Our thanks to all families for their continued support of both teachers
and students. We have had a very successful semester with a long list
of excellent student outcomes and hope that this is reflected in your
individual student reports.
Here are some ideas to consider when you open your child’s report:
Focus on strengths. Do you look for strengths or weaknesses first? The
challenge is to focus on strengths as you work to build areas that are
not as strong.
Take into account your child’s effort and attitude to learning. If the report
indicates that effort is below standard, then you have something to work
on. If your child is putting in the required effort, then discuss the grade
and ask what they might do differently.
Broaden your focus away from academic performance to form a picture
of your child’s progress as a member of a community. How your child
gets along with his or her peers will influence his/her happiness and
well-being, as well as give an indicator to their future. The skills of independence and co-operation are highly valued by employers so don’t
dismiss these as unimportant.
Take note of student self-assessment. Kids are generally very honest
and will give a realistic assessment of their progress. They are generally
very perceptive, so take note of their opinions.
Discuss the report with your son or daughter talking about strengths first
before looking at areas that need improvement. Ask for their opinion
about how they performed and discuss their concerns.
If you have any lingering concerns about reports, please contact the
classroom teacher or Year Coordinator via email or through the Front
Office.

Student Attendance
We would like to continue the focus next semester on full participation
and to that end we have been working on ways to improve, monitor and
report to you about attendance. Our partnership with you is the most important contribution to the success of you child as they progress through

the school. Please remember that if text messages are sent in error, we are just being vigilant around where
students are throughout the day and we will clear up any anomalies as quickly as we can.
If a student is absent for any period, the school needs a note from a parent/carer. This note can be handed
to the Roll Group teacher or the Rolls Office on the first day the student returns to school. Parents/carers,
who know that their child will be absent for a significant period, can inform the Rolls Office by email, letter or
telephone call.

Facility Upgrades
Next semester will see a number of major upgrades to the school that will cause some disruption. Work will
begin on the refurbishment of Mr McNamara’s Science lab and then there will be a major refit of the roof of
the school to follow. As you may also be aware, the school was very fortunate to receive a significant upgrade
to the oval. Construction should commence early 2016 on two full size soccer pitches (one synthetic and one
grass) associated change rooms and bleachers as well as a resurfacing of all hard courts. The ACT Government has invested around $8.5 million on Melrose High School in the 2015/16 Budget.
Feedback to Expert Panel Request:
The Expert Panel has been appointed by the ACT Minister for Education and Training to review policy and
practice for supporting and teaching students with complex needs and challenging behaviours in ACT schools.
The Expert Panel would like to hear from schools, teachers, other professionals, families, students and everyone concerned about these issues. We are interested in your experiences and suggestions for improving
policy and practice in ACT schools. Submissions are due by 31 July 2015.
From the Business Manager:
Fiona Dempsey will be on leave for Term 3. We welcome Debbie Whitton to the team in her absence. Debbie
can be contacted on [email protected] if you have any financial enquiries. Semester 2 family
invoices will be mailed in the first week Term 3; part payments are always welcomed.

Message from the Minister
During Public Education Week this year, I launched the Canberra Public Schools web portal. http://www.det.
act.gov.au/canberra-public-schools
The Canberra Public Schools webpage is a ‘one-stop shop’ for you to find information specifically about Canberra public schools. The webpage has a fresh look and feel, and contains important information, feature
articles and useful links. It also has a search function for you to search for schools by geographic area, details
on curriculum, programs and student enrolment. The page also links to useful information including school
websites, holiday and school term information, ACTION Buses and SunSmart.
The Canberra Public Schools webpage is also links to the ‘Parents and Students at the Centre’, ‘Trending
#successstories’, and ‘Public School Alumni’ pages. These pages contain stories and articles about the
achievements our schools, teachers, principals, alumni and students.
I encourage you to explore the new webpage, and let us know your thoughts. Please email DET.Media@act.
gov.au with your feedback. As you know, Canberra public schools are fantastic and students deserve to have
their successes shared.

Peer Support Program
On Monday of week 10, a special celebration was held to mark the end of the Peer Support program for 2015.
The celebration included a sausage sizzle and a selection of games and activities for our year seven students
to enjoy, all of which were run by their year 10 Peer Support Leaders.
This year has been another successful year for the Peer Support Program at Melrose High School. 62 year
10 students were chosen as Peer Support Leaders after successfully completing the training program in year
9, and submitting written applications to be considered. These students then took part in a training camp at
Birrigai at the end of 2014.
Over the semester, these leaders have worked in two leadership classes, run by Mrs Thompson and Mr
Sciberras, to prepare a series of lessons for the year seven students. These lessons were taught once per
fortnight over the semester and included topics like teamwork, bullying, conflict resolution, friendship, anger
management and goal setting. The year 10 students also learned about leadership skills and styles, group
management techniques, lesson planning and teamwork
as part of their course.
This year’s peers support leaders have proven themselves
to be an amazing group of young leaders. They have demonstrated tremendous amounts of initiative, reliability and
self-discipline in running the year 7 program this year, and
they have developed skills that will hold them in good stead
in their future careers. The year 7 students have also done
themselves proud through their participation in the program. Well done to everyone involved!

