200‐300 The norm in the convenience store industry is for larger power‐
house chains to gain an instant foothold in new markets by ac‐
quiring established regional chains. Look for 7‐Eleven to follow this trend, focusing on growth by acquisition, even as it aggres‐
sively looks to fill in familiar markets through organic expansion. It will grow nationwide. 150 This small‐store fitness chain has grown aggressively to more than doubling its footprint last year alone. It now has more than 300 locations nationwide. Orangetheory remains strongest in its home state of Florida but has a presence in California, New Jersey and New York. It has also added significantly elsewhere, including Colorado, Texas and Washington, and in several states through‐
out the Midwest and Mid‐Atlantic. The chain recently added New Mexico to its list of states and hopes to open several more loca‐
tions in the Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas before the end of the year. Orangetheory prefers end caps in A and B shopping cen‐
ters anchored by retailers catering mainly to female patrons, such as Bed Bath & Beyond and Pier 1, as well as premium grocery stores and wellness chains like GNC. 100 The children’s apparel chain will match last year’s growth pace with 100 new stores in North America. Look for many of the stores – if not most – to use the side‐by‐side format the company has been favoring of late. The company credits side‐by‐side stores with boosting performance, particularly for the OshKosh brand. Long‐term, the company will remain aggressive, planning the opening of 270 Carter’s locations and 250 OshKosh stores during the next five years. Expect the retailer to look nationwide for op‐
portunities in enclosed malls and shopping centers.
50‐70 The luxury apparel and accessories chain looks to maximize profit by focusing on opening its namesake stores opposed to relying ex‐
clusively on independent, licensed operators. Its growth projections may, in fact, be a bit conservative as the company added 23 U.S. locations during the second quarter alone, ended Sept. 26. Beyond its core women’s business, Michael Kors is also embarking on an aggressive push of men’s standalone stores. It plans to open as many as 75 men’s locations worldwide this year, many of them likely in the U.S. Men’s business is a new venture for the company but it looks to eventually have 500 men’s stores globally.
60 Looking exclusively to grow throughout the South, RaceTrac and sister chain RaceWay can be expected to focus on Florida, Geor‐
gia, Louisiana and Texas. Look for aggressive growth in Florida, where it pledges to add about 10 stores annually in the southern part of the state alone. The firm recently moved its headquarters to a larger space in Georgia, perhaps signaling more aggressive growth in the future. If it does add to its portfolio of stores in fa‐
miliar states, look for neighboring states such as Alabama, Louisi‐
ana and South Carolina to get the most immediate attention.

50‐60 The footwear giant surpassed $3 billion in sales for the first time during the fiscal year ended Dec. 31. That impressive milestone is boosted further by expectations for this year, during which com‐
pany‐owned retail stores are anticipated to report mid‐ to high single‐digit comps increases. The company, which operates as both a wholesaler and retailer, added 68 company‐owned stores last year. While some of those openings, as well as new stores this year, will be in international markets, look for a good portion to be new, domestic locations. The company will likely balance its growth between outlet centers, regional malls and downtown, streetfront locations. Skechers already has a strong retail presence in all 50 states and will likely look nationwide for more opportunities.
50‐60 Though Pacific Dental Services will tend to focus first on familiar markets throughout the Southwest, it has added locations else‐
where and has identified several southern states for growth, in‐
cluding Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas. Minne‐
sota in the Midwest as well as Colorado, Nebraska, Oregon and Washington are also likely to get some attention from the com‐
pany. Pacific Dental remains committed to an aggressive annual growth pace of 50 new locations per year. It is flexible in terms of space, considering a variety of retail spaces, including freestand‐
ing pads as well as inline or end‐cap slots in traditional shopping centers, lifestyle centers and power centers. 50‐60 This year’s opening pace marks a decrease from last year’s ag‐
gressive 83 new stores but is no sign the retailer is in trouble. During the fourth quarter, ended Jan. 30, net sales rose 25 per‐
cent, while comps were up an impressive 11 percent. The retailer has steadily opened 80 to 90 stores annually during the past few years. This year’s slowdown points to a more prudent, yet still ag‐
gressive, approach. Look for Francesca’s to look for opportunities primarily in regional malls and outlet centers nationwide. Recent activity includes two openings each in Illinois, New York and Texas, and single new stores in California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Missouri and New Jersey. Colorado, Florida, Indiana, New York and Ohio will all soon get multiple openings.
