ADMINISTRATOR’S MESSAGE
January is coming to a close and so is the first semester for high school students and the end of term 2
for the middle school.
February will be the start of the second half of the school year with many exciting things happening at
Churchill in academics, athletics and extra curricular clubs. The staff is ready for another productive
term. Report cards from term 2 will be sent home with all students on Friday February 8th. There are
no scheduled parent teacher interviews this reporting period however we encourage parents and
guardians to review their child’s report card. Feel free to contact any of the teachers if you have any
questions or concerns.
Plans for 2013/2014 are underway. There are upcoming opportunities for families to come and visit
the school. On Wednesday February 13th, there are a number of elementary schools sending their
grade 6 students for an opportunity to participate in middle years classes. Students will gain valuable
experiences in order for them to make decisions. On the same day, Wednesday February 13th, there
will be an Open House where visitors will have an opportunity to visit the facilities. Doors will open at
6:30 p.m. in the Senior Gym presentations start at 7:00 p.m. The evening will provide visitors with an
excellent showcase of the various programs and activities at Churchill. Classroom teachers will provide
overviews of their courses, samples of classroom assignments and/or interactive demonstrations. In
addition, they will provide information on extra-curricular activities they manage.
Also on that evening, Wednesday February 13th, there will be an information meeting for the grade
11/12 students. The meeting takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the library. This event will help families make
informed decisions regarding post secondary education.
To help us through the cold weather in February, the annual spirit week has been planned from Tuesday February 19th to Friday February 22nd. Spirit week will include the traditional Gym Riot as well as
wacky theme dress up days.
The month will conclude with the middle school going out to Winter Camp from February 27th to March
1st. The students and staff will have an excellent outdoor experience at Camp Cedarwood participating
in cross country skiing, snow shoeing, hay rides, tobogganing, etc...
Lastly, this winter has been particularly cold. Please remind your child to dress warm and to be careful
on the slippery roads.

Highlights in Humanities
One of the main goals of our humanities department is to encourage an appreciation for the arts,
literature, and various issues on both the local and global levels. This year we have been able to
provide our students with a variety of activities and experiences that will hopefully continue to foster this
appreciation as they move towards graduation. The following is a quick snapshot of the various
activities provided to the students of Churchill High School by our humanities department:
The grade 7/8 Flexible Learning class completed a student-led project in which they created a
class sized labyrinth of ancient civilizations.
The grade 9 social studies classes visited and toured the Manitoba Legislature as part of their
unit on Canadian Government.
The grade 9 students in Ms. Costa’s History of Hip Hop class visited and toured the Winnipeg
Graffiti Gallery. They also participated in a 2 week workshop with spoken word/visual artist
Nereo Eugenio.
The grade 10 students participated in the annual career fair. The students were responsible
for researching a career choice and creating a presentation which was then judged and
graded by a group of career interns from various schools.
The grade 11/12 students attended the Manitoba Theatre Centre’s production of Aaron
Sorkin’s A Few Good Men.
Select grade 9-12 students attended the Youth in Leadership 3 day conference sponsored by
The Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties. The focus of this year’s conference
was to raise awareness on various First Nations issues.
The first half of the school year has been extremely eventful and we look forward to providing even more
opportunities for our students in the second semester.

Transportation
For those families who utilize the
school bus, we would like to share
very important phone numbers for
your convenience should you have
any questions or concerns:
Winnipeg School Division Transportation
Department—789-0442
First Student Canada - 586-8880
When inquiring with First Student Canada, please
remember the route number of the bus your child
is on.
If your child cannot take the bus on any particular
day, please call the school before 2:30 p.m., send
a note to the classroom teacher or come to the
office to let the staff know of the change. If there
is no phone call, note or visit to the office, your
child will be placed on the school bus.
The bus cannot wait at the school for any children
who are running late. Please talk to your child
about the
importance of going directly to the
bus area as soon as the dismissal bell rings.
Severe Allergies
While we can not guarantee an allergy-free school
environment, we do make a concerted effort to
assist families of children with severe allergies.
For those with severe food allergies, even the
slightest trace of an allergic food can cause a life
threatening reaction. In our experience, most of
the allergies we see are related to peanuts,
however the list of allergens is growing. Reaction
to peanuts do not occur because someone ate a
peanut product, but
because they unwittingly
touched peanut oil or butter left by someone else.
Please make as many non-peanut choices for
lunch and snacks as possible. This will assist in
ensuring that cross-contamination does not occur.
We will post signs at each classroom door if a
severe allergy is present in the classroom and
teachers will discuss this matter with all students
early on the first day of the new school year. Your
cooperation with this initiative is greatly
appreciated.

What came first, ice-cream
or the ice-cream cone?
Did you know that Ice cream comes in almost
any flavor you could think of including: avocado,
garlic, azuki bean, jalapeno, and pumpkin!
The most preferred flavor of ice-cream of all
is vanilla flavored! Next would be chocolate,

Home-made Vanilla Ice-cream
were served in Italian and French royal courts.
Ingredients:
1 can (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 can evaporated milk
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
2 cups whole milk
Preparation:
Ice-cream was consumed out of a small glass called
a penny lick for a penny cone which you would lick
the ice-cream off the dish and then return the dish to
the vendor. Dishes went fast and it was hard to
keep up on a hot summer day. If you wanted your
ice-cream in a “take-away” form it was wrapped in
paper called a “hokey pokey”
In a large bowl or pitcher, combine all ingredients
until smooth. Cover and chill 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Transfer milk mixture into freezer container/canister
of an ice-cream maker and freeze according to
manufacturers instructions.
Remove container with ice cream from ice-cream
maker and eat at once or store in an air-tight container up to 1 week.
Ice-cream in a cup became know as a “toot” which ENJOY!!!!!
may have derived from the Italian word “tutti” or “all”
as customers were urged to “eat the full serving of
ice-cream”.
During the 1700’s, ice-cream was referred to as
“iced pudding” or “ice cream puddings”. The cones
used were referred to as wafers. Wafers were considered as “stomach settlers” and were served at
the end of the meal to calm digestion.
The first true ice-cream cone, used for icecream is said to have been invented by the Italian
immigrants living in Manchester, England area during the mid 1800’s. Large shipments of ice were
shipped from Norway to England where they were

A: Pi a ‘la mode.
A young man entered the Ice Cream Palace and
asked, "What kinds of ice cream do you have?"
"Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry," the girl wheezed
as she spoke, patted her chest and seemed unable
to continue.
"Do you have laryngitis?" the young man asked
sympathetically.
"Nope," she whispered, "just vanilla, chocolate
and strawberry." A man approaches an ice cream
van and asks, "I'd like two scoops of chocolate ice
cream, please."
The girl behind the counter replied, "I'm very sorry,
sir, but our delivery didn't come this morning. We're
out of chocolate."
"In that case," the man continued, "I'll have two
scoops of chocolate ice cream."

"You don't understand, sir," the girl says. "We have
no chocolate."
"Then just give me some chocolate," he insists.
Getting angrier by the second, the girl asked, "Sir,
will you spell 'van,' as in 'vanilla?'"
The man spells, "V A N."
"Now spell 'straw,' as in 'strawberry.'"
"OK. S-T-R-A-W."
"Now," the girl asked, "spell 'stink,' as in chocolate."
The man hesitates, then confused, replied, "There
is no stink in chocolate."
"That's what I've been trying to tell you!" she
screams!
