MESSAGE
With its 1.3 billion population and a rich culinary history, India is among the biggest food markets globally.
The scale of its diversity and size gives India a robust platform to sustain a world class food industry, an
industry which not only caters to domestic demand but also creates an impact globally.
In a world where most, if not all, industries are ever evolving through technical innovations in their entire
value chain, Regulations also need to evolve to remain relevant. Along with Regulations, compliance is a tool
rather than hindrance for winning the game. The right regulation and compliance help boost both demand
and supply, benefiting the entire value chain. This is even more true for food business because of food’s direct
impact on health and nourishment of the society.
Food business operators in India have been struggling under the cobweb of multiple regulations implemented
by different Governmental agencies. The entire food value chain is looking at a great opportunity after the
Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the Regulations there-under, implemented during August, 2011.
This opens a new path where regulations and compliances with right reforms can help actualize the potential
of multi decade growth in the entire food value chain.
Founded in 1943 Oil Technologists Association of India (OTAI) is a premier, not for profit organization of
scientists, academicians, researchers, quality service providers and industrialists working in oil seeds, oils,
fats, oleochemicals, surfactants and allied products. FSSAI is the apex regulatory authority in the food sector
established to lay down science based standards to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human
consumption.
With the intend of creating a framework for ease of doing business, for the first time in India, OTAI and
FSSAI have come together on a common platform to discuss and identify the challenges and explore possible
way forwards for creating an effective, evolving set of Regulations in harmony with global best practices.
This is a unique opportunity for the whole spectrum of Food Business Operators and I welcome all of you to
this mega event.
