March 2007 Volume 4, Issue 7 The Beacon of St. Alban’s “Illuminating the Word of God in the World” I Think You Should Call It Jesus’ and God’s Newspaper… By Kevin Gish That was several months ago when I had begun to think about changing the look of St. Alban’s monthly newsletter. You see, whenever I have a good idea, I always run it by my family to make sure it really is a good idea. My wife thought it was a great idea, of course, she could have just been trying to be supportive, so to really find out, I had to go to the “truth” teller, our daughter. I asked her what she thought of Daddy’s “great” idea, taking great pains to explain the intricacies of changing the newsletter to a smaller format, adding color, developing new techniques and creating a more professional look at a level that a 6 year old girl would understand. After all that she was silent for about five entire seconds and said, “I think you should call if Jesus’ and God’s newspaper.” It had never occurred to me up to that point that I should also change the title of the newsletter, but then that’s a kid for you...ask them any question and they give you any answer. Now it may not always be the answer you were looking for, but often it’s the answer you need. Where have you heard that before? There are variations on that theme all around us. Parents have said it, teachers have taught and the Rolling Stones even wrote a song about it. And of course, preachers preach about it. Often we are reminded that in your search for an answer, that God gives us what we need. Sometimes it is the answer we were looking for, and other times, it is the answer we didn’t, or perhaps couldn’t, see for ourselves. In giving us what we need, we are given the opportunity to step back and look at the larger picture. The answer will often lead us to look beyond ourselves and to how it may apply for a greater good. Not only sometimes can it be hard to see, but also hard to do. But we will have help with that as well. For in providing an answer, He provides also the gifts to act. Inside… In this time of Lent we spend a lot of time looking for something to “give up” for the season. We’ll give up chocolate, or sodas or St. Alban’s Women’s Guild caffeine or some other thing that is bad for us. Maybe the answer is to News ............................2 give up something for someone else. Give up more time to spend with Easter Commemoration Form.............................3 your family, or your give up your talent to your local school. Give of Sunday School yourself to your neighbor down the street who may need assistance. Youth Group ....................4 Most importantly give of yourself to reconfirm your faith and your Music ...............................4 News & Happenings ........5 commitment to God and His mission, and keep it going beyond Lent. I had only seen a part of it. If I wanted to revamp the newsletter, not only did I have to change the look, but also the name. Changing the small parts, or what’s inside the pages was fine. But I needed to step back and look at the bigger picture, the whole picture. I didn’t get the answer I was looking for, but I got what I needed. News From St. Alban’s Women’s Guild The Women’s Guild elected it’s new officers for 2007 & 2008. They are: President: Melinda McDaniel Vice President: Betty Smith Secretary: Mary Moran Treasurer: Barbara Phillips The Guild invites ALL women to join them this year and give us a try. The guild meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month except July and August. The meetings are held in the Vestry room and begin at 7:30 p.m. except for special occasions as noted. The profits from this sale will be used for youth retreats and for outreach. As we begin the Lenten season, the children in Sunday School will be receiving a Lenten calendar, and several books relating to the Lenten season. The younger children will receive coloring/story books on Lent, Jesus' last days and Easter while the older children receive a book on Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Please explore this material with your children. We are planning a sleepover/lock-in for a Saturday in March. Plans are for the children to come to church at 6, have some dinner, watch a movie, play games, do an evening chapel service, and go to sleep. We will be serving them breakfast and they will be preparing a surprise for coffee hour. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please see either Sandy or Dottie. The Sunday School will also be doing a skit for the Lenten season. Look for further details in the bulletin. We hope all of our St. Alban's families take time from their busy schedules to reflect on this very special season in our Church calendar. Yours in Christ, Dottie Moore The Youth Group has had a busy month. We went to Shadowland Lasertag in Columbia at the beginning of the month. We learned to work as a team, over come our fear of the unknown and had loads of fun. Soon after that we hosted the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. The kids worked hard setting up, serving and cleaning up. Thank you to everyone who came for dinner, we hope everyone enjoyed the food and fellowship. We have regular meetings on the last Sunday of each month in the game room at 10:30am. Kids in grades 5-12 are welcome. Our next event will be a pizza/game night at the church in March. For more information contact Sandy Murphy at 410-255-7489 Music News The music program has ordered a new supplement to the hymn book called Wonder, Love and Praise. When they arrive we will be putting them in the pews. At the moment, we have been photocopying the music when we sing from that book. The Voice Choir desperately needs more voices for our choir. We currently have just 7 regular members. During times when the choir performs and you see many people up there singing, it is because we have been able to pull in extra folks, usually at the last minute. We really need more choir members there regularly to help lead the congregation in the new music we are singing. The Beacon of St. Alban’s 4 The Beacon wants to shine a light on YOUR good news. Summer Camp 2007 at Claggett: The Bishop Claggett Center will be offering 9 different weeks of summer camp beginning with “High School Week” and “Boys Fishing Adventure Week” on June 24.
