It has been nearly two months since the last newsletter, and a lot has happened within our chapter during that time. Our March meeting featured Nancy Elsbecker. She provided a lot of information including the upcoming ACH rules changes, an ACH processing overview, and frequently noted violations. Nancy even got our minds working by asking us how many body parts have 3 letters (hint: there are 10, can you name them?) and what happened to the missing money in the hotel scenario. On April 22nd and April 23rd, our chapter hosed a 2-day Audit Skills training with William Woodington of Woodington Training Solutions. William proved to be a valuable educator to everyone from new auditors to those with over 20 years of experience. Overall, the evaluations were very positive, and our chapter hosted another successful Spring Seminar. I just returned from the IIA Leadership Academy where I was able to share ideas with over 350 chapter leaders from the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. It truly was a privilege to represent our chapter and our district during the 3-day conference. Our chapter has a lot to be proud of, and we were recognized as a Chapter of Excellence for our support of the CIA Learning System and our donation to the IIA Research Foundation. I encourage any of our current leaders and future leaders to consider attending the Academy next year. Minnie, Seth, and Mickey at IIA Leadership Academy Our next meeting will be an audit director’s roundtable. Panelists will include the head audit personnel of First Premier, CorTrust, and MetaBank. The meeting will be held at the Meta Payment Systems building (5501 S Broadband Ln). Admission to the meeting will be free with a non-perishable food item which will be donated to Feeding South Dakota. Last year, we donated more than 40 items, so let’s try and top that this year! We will also be voting in our officers for the 2013-2014 chapter year. 2 (President’s Letter – continued from page 2) I am pleased to announce our chapter has accumulated enough points to achieve GOLD status! I can’t thank everyone enough for your strong commitment to the monthly meetings and helping build a strong chapter. Please mark your calendars for August 12th and 13th as the Central Iowa Chapter will be hosting the 2013 Midwest District Conference in Des Moines, IA. It has a state fair theme, and there is a discounted fair package available for the Sunday preceding the conference. Remember, our chapter has approved an expense reimbursement program for those wishing to pursue an IIA designation. Please refer to the September newsletter or contact Seth Peterson for more details. (Continued from page 1 – May 5, 1961) astronaut to travel into space. The suborbital flight, which lasted 15 minutes and reached a height of 116 miles into the atmosphere, was a major triumph for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). NASA was established in 1958 to keep U.S. space efforts abreast of recent Soviet achievements, such as the launching of the world's first artificial satellite--Sputnik 1--in 1957. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the two superpowers raced to become the first country to put a man in space and return him to Earth. On April 12, 1961, the Soviet space program won the race when cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was launched into space, put in orbit around the planet, and safely returned to Earth. One month later, Shepard's suborbital flight restored faith in the U.S. space program. NASA continued to trail the Soviets closely until the late 1960s and the successes of the Apollo lunar program. In July 1969, the Americans took a giant leap forward with Apollo 11, a three-stage spacecraft that took U.S. astronauts to the surface of the moon and returned them to Earth. On February 5, 1971, Alan Shepard, the first American in space, became the fifth astronaut to walk on the moon as part of the Apollo 14 lunar landing mission.
