“It’s all about the film”. Urban Suburban Film Festival
welcomes you back and thanks for your support.
Change is evitable. How appropriate that 2009 symbolized
significant historical change. Within every moment in time,
change will occur regardless of location. It was our goal to
change the landscape in which film festivals are viewed in
the City of Philadelphia. Our primary goal was to focus on
the artist and secondarily create a third major option within
the existing film festival arena. I think we accomplished
both of these lofty goals with the help of every filmmaker
and producer who graciously submitted their work to our
inaugural film festival. I cannot say enough to thank the
100 plus filmmakers that submitted their work to be
displayed at the Urban Suburban Film Festival. I love the
City of Philadelphia
From the onset, it was our mission, despite the economy to
focus our event, your festival and the artist. So as we’ve said all
along “it’s all about the film”. While our primary focus has been about ensuring that filmmakers
regardless of race, creed, color, gender or sexual preference have a venue to display their work
collectively not separately, it would not have been possible without the support of willing sponsors. We
have been rewarded by our willingness to focus on “City Avenue” and the businesses that line this
historically rich residential neighborhoods along City Avenue.
Our wonderful existing partners such as Saks 5th Avenue, Citibank, Franklin Institute, Sande Webster
Gallery, MindTV, , Hilton Hotel, AUDIOFILMS Recording and Employee Benefits Consulting Services
Incorporated. We welcome our new partners Ciroc and MoMac Lifestyles Media
It goes without saying that without a talented team nothing can be done successfully. I want to
personally thank each team members for their time effort and energy because without them we could not
have made this event a success. While the festival is all about the film, the festival is about the diversity of
the city, the suburbs and common thread that we all share regardless of our of country of organ, it is
about accepting and tolerating each person creative uniqueness and allowing it to be expressed. So I’ll
see you on the “Avenue”.
Sincerely,
George Clifford Blackmon, Co- Founder, Chief Marketing Executive & Strategic Partnership

Welcome to the 2010 Urban Suburban Film Festival
Good evening, and welcome to the 2nd annual Urban Suburban Film
Festival. We want to thank everyone for attending last year event and
showing their support to the various artists who have a passion for
filmmaking. As mentioned, Philadelphia is the 5th largest media market in
the country, and while it has numerous film festivals, it doesn’t have any
specific to the minority community. Part of the mission for our festival is
not only to make it “all about the film”, but to also provide an opportunity
for entrepreneurs and businesses associated with the event, to
collaborate with talented individuals and increase their awareness in the
community.
We not only wanted to answer question of “why another film festival”?
We were committed to providing access to information for aspiring filmmakers, by way of
marketing, financing, distribution, and more. Last year’s event proved to a success and I look
forward to seeing each and everyone of you at this incredible event. We were also committed to
providing opportunities to meet leaders in the film industry, via actors, actresses, casting
directors, and more.
Throughout the process we were grateful to get some many good film submissions, which
highlighted the diversity of our event. So as we kick off the 2010 festival with some
extraordinary films, and rewarding workshops, please enjoy yourselves, and once again, thank
you for coming out.
On behalf of the Urban Suburban Film Festival, we would like to thank you for your continued
support, participation, and submission of your film. It was our honor to continue to showcase
your work, and give true recognition to all gifted and talented artist. As we move forward to
future events, we welcome the opportunity to collaborate with you over the next few years as
we continue to grow. We wish you continued success in your future endeavors and thank you
for your support.
Sincerely,
Andrew Harmon, Co- Founder, Creative Director

Urban Suburban Film Festival - Film Producing 101
Featuring Garrett Thompson
Garrett Thompson will discuss taking an idea from the creative mind to the silver screen. This session will focus on
"the journey" of producing a film, discussing the process and necessary steps to making a vision a reality.
Raised in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Director/Producer Garrett T. Thompson received a Bachelor’s Degree in
Broadcast Communication from Susquehanna University in 2000. After graduating, Thompson set his sights on the
west coast attending film school at the University of Southern California Cinematic Arts Production Program. While in
the program he directed a twenty-minute 35 mm short film entitled Hope’s Choice, starring Jocko Sims (Dreamgirls,
CRASH “the series”). The film garnished several awards including a student EMMY from the Academy of Television
Arts & Sciences, honorable mention from the Director’s Guild of America, and a Melvin Van Peebles award from the
San Francisco Black Film Festival. Hope’s Choice was also included in the Kodak Emerging Filmmakers Showcase
at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival and aired for over a year as a part of the Black Filmmakers’ Showcase on the
Showtime network.
Thompson was a recipient of the 2002-2003 Film Independent Project: Involve fellowship, where he was mentored by
writer/director Reggie Rock Bythewood (Notorious, Biker Boyz). In 2005, Thompson received his MFA in Film
Production and was awarded a full fellowship to the USC Cinematic Arts Critical Studies Ph.D. program. He is
currently working on his dissertation, which focuses on Hip Hop studies, under the tutelage of Dr. Todd Boyd (author
of “Am I Black Enough for You”, co-writer/producer of The Wood).
Thompson continues to straddle production and critical studies directing a pilot television show entitled Around the
World with Kelly, hosted by Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child and in the summer of 2006, joined forces with fellow
USC cinema student Jarrett Lee Conaway, creating a production company called BFAM STUDIOS. BFAM produced
Anthem, a sci-fi fable about two explorers who discover a time-capsule buried during a nuclear war. The Thompson
produced short propelled Conaway to nation-wide exposure when he was chosen by Steven Spielberg, from a pool of
12,000 filmmakers, to participate in the FOX reality competition On the Lot.
In 2010 BFAM would deliver its latest film TURBO (an FX heavy futuristic short film) starring Justin Chon (Twilight,
Crossing Over), Jocko Sims (Crash "the series", Dreamgirls) and internet superstar David Lehre (Myspace: the
Movie, Epic Movie). TURBO would win a student EMMY from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (for Youth
Programming), a first place Gold Circle Award for Outstanding Student Film from the Caucus Foundation, Official
Selection at the Comic-Can Film Festival, and Best Student Film at the Hollyshorts Film Fest. Thompson and
Conaway are currently trying to sell TURBO and are developing an independent feature film.

