SPANKING CAN HURT YOUR CHILD
PHYSICALLY, EMOTIONALLY AND SOCIALLY.
Things you can do to encourage good behaviour:
• Make a few simple rules that are fair and
reasonable for your child’s age.
• Make sure children know what is expected so
it’s easier for them to cooperate. Be consistent.
• Plan ahead for outings. For example, bring a toy
or a snack when you go shopping.
• Give children time to end their activity. It’s hard
to stop doing something fun.
• Listen and try to understand your child’s point of
view. Help your child use words to express emotions.
• Use humour. Try to make your child laugh and
have fun doing what you ask.
• Offer choices to your child.
• Praise your child for positive behaviour and for trying.
When your child misbehaves:
• Be a positive role model. Show your child how to
handle angry feelings without yelling or hitting.
• Take time to cool off. Stop and think about
how spanking affects your child.
• Choose a consequence that makes sense with
your child’s actions and age. For example, if your
four year old throws a toy, take away the toy
for a short time.
• If your child is “acting up,” give the child some time
to calm down before talking about what happened.
Make a choice not to spank.
