12 COUNTRY CUP Twice as good in Coffs Harbour THIS CARNIVAL HAS IT COVERED, TWICE - COFFS HARBOUR IS A PICTURESQUE TOWN SURROUNDED BY SEA TO THE EAST AND MOUNTAINS TO THE WEST words & PICTURES: SHARON LENTON Glen Colless returns to scale after winning the Coffs Cup on Pepperwood www.racingnsw.com.au C offs Harbour’s exciting racing carnival (540km north of Sydney) is held over two days and draws racegoers from all over New South Wales and beyond. The first day of the carnival saw the running of the Cabcharge Sportsman’s Raceday and local trainer, Joe Janiak, had a sensational day taking home a winning double with Summer Evening in the first and Polskie Prince in the fifth. On the second day approximately 10,000 keen racegoers turned out to celebrate Horse’s Birthday and to witness history in the Carlton Mid Coffs Harbour Gold Cup. Pepperwood, a nine-year old-gelding by Easy Rocking out of Rhianna Louise, took home back-to-back Cups (2012 and 2013) after gaining a saloon inside passage. The achievement has never been claimed in Coffs Harbour, tipping Pepperwood’s prizemoney to over $1million. Glen Colless rode the horse to perfection to defeat the heavily-backed Single Spirit by two lengths, which had finished hard down the outside of the track. In the lead-up to the carnival the town hosted two new fashion events. Hats & Bubbles was a sell-out to a crowd of over 60 women including Sky Racing’s glamour girl, Christy Johns. Our event company (Sharon Lenton Events) was proud to be associated with the Pier Hotel (a newly renovated hotel owned by dynamic duo couple Kay and Warren Skinner). The event showcased this year’s appropriate winter millinery and was accompanied perfectly with Jacqui’s shoes and bags. A week later Le Dain Designs, a 13 Elyan Shotbolt – winner of the best millinery award new Parisian store in Sawtell, proudly showcased a day of styling to assist in the fashion stakes. It all paid off as the standard of the fashion in this year’s competitions had certainly improved. Dominating the Park Beach Plaza Fashions on the Field were two sisters who were dressed in vintage attire. Tamzin Pike took out this year’s title of best dressed classic woman while her sister, Elyan Shotbolt, won the best millinery award. Husband and wife team Yvette and Gordon Prewett dressed in beautiful matching autumn gold tones, were rightly awarded best dressed couple. Even though it is a two-day carnival, in this town you really wanted to stay twice as long. Vicky Hunter and Megan Skinner www.racingnsw.com.au
