During the 2013-2014 school year, Peer Power continued to demonstrate its positive impact on
the academic performance of our tutors and scholars. Data from the Tennessee Value-Added
Assessment System (TVAAS) show that students enrolled in the program made significant advances
over their predicted performance as well as the performance of their peers. In both Biology and
English II, Peer Power students had results nine percentile points higher than expected. In Algebra,
Peer Power students were predicted to perform in the 23rd percentile, but their observed results
were in the 50th percentile for Tennessee public school students, while other Shelby County Schools
students were in the 34th. On average, the Peer Power students performed 14 percentile points higher than predicted,
while their SCS counterparts demonstrated no improvement. Because many of them attend lower-performing schools, the
Peer Power students were expected to show lower results than SCS students in general, but ultimately, they surpassed all
predictions and ended up ten percentile points higher than students not in the program.
