We have provided the following Quick Play
instructions for those players who want to play
Lights Out now and catch up on instruction details
later. You can use this as a quick reference anytime
you play! Now let’s turn the Lights Out!
Object:
To turn all the lights out on the keypad, but each time
you press a lit or unlit button, it not only changes
that button, but also the adjacent buttons! You must
try to turn the lights out in the minimum number of
moves!
Game:
Lights Out contains three different game play modes,
but for purposes of the Quick Start play, we will
begin with Mode 1, Puzzle 1! Your game contains an
On/Off button, a Start button, a Sound Button, a Help
Button and a Select Button.
How To Play:
Press the “On” Button - This will turn your game on.
You will see a “show of lights” chase around the
board, ending in a cross pattern.
Press the “Start” Button - The first button in the top
row (row 1) will flash and

SOLVING PUZZLE 1:
Step 1: Following the diagram, buttons 11, 13 and 15 are lit.
Press button 16. This shuts off button 11, but turns
on buttons 17 and 21, while buttons 13 and 15
stayed the same.
Step 2: Press button 18. Now buttons 18, 19 and 23 are lit.
Buttons 13 and 17 have turned off and buttons 15,
16 and 21 stayed the same.
Step 3: Press button 20. Now buttons 20 and 25 are lit.
Buttons 15 and 19 have turned off and buttons 16,
18, 21 and 23 remained lit.
Step 4: Press button 21. Now button 22 is lit. Button 16 and
21 shut off, 18, 20, 23 and 25 remained the same.
Step 5: Press button 23. Now buttons 20, 24 and 25 are lit.
Now you have three lights to go!
**Note - you will notice that the buttons are “moving to the
right side of the keypad. This is a good strategy to
follow as you “corner” the lights so they are in a
better position to be shut off!
Step 6: Your final move! Press button 25. Congratulations!
You’ve turned the lights out in only 6 moves! You
should see another “show of lights” chasing around
the display - now you can move onto puzzle 2 in
Mode 1!
As you solved this first puzzle, you can see the
effect the touch of a lit and unlit button has on the
rest of the keypad. Touching a button that is lit will
turn it off. Touching a button that is unlit will turn it
on. But the touch of a button, whether on or off,
also will change the lights directly above, below or
next to the button you press! This is the strategy

you will learn as you try to solve more puzzles in the
minimum number of moves!
HELP:
If you want a hint on the first two moves of a puzzle,
press Help after the game starts, then wait a
moment and watch as the first move will be made
for you. Press it again for the second move.
However, once you’ve pressed a button, this feature
is disabled until you solve the puzzle or re-start!
SELECT:
Selects between Modes 1, 2 and 3. Press it after
you turn on your game to make your selection. You
can also press Select to go back to a previously
solved Puzzle in Modes 1 or 2. Just press Select,
then press the button number you want to solve
again and press Start.
SOUND:
Toggles the sound on or off.
Now that you have solved the first puzzle in Mode 1,
you have a better idea of what it takes to turn the
Lights Out! Remember, there are over a 1,000
different puzzles waiting to challenge you in 3
different game modes, so you’ve only just begun!
Use the rest of the instructions that follow to learn
how to solve harder puzzles in Mode 1, Random
puzzles in Mode 2 and Program your own puzzles in
Mode 3! There are also detailed instructions on how
to use your Help and Select features, so don’t forget
to read on!

I
NTRODUCTION
You are holding in your hands the most addictive,
brain boggling puzzle ever created. The object of the
puzzle is simple...turn the LIGHTS OUT. It seems so
easy...at first. The problem is that every press of a
button has an effect on the puzzle. Lights that are on
will shut off, and “off” lights will turn on. (So, if you
touch a button that is lit, it will shut off. Conversely,
touching an unlit button will cause it to light up).
Moreover, when you touch a button, it not only
changes that light, but it also changes the adjacent
lights (those that are directly above, below, or next to
the pressed button). Every pre-programmed puzzle
has a solution. Your goal is to solve each puzzle in
the fewest number of “moves”, or steps.
The first puzzles are simple, to help you get a feel for
the game, and get the basic “logic” of LIGHTS OUT.
Later puzzles get progressively more challenging,
requiring a little more brain power to solve. Once you
start to solve some of the 50 puzzles in MODE 1, you
can try your hand at MODE 2, which features over
1000 randomly selected puzzles...or for a real mindmelter, take on MODE 3, and create and solve your
own puzzles.
LIGHTS OUT is so addictive, you may not be able to
put it down, but, if you should shut it off for any
reason, the memory function will keep track of your
progress, and let you play from the last puzzle
solved.
What follows is a basic guide to the game and its
functions, and a “walk through” of the first puzzle.
So get to work...its time to turn the LIGHTS OUT!

