President Jenny Johnson called to order the Community Council meeting, and welcomed all
in attendance. Next President Johnson presented the minutes from the October 28, 2015
meeting. The minutes were approved by all members in attendance.
Jenny talked about how Shane gave a presentation to the board on the School Improvement
Plan. We have many new members on the committee and I would like Shane to go over the
School Improvement Plan so all of us can understand it. Shane talked about what datat we
used and that was SAGE results this shows what areas we needed to improve in. We also
used some data from our Intervention program on how many F’ are being given out. This
helps us know if what we are doing is working. The areas that we are focusing on are
Language Arts, Math Core, and Science. The Language Arts and Math Core are mandated by
the State. We would like to include an ESL Goal. The ESL goal would be to see all students
advance one level. This is something that we will implement into our School Improvement
plan this coming year. How we decided what our goals will be is, we meet with department
heads and let them know the three areas that we are focusing on. They are 1. What are the
skills we want to assess; 2. What tool will be use to assess the skills; 3. What will we do to
progress monitor student’s skills along the way? The department go back and meet and
then we all come back together to get the end results for the PLAN. It’s always very hard to
come up with the DATA because we have to start early in the year. I go to the board in
November and it has to be approved and submitted by March. I will attach a copy of the
School Improvement Plan for all to review. A questioned that was asked was is the different
between School Improvement Plan and LandTrust. School Improvement Plan is required by
the District and LandTrust is required by the State. The Community Council only approves
the LandTrust budget. The District likes the community council to assign off of the School
Improvement Plan. A District goal that Superintendent Schofield would like to see over the
next five years is the ACT scores is comparable with the National scores. We had a
discussion on what that percentage would be, but was not for sure Shane was going to grab
the ACT papers and get that number but we got too busy and ran out of time. We will
provide that at the next meeting. We use the same goals for our LandTrust that are on our
School Improvement Plan, we just have to modify it to the state standards.
Jenny had her own personal concern. She wonders if spending money out of LandTrust is
the best use of the money. Why did we choose a Special Ed. Teacher? Shane indicated a
Special Ed. Teacher is a good fit. They know how to deal with students who are struggling.
How much time does Alma spend with students? Shane indicated that Alma has about 10
students each day that he works with. These students are sometimes the same students but
he always has new ones. With spending a portion out of LandTrust Alma would only be
required be with students about 3 ½ hours a day. Shane let the council know that it will be
up to them next year how the money will be spent. He indicated we need to find out what
the greatest need is and that is where the money should go.
Next item on the agenda was South Campus getting a percentage of LandTrust money.
Monica a former teacher of Logan High School is now a part time counselor and a part time
math teacher at South Campus. Monica asked the secretary Jenn Olsen how much they used
to get. They used to get around $3000 to $5000. They would spend it on art supplies and
other supplies needed for the school. The money can’t be allocated towards supplies. This is
something that was not passed along as to what they could spend the money on. These are
some areas that they need help in Math and English. They need to get some book sets for
English and they need extra help in Math. Shane said we could send a Math aide down!
Monica was not for sure if that would help. Would you like me to talk with Julie and see if
this is something that could work? Monica said that would be great. I told Monica to talk
with Anita Shuman at USU to see if they could get some students teachers to help in the
areas needed. Also we can’t spend LandTrust on books, but Jason told them to apply for the
mini grants through the foundation to help buy the books that they need. The council was
for South Campus receiving a portion of the LandTurst money. This is something we will
have to allocate for next year. Monica was given some idea that could help them in the areas
were they need help. Hopefully it will be a good start.
They wanted to know how the math aides are going. We have them all hired and all is going
well. Peer tutor is still trying to get enough kids signed up. I think when they get enough
signed up it will be a good program. It’s just still so new.
In January we will start the ACT prep class. This is the John Baylor program. We will start
with juniors but it will be open to any student. This will be offered during lunch and it will
take about 45 minutes so students will need to take their lunches with them.
Shane wanted to let everyone know that the District has hired a part time web master. This
position is for District wide but he will start with the Logan High web page.
