Year 5/6 Newsletter - Hallgate Primary School

Year 5/6 Newsletter – 30/09/16
The focus of this week’s English has been the presentation of dialogue. Learning about the
next stage of Odysseus’ journey, the children used a drama session to explore a discussion
between two characters. This was recorded the following day, using the necessary structure
and punctuation. On Thursday and Friday, the children produced a retelling of the attack at
the city of the Cicones, incorporating their planned conversation. Next week, the children
will be introduced the Polyphemus the Cyclops, learning how to create and describe an
authentic setting for the creature.
Moving on from last week’s work on place value, the children have developed their
understanding of addition strategies this week, both written and mental. Thursday and
Friday have seen us wrestling with protractors as the children have learnt how to use them
accurately to measure and draw a range of angles.
Our Science work continued to investigate the stolen laptop, with the children proving that
light travels in straight lines. Working in their groups again, the children co-operated well to
convert suspects’ height from feet and inches into centimetres. Using this information, the
children were able to eliminate one of the original six suspects from their inquiry. We were
encouraged by the conversations the children had to decide on lines of investigation, and
their explanations of what their findings meant.
As you may already know, our Harvest Festival will be held on Friday 14 th October. The
children have started learning songs for the service this week, and have also produced some
wonderful clay fruit and vegetables. Different classes across the school have chosen a fruit
or vegetable to be made and painted for a display in church. Miss Mitchell’s class have made
some marvellous cabbages, Mr Sheppard’s made tiny pea pods, and Mr Atkinson (never one
to take an easy path) decided on pineapples. This should make a beautiful display, alongside
the sculptures made by the children in Key Stage 1. We hope you’ll be able to come and see.
Thank you for your continued support,