50 Though the sporting goods chain has multiple formats, including the larger Sports & Co.’s 25,000 s.f. layout, it will likely focus on its smaller concepts that allow stores to open more quickly. The chain competes well with big‐box chains as it focuses primarily on small‐ to midsize markets. Hibbett has a long‐term goal of reach‐
ing 1,500 stores nationwide. Despite less‐than‐stellar sales of late, management believes the aggressive goal is well within reach. Look for Hibbett to eye opportunities throughout states in the South, Southeast, Mid‐Atlantic and Midwest. 40‐50 Look for Leslie’s – which has distinguished itself as the only truly national chain in the industry – to continue to target warm weather states like Arizona, California, Florida and Texas for much of its growth. That’s not to say it won’t look for opportunities elsewhere; it has a presence as far north as Illinois in the Midwest and Massachusetts in the Northeast. Leslie’s will also consider acquisitions of independent stores or smaller chains. Look for Leslie’s to consider freestanding pads and shopping center space. 40 Parent company TBC Corp. encourages potential franchisees to both look for a site where they can build a new store or acquire an existing, independent auto service provider. Each location needs a minimum of 4,000 s.f. to accommodate at least six service bays. Continued on Next Page

30 The health and nutrition retailer will slow down significantly after opening 50 locations in 2015. Comps for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 26 were down 0.3 percent, leaving the company with flat same‐store sales for the full fiscal year. However, its business continues to grow and comps will likely inch up this year. It’s a safe bet Vitamin Shoppe will remain a viable, long‐term tenant for some time to come. Vitamin Shoppe looks primarily for free‐
standing pads or inline or end‐cap slots in power centers.

In the next issue we will roundup smaller burger brands, regional chains and those planning 50 or fewer locations, such as Checkers/Rally’s, DQ, , Freddy’s, Whataburger, Culver’s and In‐N‐Out.
Company Name DQ Grill & Chill DQ Orange Julius Checkers/Rally’s Krystal MOOYAH Freddy’s Culver’s Preferred Square Footage 1,800 to 2,700 s.f. 1,000 to 1,800 s.f. Openings Notes
85‐90 Dairy Queen counts on its franchisees to satisfy its growth ambi‐
tions. The company looks to add locations nationwide but eyes sev‐
eral New England states, as well as the entire Southeast. Massachu‐
setts, for instance, is expected to get as many as 60 new locations within the next five years.
680 to 750 s.f. 50‐55 Look for the drive‐thru giant to steadily increase its growth pace. The company wants to add at least 75 stores annually starting in 2017, which would put it on pace to challenge the leaders in the burger segment. It will look nationwide for opportunities, particu‐
larly in or around major markets. The chain recently announced it will specifically target the Baltimore, Md., area, as well as Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, D.C.
1,200 to 2,000 s.f. 50 Krystal will stick to its southern roots for the time being, looking for opportunities throughout familiar markets in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Louisiana, where the com‐
pany only has six locations, should get attention during the next few years. The burger chain will also continue to consider sites in its home state of Georgia, where it has 116 locations, as well as Ten‐
nessee, where it has 100 stores.
1,700 to 2,500 s.f. 35‐50 Mooyah debuted in New York late last year and has another open‐
ing planned in the Empire State this year, marking a growth push along the entire East Coast. The chain debuted last year in Florida and Indiana, and will soon open its first store in Massachusetts. Even as it looks to be aggressive in new states, Mooyah works to solidify its presence in familiar markets, including California, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey and Texas. 2,800 to 3,600 s.f. 45 Freddy’s continues to add to its presence throughout familiar Southern markets, including aggressive growth in Texas and its home state of Kansas. However, the company also looks elsewhere, as evidenced by its focus on southeastern states like Florida, Geor‐
gia and North Carolina. Other states that have gotten recent open‐
ings include Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska and Tennessee.
4,000 to 4,200 s.f. 40 Wisconsin‐based Culver’s opened 31 locations in 2015 and looks to eclipse that opening pace this year with 40 new restaurants planned. The company will likely look throughout…

…southern states for opportunities. Last year Culver’s added nine locations in Florida and had statewide debuts in both Georgia and North Carolina. It is likely only a matter of time before the chain also debuts in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. Elsewhere, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois and Missouri will also get new locations sometime this year.