Hailing from the rough streets of South Philadelphia, Rick Watson found trouble at an
early age that landed him behind bars.
Not letting that experience define him, Rick Watson has since returned to his South
Philly neighborhood to start his successful endeavor, “World Renowned
Entertainment.”
Rick Watson graduated from South Philadelphia High School and quickly joined the
R&B/rap group, RPM. It was then that Rick Watson fell in with the wrong crowd,
which directly lead to his seven-plus years of incarceration.
Rick Watson didn’t allow himself to become the stereotypical inmate. While in
prison, Rick Watson graduated from the prison’s Pennsylvania Business Institutesponsored class. Rick Watson has also written numerous plays and scripts while
behind bars, never wasting an opportunity to improve on his writing skills.
Once released, Rick Watson parlayed his PBI-learned skills and previous
entertainment experience into the creation of World Renowned Entertainment, the

Urban Suburban Film Festival - Playwright Discussion
Featuring Kash Goins
(Writer / Director) Kash Goins is a Delaware resident who was born and raised in South Philly as the
youngest of five boys. He has always had a penchant for acting and producing plays, evident by the
improv skits and impromptu plays he would "produce" on the streets of Point Breeze and Moore with
family and friends as a grade school attendant. He didn't pursue his first formal acting experience until he
was a Junior at Lincoln University, and shortly after graduation he was fortunate to gain work as a
member of the Freedom Theatre Rep, where he was directed by mentor Walter Dallas in “Sparkle,” The
Musical,” “Lazarus,” “Unstoned,” and “The Bluest Eye.”
In 2008 Kash founded GoKash Productions and has mounted two original self-written plays, the 2009
NYC Downtown Urban Theatre Festival Best Play winner “VI Degrees” and the hilarious comedy “Man, I
Shoulda Put A Ring On It!”. Goins has just completed his adaptation of "VI Degrees" to a short film and
the product is sure to gain national exposure for the GoKash Productions movement.
Not one to take a break, early 2010 has been an active time for Kash, starting with the Director / Actor /
Co- Producer role in Aliya Tene's hilarious Tryna Get to Heaven on 15 Cents. In addition, he had his
debut in March at Wilmington Drama League in the role of Gabriel in August Wilson's "Fences". The
remainder of the Spring will include a re-visit to the Downtown Urban Theatre Festival with his just
completed sequel to VI Degrees titled "VII Deadly Sins", followed by the Philadelphia premiere of "Man, I
Shoulda Put A Ring On It!" and another honored directorial endeavor with Cheril Clarke and her critically
acclaimed stage play "Intimate Chaos". In the late summer, Kash will mount a stage adaptation of Author
April Walker's newly released novel "More than one Way to Skin a Dog". The stage play will be titled
"Catch a Dog, Skin a dog... How Men Cheat!"
There is so much more to come, and as is apparent in his well known battle cry "Let's Get It!", it doesn't
appear that that halting of this powerful entertainment movement is in the immediate future.”

killed in the current conflict in Iraq. Four years have
passed since his brother was killed when an IED was
detonated beneath his diesel tanker while on a convoy to
the active combat area of Fallujah. In this animation the
writer/animator stops to think about who his brother was,
how he identified him, as well as work through issues of
guilt for not thinking about him as often as he feels that
maybe he should. The piece reflects back on the days of
the funeral and tries to recall what those days were like
for him and his family.

Grown in Detroit/Teen Moms become
Urban Farmers
Directed by: Mascha Poppenk
Categories: Documentary
Running Time: 1 Hour
http://www.grownindetroitmovie.com
Just imagine... Teen moms becoming urban farmers.
Utopia? Not in Detroit. The home town of mass production is
turning green again. The disappearance of the auto industry
was mainly the cause of Detroit’s problems. In the last fifty
years, one of the wealthiest cities in America has
transformed into a villa ghetto, where liquor stores and fast
food restaurants, behind bullet-proof glass, are rampant.
Amidst all this misery, the city and its residents have
surprisingly emerged with their own solution. Nature has
taken over and the city is ‘greening’ from within. This new
landscape is creating opportunities and hope for the city and
its residents.

Alex Feinstein, a young New York journalist, is an African
American woman who writes about hip hop. When her editor
forces her to interview a retired black actor named Sam
Montgomery for an article on 'Blacks in Hollywood,' she
reluctantly travels to Los Angeles to meet the man who
became famous portraying a character called 'Nappy
Coonfoot.' During the two-day interview, Alex discovers the
man behind the stereotyped images and in the process is
forced to confront her notions about hip hop images and her
own professional image.
The American newspaper’s vital role as public watchdog is
in danger. Circulation and revenue have plunged as
readers and advertisers flee to the Internet, thousands of
journalists have been laid off or bought out, and
stockholders have forced top news organizations out of
business. Stop the Presses takes viewers inside
disheartened newsrooms to document the devastation
and into the community to learn what readers think of
journalism’s fate. Critics have called the film “an absorbing
account that should appeal to anyone concerned about
the future of democracy” and “surprisingly inspiring, as it
points to the inevitable reinvention of an industry in need
of new life.”
