ATAS codes for undergraduate taught masters and postgraduate taught programmes
The Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) was introduced on 1 November 2007 and
remains an essential part of the UK’s commitment to counter proliferation. The scheme is
specifically designed to ensure that those applying for postgraduate study in certain sensitive
subjects – i.e. those defined as pertaining to the JACS codes below - do not acquire knowledge
that could potentially be used in WMD programmes.
Please note that since the JACS code is the sole determining factor for
whether or not a programme attracts ATAS it is crucial that this is
accurately defined for undergraduate taught masters and all
postgraduate provision: programme specifications are not however
required for postgraduate research programmes.