35 San Antonio, Texas‐based Whataburger looks to add to the more than 600 locations it already has in the Lone Star State. The com‐
pany will also examine other southern states for opportunities, par‐
ticularly Oklahoma, Louisiana and Florida. Additionally, Arizona, which currently has 25 stores, should also get some expansion attention from the chain. 30 This California stalwart has been aggressive internationally, opening stores last year in Cyprus, India and the Philippines. However, the company still looks to grow its domestic presence and watches every state for opportunities. Look for Johnny Rockets to be flexible with its format when necessary. For instance, an opening last December in the Coronado Center mall in Albuquerque, N.M., took just 600 s.f. On the other end of the scale, the company recently signed a lease for a two‐story, 3,100 s.f. location in downtown Albany, N.Y. 25‐30 Like some of its competitors, Wayback Burgers has been looking for international opportunities of late, including what promises to be an aggressive push into Canada. But growth in other countries will not come at the expense of domestic opportunities. In fact, look for the franchisor to likely increase its U.S. expansion pace. The chain has already announced 19 openings within the next few months, in‐
cluding debuts in Colorado, Illinois, Oklahoma and Wyoming. Cali‐
fornia, Florida and Texas will all get multiple openings this year. 20 Subsidiary Qdoba Mexican Eats will get more growth attention from Jack in the Box Inc. this year but the namesake burger chain will get at least 20 new U.S. locations. Qdoba is expected to add 50 loca‐
tions. During the first quarter ended Jan. 17, the burger chain posted a modest 1.4 percent comps increase. Company‐owned lo‐
cations reported a 0.5 percent gain, while franchisees enjoyed a slightly stronger boost of 1.8 percent. With that in mind, the com‐
pany will count on franchisees to carry the bulk of the load when it comes to growth. 15‐20 The California icon continues its steady and measured growth pace. It only has one imminent opening announced, adding another store to its heavy California footprint, this one in Oceanside. California is currently home to almost 230 In‐N‐Out locations. By comparison, Arizona has the second most with 29. Don’t look for In‐N‐Out to try to compete with other “better burger” chains like Five Guys when it comes to growth. Nor does it need to. A recent opening in Seaside, Calif., drew thousands of customers, which even prompted local police to step in and help with traffic flow. While California will continue to get more In‐N‐
Outs, other Southwest states, including Texas, should get attention going forward. The Northwest is also largely untapped, with only a single location in Oregon and none in Washington. The company recently announced a second opening for Oregon later this year, and it’s only a matter of time before the chain enters Washington as well.

Baskin Robbins 400
During the fiscal year ended Dec. 26, Baskin Robbins’ U.S. comps grew Traditional 1,800 to 2,200 s.f. an impressive 6.1 percent compared to sister brand Dunkin Donuts’ Combo Stores 2,000 to 3,000 s.f. more modest 1.4 percent gain. The company will continue to rely on (w/Dunkin Donuts) Dunkin Donuts for a significant majority of growth this year but Baskin Robbins looks set to slowly elbow its way into more cap ex from parent company Dunkin’ Brands. During 2015, Baskin Robbins added 19 net new stores, about double the growth pace it originally expected. The chain added locations in several states, including California, Kentucky and Louisiana. Expect it to beat last year’s opening pace as it has al‐
ready signed several aggressive franchise development agreements in California, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas. Going for‐
ward, look for the company to focus on markets in warmer climates and with high levels of tourism, such as Atlanta, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Diego. Baskin Robbins will open in mall food courts and down‐
town locations, as well as shopping centers and lifestyle centers.
Rita’s 1,000 to 1,500 s.f. 100
This chain has been aggressive in California and has six more openings planned soon for the state. It also continues to bolster its East Coast presence and plans multiple openings in its home state of Pennsylva‐
nia, as well as Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. Colorado and Minnesota will also get multiple openings this year. Look also for more of a West Coast push in general as it recently signed ag‐
gressive development agreements with franchisees in Washington State, Idaho and Hawaii.
