Sixth Grade English and Character Education Coursework
Week of December 5th
Spelling/Mechanics/Vocabulary Objectives:
Students will do the following:
1. Understand and define new words associated with assigned readings.
2. Use words introduced in the vocabulary books in compositions.
3. Apply spelling, capitalization, and punctuation rules and edit daily work for spelling and
mechanics errors.
Work in class:
1. Students will continue to study new vocabulary words both in Latin and in English
classes.
2. Words in Lesson 5, 6 and Lesson 7 of Vocabulary from Classical Roots will be
reviewed.
Homework Assignments:
1. Lesson 5 and 6 vocabulary review on page 37 is due on Tuesday, December 6th.
2. Students will study for a Lessons 5 and 6 vocabulary test on Tuesday, December
13th.
3. Students will study for spelling/vocabulary tests on the following dates with the
following words as the spelling and vocabulary focus:

Grammar/Usage Objectives:
Students will do the following:
1. Review and refine their understanding of the structure of the English language by
studying sentence structure and construction and parts of speech.
2. Review rules governing usage including subject/verb agreement, using verbs, pronouns
and modifiers, and make appropriate word choices when speaking or writing.
Work in class:
1. We will complete our focus on the following terms related to the classification of
sentence parts: complete subject, simple subject, complete predicate and simple predicate.
2. We will continue with Chapter 12 in the grammar book. This will include study of verbs,
adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.
Homework Assignments:
1. Students will study for a linking verb quiz on page 228 for Monday, December 5th.
2. Students will complete Exercises 4, A, and 6 on pages 231-234 for Friday,
December 9th.
3. Students will study for an adverb quiz (questions that adverbs answer and sample
words) on page 233 in the grammar book for Monday, December 12th.
4. Students will complete Exercise B on pages 234-235 for Friday, December 16th.
Literature/Oral Speaking Objectives: Students will do the following:
1. Answer literature questions (both orally and in writing) appropriately based on the type
of questions asked.
2. Read material and be able to understand the meaning of a wide range of material.
3. Present dramatic readings and character sketches.
4. Participate effectively in discussions.
Work in class:
1. Students will discuss how Homer’s works and Aeneas are similar and why.
2. Students will continue working on their research project.
3. Students will continue to work on an Aeneas project in class.
Homework Assignments:
1. Students will complete independent reading and will receive credit each week;
the form needs to be completely filled in before entering class on each Tuesday.
Students will read Aeneas and will record reading this Tuesday.
2. Students will continue to read for the ancient Greek research project.
Composition Objectives:
Students will do the following:
1. Use the writing process to compose essays.
2. Differentiate the types of writing and how to structure essays accordingly.
3. Use writing rubrics and teacher feedback to assess areas of strengths and weaknesses in
essays.
Work in class:
1. Students will continue with their research project. The research due dates are as follows:
Outline: November 29th
First Draft: December 6th
Works Cited: December 8th
Final Project: December 12th and December 13th (This includes presentation of the final
paper and project.)
Homework:
Homework includes working on the research paper and the construction of the
project to go with research.
Character Education Objectives:
Students will do the following:
1. Understand the language of the cardinal virtues of justice, prudence, temperance, and
fortitude.
2. Recognize how the vocabulary of virtue applies to their lives and to the lives of
historical figures as well as to people in the news.
3. Practice setting character goals and performing service for others in and out of school.
Work in class:
1. Students will continue to discuss what it means to perform community
service/service learning at school and at home.
2. Students will begin their second “Courage to Care” unit.
Homework:
Students should begin their third project.