Australian Business Week
Every year since 2002, Melrose High School has run the popular one-week business simulation event
called “Australian Business Week” (ABW) for Year 10 students. This year ABW at Melrose High School
will be held in Week 10 of Term 3 – Monday 21 September to Friday 25 September.
The ABW program is designed to encourage independent and cooperative learning skills and to develop
an enterprise mindset prior to entering the workforce or proceeding to further study. It exposes participants to the issues of coping with stress and effective time management, both major issues that impact
on students in the later years of high school and college.
During ABW, Year 10 students are divided into teams of 10 to 12 and spend five days having fun working
together to:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Manage a business through a computer simulation;
Learn from guest speakers from business and the community;
Develop a new product of their own invention;
Create a video and trade display to advertise their product;
Give an oral and written report of the week’s activities; and
Interact with business people and teachers as facilitators.
Participation in ABW is worth 10% of each student’s final mark in SOSE for Semester 2. Students who
do not complete the program will have to complete an alternative piece of work, a written research assignment.
While the cost of $65 per student may seem a large amount of money it represents very good value for a
five-day package. For the money, students have access to a highly refined educational program, trained
mentors and a computer simulation program. The school pays $54 per student to the ABW organisation
for use of the program. The remaining money helps the school buy resources that the students need to
make their products, film their video ads etc. Students in previous years report that they found the program to be very good value for money and a highlight of their time at Melrose High School.
If any parents or carers have connections with any businesses that may be able to assist the program
(donations of materials, sponsorship, judges etc.) please contact me on: 6205 7588 or rachel.mcgann@

We do have strong, ongoing connections with the businesses listed below.
Notes have been given to the Year 10 students via their SOSE classes. If you did not receive one, please

South Weston Network Planning Day
“Around 1 in 7 people in the world is living in poverty” - This is one example of the statistics Alfred Deakin,
Mount Stromlo, Melrose, and Telopea SRC students learnt about world poverty during the South Weston
Network Planning Day.
The day took place on the 26th of June at Mount Stromlo High School and focused on the 40 Hour Famine
and World Vision. The purpose of the day was to inspire high school students to make a difference in the
world and our community, “We were made aware of the things that World Vision do and the 40 Hour Famine
and the whole process of it” said a Melrose High student.
In a session facilitated by Jeeven from World Vision the students watched two different videos which followed the story of two young girls aged 9 and 12, both living in poverty. In one of the videos, World Vision
had helped one of the communities, while in the other; World Vision had not yet worked in that community.
By watching these two videos the students were able to see the impact and difference World Vision can have
and what money we fundraise might be able to achieve.
In the afternoon students discussed plans to facilitate
the 40 Hour Famine in each network high school and
began work on marketing materials. The 40 Hour Famine will run in week 4 of next term (14-16 August). Each
school will run their own 40 Hour Famine, but resources will be shared and total funds will be combined. As
a network we are aiming to reach $25 000.
Further information will be coming out soon on how to
join our school’s famine page.

Dance News
On Friday 26 June two dance students took part in the AusDance Dance Festival Choreography workshop,
in preparation for their performance in Term 3 at the Canberra Theatre. Sophie Watts and Lachlan Sheather
worked alongside the Dance Festival Creative Director, Jamie Winbank, and a number of students from
participating school to explore different concepts, devices and rehearsal ideas. The students from Melrose
created some stunning choreography and had the opportunity to develop and explore their ideas further using some of the choreographic tools that Jamie had shared with them. The Year 9 and 10 students will be
working collaboratively next term to choreograph, costume and perform their piece at the Canberra Theatre,
alongside over 60 other schools.
Visual Arts news
Funky Shoes – Ceramic Portraiture
Last term Year 9 and 10 Melrose High School Visual Arts students had the opportunity to attend the Stepping Up – Ceramics Workshop as part of the 14th Australian Ceramics Triennial. The workshop was run by
practicing ceramics artists Joanne Searle and Ashley Bauman. They taught the attending students about
the medium of clay.
This term students were asked to create a ceramic shoe to represent a famous person or icon that they are
interested in. Their ‘Funky Shoe’ needed to represent their chosen person’s personality, interests and why
they are famous or important to the student. They were asked to use slab and coil techniques, two techniques they learnt about in the workshop.
Students used the six D’s of the Solution Fluency taken from the Global Digital Citizen Foundations - 21st
Century Fluencies. The students worked through defining the problem, discovering and researching information, dream of a solution, design the solution, deliver the solution by producing and publishing the product
and finally debrief the process and product to review the process and, analyse areas of strength and areas
for improvement.
Some of the celebrity’s students chose were Robert Downey Jr., Taylor Swift, Channing Tatum, Ed Sheeran,
Stephen King, Steve Irwin, Natalia Osipova, Stan Lee, Eminem and Kylie Jenna to name just a few.

