rules Southern states had to follow to come back into the Union RECONSTRUCTION ACTS OF 1867 *NO state could rejoin until they made a new state constitution- MUST include AfricanAmerican citizenship RECONSTRUCTION ACTS OF 1867 51% take loyalty oath before state could rejoin Union State officials had to take ironclad oath *had never helped the Confederacy or taken up arms against the Union – eliminated a lot of people
