Summary
Afterbeggingandbegginghisparentsforcoon
hounds,Billyfindsamagazinefor2coonhounds
for$40.Hesavesuphismoneyfor2years,gives
themoneyforthedogstohisGrandpa,andafew
dayslater,theyarrive!Ontheirwayhome,they
hearacougarandOldDanbarksatit.Hetrains
themtohuntcoonsandafterawhileoftraining,
theygohunting.Atfirstthecoontricksthem,but
eventuallytheycatchit.Hesavestheirhidesand
eventually,thewalliscoveredincoonhides!
AfterhearingabouthowgoodBillyisabout
catchingcoons,RubinandRainiePritchardmakea
betthathecan'tcatchthe"GhostCoon".Billy
catchesit,butfeelsbadandletsitgo.While
chasingtheGhostCoon,Rubingetsinanaccident
anddies.Hisparentsweregoingtohaveafuneral
forhimbutdidn'tinviteanyone.Billysneaksover
tohisgraveandputsflowersonit.
BillyissadbecauseofRubin'sdeath,andfeelsit
washisfault.
TotakeBilly'smindoffthings,GrandpatakesBilly
andPatoacoonhuntingtournament.Inthe
middleofthetournament,astormgoesthrough.
Billy,Pa,Grandpa,OldDan,LittleAnn,andtheir
judgeforthetournamentbarelysurvive,butthey
win!

Annhunting.Theyseeacougar,possiblytheone
OldDanbarkedatasapuppy.Thecougarattacks
savagelyandsodoBilly,OldDan,andLittleAnn.

andcarriesOldDantherestofthewayhome.
Hismothertriestocleanthewound,whichwas
verydeep.OldDandiedthatnight.LittleAnnwas

theporch,whereherandOldDanusedtosnuggle
duringtheday.Rightbeforeshestarved,she

andcries.Aredfern,whichinalegend,isasymbol
ofloveandfriendship,growsbetweentheirgraves.

awaytotownsoBillyandhissisterscangetan
education.