Drama News
Yr 7 and 8 rotation
What an awesome term of Drama for the year 7’s and 8’s experiencing the subject for the first time!
All students had a ball learning about stage use, the seven tableau rules, the crafts of improvisation and
modern mime, as well as experiencing heaps of warm up games and class exercises.
All students developed the ability to devise, rehearse and perform some hilarious and often moving scenes.
Year 9 and 10 Drama
Congratulations to the year 9’s who adventurously selected Drama as one of their electives to study during
their two years as a senior at Melrose High. The year 9’s have been immersed in devising, learning and presenting monologues, short scenes and self- devised written performances that were presented formally at assemblies and Entertainment Night. The students are all to be commended for the way that they took a grasp
of many new concepts and techniques and received appreciative responses from their given audiences!
Year 10 ACE Performance Drama
The ACE Performance class took on the challenge this semester of learning Laban’s system of expressive
movement, the realistic acting style and ‘System’ of Konstantin Stanislavski and the style and stock characters of the Italian Commedia Dell Arte. This class was amazing and one of the most dedicated and talented
that I have had the pleasure of teaching in my career.
Entertainment Night 2015
According to many of the capacity hall audience” Quite possibly the best Entertainment Night ever!”
The students were truly focussed, professional and committed to every performance they took part in. The
ACE class blew us away with their two self- written and stylised Commedia performances, the year 9/10 class
made us reflect on “Those That Went Before Us” through the medium of ritual and symbolism and the year 9
class wrote and performed three well –polished, short plays.
The Year 10 ACE Performance class are now looking forward to their major production at the end of the year,
coinciding with Arts Fest where all the Arts can once again showcase their skills.
I would like to thank the Melrose executive and the fabulous Melrose Arts/Tech team for their support through
the process of putting on this amazing Entertainment Night. From the unbelievable Dance and Music performances, Art displays, the Executive team covering classes for rehearsals, filming the night, making programs
and posters, organising the catering and front of house, to just sharing a coffee when needed, it was truly a
great team effort that brought many smiles to the students, their teachers and parents.

Da Vinci Decathlon
What is the da Vinci Decathlon?
The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students compete in
teams of eight across 10 disciplines including engineering, mathematics,
code breaking, art and poetry, science and English.
Why da Vinci?
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the world’s greatest thinkers and scholars. da Vinci demonstrated an ability to perceive the interconnected nature of knowledge and embraced learning with a lifelong passion and determination to uncover the unknown. The Decathlon
competition places a particular emphasis on higher order thinking skills,
problem solving and creativity.
On a very cold morning in in May 16 students (Years 7/8) from Melrose headed to Canberra Grammar
School. We met at the PE hall where we signed in and then proceeded to our the tables. There were 22
Year 7 teams and 26 Year 8 teams for a total of nearly 400 students. We had two teams. One Year seven
team which included Emma Woodford, Casey Magnussen, Diana Marshall (Team Captain), Alesia Avakian,
Callum Loaney (VC) Andrew Pajalic, Eric Swansborough and Ben James. Our second team was a blended
Year 7/8 team which included Grace Hindmarch (Team Captain), Elisabeth Hall, Ashling Donnelly, Jace
Vaughan (VC), Samuel Wilson-Clarkson, Jacob Wu, and Jack Crossley.
We had had some practice sessions at lunch time and we were not sure what to expect on the day. No
teachers were allowed near the tables once the day begun. We had to work together, divide some roles and
tried our best.
Session 1 8:40 – 10:20
•Science – students will be provided with higher level scientific concepts and be tested on their ability to
apply.
•Creative producers – a sub-group from the team will develop and present a 30 second commercial to promote a particular product “It’s a wonderful world”
•English – spelling (can you spell the word saccharine?), definitions, word origins, definitions, scrabble and
writing tasks.
•Philosophy – logic, observations and evidence.
Session 2 10:45 – 12:45
•Mathematics – problem solving, number patterns and logic puzzles
•Engineering challenge – a building task to test creativity and ingenuity
•Art and poetry – the team ill develop a poem and a complementary work of art on a given theme
•Cartography – reading maps and using skills to design maps of the imagination
Session 3 1:30 – 2:50
•Code breaking
•General knowledge – current affairs, entertainment, sport and trivia
After a fun day, (which included a pizza lunch) the results were announced
and Melrose High was third overall for the Year 7 team competition. The
Year 7/8 also fared well but did not make the top 10 team. Congratulations
to our two teams.

