One student from each class was asked to represent Hermantown at this writing conference. Students will hear from a “real author” and learn more about the writing process. Drew Sams will be representing our class this year. Can’t wait to hear what Drew learns! March 29‐April 2 We continue work using two-digit subtraction to solve problems. Please note that knowing subtraction facts well pays dividends now. For example when subtracting 42 – 17, students regroup the 42 into 3 tens and 12 ones. It is important that students know 12 – 7 quickly and easily. 3 12 42 -17 Animal Reports & Posters We had a successful week of researching and writing animal reports. A few students have already turned in their posters as well. Students, who want to, will be allowed to give their animal presentations this week. Reports and posters are due Tuesday, April 6. “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” ‐Albert Einstein M athematics Two-Digit Subtraction I am looking for someone who would be willing to sew two “bags” to be used for Balto, his book, and his journal. The bags I used this year are near the end of their life span. If you have that skill and are willing do it, let me know. I’m remembering the gym shoe bags my mom used to make for me as a kid… only with cooler fabric. $69.24 Donation Made Your kids donated 459 pennies, 136 nickels, 231 dimes, 69 quarters, and 17 dollars. The check for $69.24 was given to Mrs. Tabor to be sent to Haiti. Kids are good! Problem Solving The primary focus of mathematics is problem solving. We practice problem our solving skills everyday. When students arrive they use math to solve problems. Look to see how well your child does at choosing addition or subtraction. How well he or she does at sorting out important information? Correct answers maybe nice, I believe it is more important to show thinking with pictures, words, and numbers. Keep an eye out for problems where your child needs to show their thinking. Your help in developing your child’s problem solving skills is appreciated. Thank you! M iscellaneous Balto Bags Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!” ~Robin Williams
