Kindergarten teachers have begun the
English Language Arts (ELA) pretest. All
students will be assessed on the
following: letter names, letter sounds,
high frequency words, reading record
including retelling and comprehension questions. The post
test will be given at the end of the year on the same
items. In addition to the ELA pretest, all students will also
be assessed on the following for the 1st grading
period: retelling familiar stories, demonstrating an
understanding of print concepts, participating in
collaborative conversation, counting forward, counting,
matching, and writing numerals, understanding the
concept of “one larger”, and comparing groups of objects.
Happy September, first grade parents! We
are learning new things every day. In
language arts, we are learning to use details
and illustrations to describe the characters,
setting and events in a story. We are also
learning to write narratives and are focusing on
mechanics of writing. In science, we have been learning
about using our senses, and we will learn about the
differences between living and nonliving things as well as
the basic needs of living things. In math, we are learning
how to model and write addition sentences. Next, we
will learn about subtraction and how to write
subtraction sentences.
2nd grade is off to a fantastic start! Our first module in language arts is focused on literature and
narrative writing. While reading with your child each night, focus on the key details such as the 5W’s ,
problem and solution. In math, we focus heavily on place value to make sure our students have a solid
understanding of numbers. We learn a lot of important concepts in these first few months! Science is
always exciting and currently we are learning all about the human body.
September is going to be an exciting
month for third graders! We will be
learning how characters’ feelings,
traits, and motivations contribute to
the sequence of events in stories. We
will also be learning how to put descriptive details in our
writing and how important it is to have a clear sequence
of events in our narrative writing pieces. In math, we will
be finishing up on addition and subtraction within one
thousand and move into representing and interpreting
data. Finally, in science, we will be learning how plants
are affected by heat, light, and gravity and how they
make their own food.
In ELA, students will read and explore
the writing techniques used to bring
stories to life. As students are reading,
they will analyze the texts for meaning
as well as to understand characters, the
importance of setting, and the significance of the progression of events. Following a narrative structure, students
will write the true stories of their lives and share them as a
way to build the classroom community. Students will read and
analyze tall tales, myths, and fractured myths paying close
attention to characters, setting, events, and also point of view.
In Math fourth graders will be exploring strategies to multiply
by one digit numbers. Students will learn how to use the distributive property and expanded form to multiply by a one digit number, and eventually they will use place value, partial
products and regrouping to multiply a two digit number by a
one digit number.
Finally in science, students will be studying Florida life cycles.
By the end of the unit students will be able to compare and
contrast the major life cycles of Florida’s plants and animals
and explain the difference between complete and incomplete
metamorphosis.
In science, we are continuing
our Life Science module. The
students will be learning
about the physical structure
and function of both plants
and animals. They will also
study about plant and animal
adaptations. In math, we will
soon begin chapter two, division of whole numbers.
The social studies topic of discussion is Enterprise
Village. Students will be learning about responsibilities and rights as well as free enterprise. Fifth graders are in the process of writing their first personal
narrative based on an experience from their past.
The reading focus has been on better understanding
story elements: characters, setting and plot.
Kindergarten classes are learning to
keep a steady beat by moving and playing rhythm instruments. First grade
classes will practice moving to different
tempos: slow (lento), medium (andante), fast
(allegro), and very fast (presto). Second grade classes
will be able to distinguish between beat and rhythm.
Third grade classes are learning about dynamics
(loudness and softness). Fourth and fifth grades are enjoying musical styles.
The winter concert will be held at Azalea Middle School
on Thursday, December 8th at 6:30pm. Kindergarten,
second grade, chorus, and second year band will be performing. Chorus and second year band will also perform
on Friday, December 9th for the City of South Pasadena.
This will be an outdoor concert. The spring concert will
be held at Azalea Middle School on Thursday, May 4,
2017 at 6:30pm. First grade, third grade, chorus, first
year band and second year band will be performing in the
spring concert.
The PE Department has been working with all grade levels on the FitnessGram Assessments. These
assessments include the Pacer test, Trunk Lift, Curl-up, Height and Weight measurements, and Pushups. We will be moving into our bowling unit as soon as we have completed the FitnessGram makeups.