Indonesian News
This term Narrabundah College invited Year 9 and 10 students from nearby high schools to come and visit
their purpose built languages centre where they currently offer eight different languages. Students enjoyed a traditional Indonesian lunch and
were shown around by current students studying Indonesian in Year 11
or 12. The tour included a section of the library containing an impressive collection of Indonesian books and novels. College students talked
about why they chose to continue, or begin learning Indonesian and
what language classes were like at college.
The students also enjoyed a range of games and activities prepared
by the older students including traditional games played at Independence Day celebrations, a quiz about Indonesian culture and activities
designed to practise language skills.
Indonesian Language Assistant: Melrose High School has been lucky enough to have a native speaking language assistant come in regularly for the past few years. This year we have been assigned a new Indonesian
assistant, Eni Sulistiani. Eni is originally from Yogyakarta on the island of Java and will be at Melrose High
School assisting in the Indonesian classroom every Tuesday.
Language Perfect: All Indonesian students were registered to enter a competition called Language Perfect
World Championships. This was an online competition where students got points for answering vocabulary
questions correctly in the target language. The students loved the competitive nature of the program and
spent many hours competing in their own time. Melrose High School finished 3rd in the ACT for Indonesian
out of 20 schools. Congratulations to all the students who participated and especially those who made it to
the honour board.
Jumpstart into the Construction Industry Graduation
Congratulations to two of our year 10 students, Matthew Wallace and Joshua Buchs, who graduated from the Jumpstart into the Construction Industry
FLO course. This FLO (Flexible Learning Option) is offered through the Education and Training Directorate in conjunction with industry training providers, and entailed these students attending the course outside of school for
two days per week over most of term two. Having successfully completed
the course, they have been awarded a nationally recognized Certificate 1 in
Construction, as well as their White Card and Asbestos Awareness qualifications. Well done Matt and Josh!

SRC President Report
This term has been life changing for me. I never thought that I would have been given the
opportunity to work with such great people. To be able to tackle each and every problem
the SRC has faced with them, to listen to their ideas and problems and to make new and
great friends.
I also never thought of how much this SRC has made an impact on the school in these
past two terms. When I sit there and look back and think about it, ‘Wow, did we really do
all that in just one semester?’ All of our events this semester have been a great success.
However, none of them would have happened without our great SRC, and also without our
students and our forever supporting staff members.
We have done a lot for some really good charities throughout the semester – this term, we raised a whopping
$653.15 for Pink Ribbon Day and last week, we held our Pancake Day for the Canberra Blind Society and
raised $240.80.
I’d also like to focus on this term’s school social. It will be in Week 10 Thursday (2 July) from 7-10pm. I was
surprised and thrilled when I found out how many tickets we sold in such a short amount of time leading up to
the social. We couldn’t have done this without a few of our super proactive SRC members who made it their
number one goal to make sure that the social went ahead.
This semester the SRC has dramatically evolved not only itself, but the school and the attitude of students
towards the SRC. Our SRC members are the greatest group of students, and there is no group of people
who I would rather work with.

Congratulations to the members of the Melrose Cross Country team that won the overall championships at
the Southside Secondary Cross Country Championships on May 18th. At the ACT Championships on June
1st Josh Torley won the U18 boy’s race and Benjamin Cadden placed 6th in the U16 boy’s race. Both have
now qualified to represent the ACT at the National Schools Cross Country Championships in Melbourne at
the end of August.
Congratulations to the Melrose High School girl’s hockey team that were the Co-ACT Champions on June
10th. The team was a composite 7-10 team and all the girls played especially well. Chloe Ives, Emma Bowbrick, Breanne Runge, and Greta Lueschen controlled the middle of the field during all the games, and Ashling Donnelly played extremely well in defence. Goal keeper Lauren Freeman did not allow any goals during
the six games played. Well done to all the girls and this fantastic achievement.
The Tour de France starts this weekend and this year two former Melrose students will be competing. Good

fascinating story behind these ancient survivors. Explore the petrified wood in the National Bonsai Collection
and make your very own botanical fossil to take home.
Can you discover the hidden colours in nature? Be challenged to look beyond the colours you can easily see
and find the hidden ones. Then create your own hidden colour artwork using pastels and inspired by flowers
from the Arboretum.
