How do poverty, health, water and environment, gender, disasters, conflicts and
population growth affect food security? :
To help you understand, read the sentences below. After you read each sentence decide if it is
most connected to poverty, health, water and environment, gender, disasters, conflicts or
population growth. Write each sentence in one of the boxes on page 6.
More and more productive land cannot be used because of environmental damage.
Farmers stop working in order to fight in conflicts.
When people don`t get enough nourishment they become sick and weak. They can`t work or produce
food.
Women can`t get enough knowledge about nutrition, food safety and disease prevention. As a result,
they can`t improve the way they use food to feed their families.
Cities are getting bigger because more people are moving there. Productive land is used to build new
houses and buildings.
Poor people don`t have enough money to produce or buy healthy food.
Productive land, food that is being grown and food and seeds that are in storage are destroyed by wars.
Poor farmers have small farms. They don`t have enough money to use technology to help them grow
more food for their families or to sell for income.
Hungry and malnourished mothers give birth to unhealthy babies. Unhealthy babies become unhealthy
adults.
Women have lower levels of education, training, land ownership and income than men. As a result, it is
difficult for them to improve their access to and use of food.
When there are wars, farmers leave their farms to go somewhere safe so, farming stops and no food is
grown.
Countries that have don`t have enough water or have environmental damage must import most of their
food. This increases the cost which affects poor people.
Unsafe food and water cause poor nutrition, disease and sometimes death.
Food, seeds and animals are destroyed or eaten by soldiers during conflicts.
Food production uses a lot of water. If a country doesn`t have enough water, it can`t produce enough
food. This is a problem because there are water shortages in many countries.
In order to grow food to feed people in expanding cities, land which is far away must be used. This
increases the cost of producing and transporting the food.
Productive land cannot be used after wars until it is cleared and made safe again.
Productive land, food that is being grown and food and seeds that are in storage are destroyed by
floods, droughts, tsunamis, earthquakes etc.