Orange Leaf 1,200 to 2,200 s.f. 100
The frozen yogurt specialist focuses its growth east of the Mississippi, with its heaviest presence in Texas, where it has 58 locations with three more opening soon, and Massachusetts, where it has 28 stores and an‐
other five coming soon. It recently opened its first store in Washington state, and a push into Oregon and California seems like a foregone con‐
clusion. Look for the franchisor to continue its aggressive growth pace for the next few years.
Menchie’s 1,000 to 1,800 s.f. 50‐70
Menchie’s expects to reach its next major milestone with the opening of its 600th location sometime late this year, after opening its 500th store last July in Saratoga, N.Y. California, Florida and Texas will remain the states getting the preponderance of new locations; Arizona, Geor‐
gia and Michigan will also get multiple openings this year. The company looks for opportunities nationwide. Yogurtland 1,000 to 1,800 s.f. 50
Yogurtland has reached more than 300 stores nationwide and will con‐
tinue its aggressive growth pace. Though it has added international growth to its agenda, look for the chain to continue an aggressive do‐
mestic expansion, focusing most immediately on its home state of Cal‐
ifornia. Also look for the company to add more locations in fellow warm‐weather states Florida and Texas. TCBY 50
Like many of its competitors, TCBY has been aggressive internationally Inline 800 to 1,200 s.f. as of late but the chain continues to focus domestically for most of its Self‐service 1,200 to 1,800 s.f. new stores. The frozen yogurt chain will look for opportunities nation‐
wide but look for California and Texas to get special attention. Califor‐
nia, in particular, has been earmarked for multiple openings in short order. Other states, including Michigan and New Jersey, should get multiple openings this year as well. TCBY could even surpass its 50‐
store estimate for the year, potentially getting closer to last year’s growth total of 84 new stores. Look for TCBY to open co‐branded stores with sister chain Mrs. Field’s Famous Cookies. Red Mango 30‐50
Red Mango will grow aggressively nationwide but has identified Cali‐
Traditional 1,000 to 1,300 s.f. fornia, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Self‐service 1,500 to 2,000 s.f. Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia as preferred expansion areas. So far, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Texas have been its…

…strongest growth markets and will likely continue to be so, with multiple openings imminent in all states. In addition to traditional growth, Red Mango has embarked on a new venture opening several locations in Texas middle schools, offering healthy snacks to kids. Sub Zero Ice Cream has been growing cautiously but now reaches into Sub Zero Ice Cream 1,200 to 1,900 s.f. 20 most corners of the country. While its home state of Utah and other Rocky Mountain states will likely take much of its focus in the short term, look for Sub Zero to branch out, particularly throughout the South and West. Florida, California and Texas have all gotten several stores recently. Oregon and Washington also seem to be likely targets for future growth.
Carvel 800 to 1,200 s.f. 20 In an effort to reach customers beyond familiar territories in the Northeast and Florida, Carvel will lean on sister concepts Auntie Anne’s
and Cinnabon by introducing ice cream counters in existing stores. Organic brick‐and‐mortar growth for the namesake concept will con‐
tinue in familiar markets. Florida and New Jersey will get some atten‐
tion, as well as Connecticut, where it recently signed a multi‐unit fran‐
chise agreement. Carvel will also focus more on non‐traditional retail venues like airports and stadiums. Marble Slab Creamery 700 to 1,500 s.f. 15‐20 Look for parent company Global Franchise Group to possibly follow TCBY’s lead by pairing the Marble Slab concept with its cookie concept Great American Cookies. The company’s first dual‐concept store will open later this year in Memphis, Tenn. After a few years of slumping sales and slow growth, the Marble Slab concept has rebounded and looks like a good candidate for steady growth. Marble Slab has grown mostly in the South, Mid‐Atlantic and Northeast, and future expansion will likely be focused in those areas.
16 Handles 1,200 to 2,200 s.f. 10‐15 Almost exclusively in New York, where it has grown a strong presence. Look for the franchisor to continue looking elsewhere along the eastern seaboard. Recently opened and store in Florida and has added several New England states to its stable. CREAM 1,000 to 2,000 s.f. 5‐10 Has grown primarily in its home market in Northern California, where it recently opened one location each in Concord and San Francisco. It plans at least two more openings in Northern California this year. Look for it to also grow in Southern California. Though the regional chain also has locations in Nevada, it could take a big leap to the East Coast, particularly Florida, where at least two locations will open this year.
