Freedom of speech in Australia Submission 395 21/11/16 Submissions re 18C enquiry. I am an ordinary citizen of a country that has plainly lost its way. It grieves me that I live in a society where true democracy is preached but certainly not practiced, with respect to the reality of Government Legislation. Unfortunately, this practice has been supported by successive Governments since the introduction of 18C in 1975. Governments and The Human Rights Commission have taken it upon themselves, to control via the Courts, as to what we can and cannot say. This is enacted under the deceptive guise of protecting the feelings of certain individuals. It seems that while the 18C Legislation exists in total, the Government is cuddling, smooching and lovingly holding the hands of a few and then muzzling we ordinary Australians with respect to voicing an opinion, due to a Law that totally supports that silencing. It would be of massive concern to the ordinary citizen if this indeed was the only outcome of this 18C Legislation. Unfortunately, it is not, and that is the massive deception that lurks beneath its offensive surface. This Law has been used with extreme effect against those who publicly speak the truth. This wicked law can then be a very effective Political tool, in silencing those that one apposes. Indeed, we ordinary Australians must pose the question; do those who wield Political Power and support 18C's continuance, then find the lawful suppression of free speech of the ordinary Australian, _to their own Ideological advantage? Indeed, if this is the case we as a country have declined even further into moral decay. The suppression of Free Speech has other insidious effects, suppression of ideas and problem solving are just two. Canberra itself has hugely extended the suppression of speech into many other areas of the life of those who live within its boundaries. When will those who have the power to repeal such regressive Legislation aimed at ordinary Australians, wake up. As we have observed recently even on a Global scale, we ordinary people have the capacity to find our voice. When this occurs it can deliver a powerful message. I sincerely trust that you will consider the above points. It is of utmost urgency that true freedom is restored to we ordinary Australians. Yours sincerely, Michael Cane.
