GENERAL
Little Narnia is located in the pretty village of Dunkeld
in Highland Perthshire. Dunkeld is one of the best
preserved and historic villages in Scotland and is located
in the heart of Perthshire’s Big Tree Country. It is a popular
location with many amenities including a selection of
coffee shops, restaurants, gift and retail shops with a lively
arts, music scene and galleries. There is a convenience
supermarket, post office, doctors surgery and primary
school. The majestic Cathedral located by a stunning
riverside location, with origins from the 12th century is still
the parish church and is host to concerts throughout the
year.
The area offers many interesting walks with the local
countryside offering a wonderful array of vibrancy during
the seasons. The area is said to have been the inspiration
for the tale of Peter Rabbit during Beatrix Potter’s many
countryside walks during her holidays to the area when
she stayed at Eastwood House. There is plenty to keep
wildlife enthusiasts busy with the local woodlands being
home to the red squirrel. Otters, dippers and wagtails
can be seen along the riverside and salmon can be
seen leaping at The Hermitage, Pitlochry Dam & Salmon
Ladder, Soldiers Leap at Killiecrankie and the Linn of
Tummel. Higher up the mountains are home to red deer,
golden eagles, red grouse and merlin as well as the
osprey migrating from western Africa to Scotland each
Spring.
Loch of the Lowes near Dunkeld is a designated wildlife
reserve and home to a pair of breeding ospreys, red
squirrels, otters and beavers. Up to 3,000 migrant greylag
geese roost on the loch and goldeneyes, mallards,
goosanders, wigeons, teals, tufted ducks and great
crested grebes can also be seen.
The Dunkeld and Birnam Golf Club is one of the most
picturesque in Perthshire and other golf courses nearby
include the 18 hole golf course in Pitlochry, The Blair
Atholl Golf Club and the Strathtay golf course. Further
recreational facilities can be found at The Erigmore Estate
Leisure Park, located on the edge of Birnam. Facilities
such as an indoor swimming pool with spa and sauna,
restaurant and children’s outdoor play area can be found.
The Tay Forest Park is within easy reach and includes
some of Scotland’s tallest trees and best view points of
lochs and mountains.
Pitlochry, 13 miles north, is a gold medal winner from the
Royal Horticultural Society in the Britain in Bloom campaign.
