Oct-2013 JG 2 of 2 TYPICAL TRENCH 3 7 1. Before digging dial (811) for Kentucky Underground-Kentucky Law requires area to be marked at least 2 business days prior to digging. 2. All trenches must be a minimum depth of 48” for primary and 42” for secondary from the top of the conduit. 3. If trench depth cannot be achieved, contact Nolin’s Engineering Department. 4. If trench is to be a joint trench (shared with other utilities) the following separations must be maintained: A. Between gas and electric lines – 60” B. Between water and electric lines – 60” C. Between sewer and electric lines – 60” D. Between communications and electric lines – 12” 5. If trench is to be electric only, the ditch must be wide enough to accommodate the conduit. 6. If the trench is dug through rough, rocky terrain, the conduit must be bedded with a minimum of 4” of sand. 7. All conduits must be Schedule 40 Electrical PVC unless Schedule 80 PVC is specified. 8. When secondary service comes out of ground Schedule 80 PVC conduit must be used. 9. All primary conduits (7200V) must be at least 2” diameter with 36” radius long sweeping elbows. Please call Nolin’s Engineering Department prior to installation. 10. Secondary (120/240V) conduit for a 200 Amp service must be a minimum of 21/2” diameter, with 36” radius long sweeping elbows. Please call Nolin’s Engineering Department prior to installation. 11. Secondary (120/240V) conduit for a 400 Amp service must be a minimum of 3” diameter, with 36” radius long sweeping elbows. Please call Nolin’s Engineering Department prior to installation. 12. Only when using 3” conduit can there be more than 180° of bend (2- 90° bends or 1- 90° & 2- 45°) in any one run of conduit, primary or secondary, between devices. 13. All primary and secondary conduit installations must be approved by Nolin’s Engineering Department prior to covering conduit with dirt. 14. Polypropylene pull string must be installed in all conduits, primary and/or secondary. 15. Where transformers and primary or secondary junction boxes are to be installed, specifications must be obtained from Nolin’s Engineering Department. 16. After the trench is dug and conduit installed with pull string, call Nolin’s Engineering Department (270-765-6153) to have an inspection scheduled. 17. After the trench and the conduit are inspected, the trench may be back-filled. Rev. Oct-2013 JG 1 of 2 PHONE: (270) 765-6153 TOLL FREE: (888) 637-4247 METERBASE LOCATION OPTIONS Notes: 1. All meter (service entrance) locations must be spotted by Nolin’s Engineering Department prior to the start of construction. 2. All new or upgraded commercial, industrial, farm and residential services must be installed underground. 3. All residential meter bases must be equipped with a lever by-pass. The ampacity must be stamped on all bases and the Underwriters Lab seal attached. 4. Meters must remain accessible at all times. 5. Meters should not be located in areas which are inconvenient to enter or where privacy is desired. 6. New service entrance location shall be approved by Nolin’s Engineering Department prior to installation. 7.
