GRADE 5 Name: What is a root word? The ‘root’ or the ‘stem’ is the word that can stand on its own and have a meaning. Do you know what? I dislike Baboon. He misled me. He makes me feel helpless. What is a prefix? A prefix is a set of letters that is added to the beginning of another word. They are not words in their own right and cannot stand on their own. A prefix changes the meaning of the root word. What is a suffix? This is the set of letters that is added to the end of the root word. A suffix usually changes the meaning of the word. The prefixes un-, dis-, non- and ex- mean ‘not’ or ‘the opposite of’. Add one of these prefixes to each of the root words below and then make a sentence with the new word on a separate piece of paper.
