Together, they hold 20 percent of the world’s fresh water. “Fresh water” means that the lakes don’t have salt water like oceans do. The lakes are part of the St. Lawrence Seaway shipping route, which means people in Midwestern cities like Chicago can easily send things via boat all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Lake Superior This is the largest of the Great Lakes. In fact, it’s the largest freshwater lake in the world by area, and the third deepest. It can also be the most dangerous. Even though it’s a lake, storms can make waves up to 30 feet high. One of the most famous shipwrecks in history happened on this lake in 1975, when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a storm. of fish. Lake Ontario is the smallest and connected to Lake Erie by the Niagara River. Because these lakes are small, they have been adversely affected by pollution and overfishing. Lakes Huron and Michigan Lake Huron is the second largest of the Great Lakes, and Lake Michigan is the third. Lake Michigan also is the only Great Lake the United States doesn’t share with Canada. Some people think of these two lakes as one giant one because they are connected. Cleanup efforts Many groups have worked for years to clean up the lakes and protect them from threats such as pollution and invasive species like the Asian carp, a giant fish that eats the food other fish need to survive. The Great Lakes supply drinking water to millions of people, and the lakes are the favorite spots of many tourists. Keeping them clean and full of beneficial plants and animals will help them help people for years to come. Lakes Erie and Ontario Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes, only 62 feet deep.
