Good News
The gospel is “good news.” The essence of the gospel is good news, which came from
heaven to earth as revealed to mankind by the living God through His Holy Word and Holy
Spirit. The good news lies in the historical facts that God has broken into time and space
and has acted graciously and redemptively toward His creation in the person of His Son –
the Lord Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:1-3). Jesus Christ came to save. “For the Son of Man is
come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).
An individual person needs salvation, and therefore a Savior, because he/she is a sinner.
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The problem is sin; the
solution is Jesus Christ. The disease is sin; the cure is Jesus Christ. The dilemma is sin;
the answer is Jesus Christ. The danger zone is sin; the safe harbor is Jesus Christ. “The
sting of death is sin” (1 Corinthians 15:56); the gift of eternal life is Jesus Christ. “The
wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans
6:23). Death and sin are in Adam; life and righteousness are in Jesus Christ (Romans 5:12
-17). Sin results in condemnation; Jesus Christ results in justification (Romans 5:18).
“And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His
people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).
He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the
Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8).
Salvation comes by grace through faith. Grace is the source of salvation and faith is the
instrument, or condition, of salvation. God is the sole cause of both. "For by grace you have
been saved though faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest
anyone should boast" (Ephesians 2:8, 9). Man is totally undeserving of salvation and by
grace one is led to saving faith. Salvation and faith are both seen as the gifts of God. Faith,
as the instrument of salvation, involves more than just mental assent to standards of belief
or biblical doctrines (though this is certainly necessary), but also is manifested as a personal
trust in the person of Jesus Christ – a confidence in the grace of God as given in Christ.
Moreover the law entered that the offense (sin) might abound. But where sin abounded,
grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign
through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 5:20, 21).
In Christ,
Jeff
