Union County, NC Confederate Pensioners
Note: This file is incomplete, but I no longer have easy access to these records so I decided to publish
what I have so far. The microfilm containing these records are available at many libraries, and at the NC
Archives in Raleigh. Some are now available on the NC Archives website. The original papers are held at
the NC Archives.
Since this file is very large, I’ve had to upload it to my website in a PDF format. The names are not
indexed by my site search engine, so please search this document for the individual surnames you’re
looking for.
I apologize for any formatting errors that may have occurred when I converted my Word file to PDF. Oh
well, at least the info is there even if it isn’t pretty! I hope you will find these records useful! I have
found them fascinating to research, just wish I could’ve finished. So far, the following records have been
accumulated over 7 years, and in no particular order.

ABSTRACTS FOUND IN THE
CONFEDERATE PENSION FILES OF
CONFEDERATE PENSIONERS FROM
UNION COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
Transcribed by Julie Hampton Ganis
Part 1 - 1885 Pension Act
Part 2 - 1901 Pension Act
This is an incomplete listing which includes Pensioners (soldiers or their widows)
who lived in Union Co. before, during or after the Civil War. I’ve also included some pensioners who
were from Union Co., but who applied for pension from another county.
In 1867 North Carolina began granting pensions to Confederate veterans who were blinded or lost
an arm or leg during their service. In 1885 the State began granting pensions to all other disabled
indigent Confederate veterans or widows. The laws were amended in 1901 and on many
subsequent occasions, expanding the scope of the law to include more beneficiaries [including a
final revision that allowed former slaves to receive pensions]. 1
Originally, the law allowed widows who married on or before the year 1875 to draw pensions
provided they were not otherwise disbarred. A widow or soldier who owned $2,000 or more in

property could not draw a pension.2 In later years, however, all Confederate veterans and widows
became eligible for compensation, not just the indigent veterans and widows.3
Copies of pension applications can be found at the state archives in the state in which the pension
was applied for.4
The North Carolina State Archives has custody of applications for pensions applied for in N.C.
These records are arranged in two series: Applications for Pensions under the Act of 1885, and
Applications for Pensions under the Act of 1901.5

duty from 12 to 2 o'clock, a squad of prisoners made a rush upon the guard, seized their guns and in the scuffle killed two
and wounded some few others. This unprovoked and unexpected attack upon our guard immediately drew the fire of the
outer sentinels and two pieces of artillery upon the recusant prisoners. A few shots, however, which resulted in killing and
wounding about fifty, restored the usual quiet."

Pension Bureau: Act of 1901 Pension Applications
Company I, 53rd NC Infantry. Applied for pension July 24, 1917 from Rte. 1 Monroe at age 77.
Application stated that he enlisted in Co. I, 53rd NC State Troops and was wounded in war and now
suffered with dislocated hip and broken thigh. Pension was not approved. Numerous documents filed
with application showing reasons why he should not be approved for pension. Document written by R.
W. Lemmond, Clerk of Superior Court of Union Co., dated Aug. 28, 1917 and filed with application
indicate he was a deserter due to his activity with the “Red Strings” for a long time after the war. Another
document written on July 24, 1917 by R. W. Lemmond, stated that applicant “did not remain true to the
end of the war….. The applicant, while on detail duty, was cut off from the main army and sought refuge
with a family who was not in sympathy with the Confederacy. He was given shelter, and sometime later
he went west and found employment and many North Carolinians among whom he remained until after
the war was ended. He states that while there he did not want to and did not try to get back to his
company for the reason that he thought he would be captured in the effort to get back. Up to the time he
was separated from his Co. and sought refuge, his record seems to be clear. He was separated from his
company and went west something near 15 months or possibly a year and a half before the surrender. He
came home soon after the surrender. All the facts necessary to granting a pension exist in this case unless
he is considered a deserter and the facts in regard to that in the possession of the board are stated
above….”