HE GAME
Before you get started, you may want to become
accustomed to the different buttons and features on
your LIGHTS OUT game.

LIGHTS OUT has 3 different GAME MODES of play.
The goal in all 3 MODES is the same, but each one
provides a different challenge, and beginning players
will probably want to start with MODE 1.
MODE 1- 50 pre-programmed puzzles, each
progressively more difficult.
MODE 2- Over 1000 randomly selected puzzles.
Can you solve them all?
MODE 3- Create your own puzzles, and try them
out on a friend!
ON/OFF: Turns the game ON or OFF. Your LIGHTS
OUT game will shut off automatically after
3 minutes of non-play.
START : a) Starts each game.
b) Confirms a selected puzzle
(MODE 1 and 2).
c) Confirms an input puzzle (MODE 3).
d) Restarts the puzzle (regardless of how
many “moves” have been made).
SELECT: a) Selects between MODES 1, 2, or 3.
b) Exits the current puzzle
(and advances to next mode).
c) Selects a previously solved puzzle
(MODES 1 and 2).
SOUND : Toggles the sound ON and OFF.
HELP : Receive “hints” from the computer
(MODES 1 and 2). The HELP button will
give you the first two moves of a puzzle,
one move with each press. However,
once a player has pressed a button, this
feature is disabled until the puzzle is
solved or re-started.

LAYING THE GAME
PRESS THE "ON" BUTTON to turn on the unit. You
will now see a pattern of lights chasing around the
board. This is followed by the appearance of the
cross pattern.This pattern is a representation of
what would happen if you pressed the center button
while all of the lights were off on the game. As you
can see, the center button is lit, as are the 4
surrounding buttons.
PRESS THE "START" BUTTON If this is your first
time playing LIGHTS OUT, three buttons in row
three will light.... This is Puzzle 1 (Mode 1).
To understand the solution to a puzzle, think of the
LIGHTS OUT puzzle

For Puzzle 1 (Mode 1), you should see button
numbers 11, 13, and 15 lit up on your display.
Since your goal is to shut off the lights in the fewest
moves possible, you will need to decide which buttons to
press. Remember, each button press effects the
surrounding buttons, so plan your moves carefully.
For example, if button 12 is pressed, the lights on
buttons 11 and 13 will be shut off, but now buttons 7,
12, and 17 will be turned on. Follow the illustrations
on the next page, and try it out on the actual game to
understand how to recognize certain patterns.

OLVING PUZZLE 1
Follow the steps below to solve this puzzle in 6 steps
- the minimum number of moves!
STEP 1 When you start, buttons 11, 13, and 15 will be lit.
Press button 16.
Pressing button 16 caused button 11 to shut off,
and the lights next to and below it, 17 and 21, to
turn on. Buttons 13 and 15 stayed the same.
STEP 2 Button 11 is now off, but 13, 15, 16 , 17 and 21
are lit.
Press button 18.
Buttons 18, 19 and 23 are will turn on. Buttons 13
and 17 will turn off and buttons 15, 16 and 21 stay
the same.
STEP 3 Buttons 15, 16, 18, 19, 21 and 23 are lit.
Press button 20.
Now buttons 15 & 19 have shut off. Buttons 20 and
25 are now lit, and button 16, 18, 21 and 23
remained the same.
STEP 4 Press button 21.
Now button 22 is lit. Button 16 and 21 shut off,
and button 18, 20, 23 and 25 remained the same.
You notice that there is a general "movement" of
buttons to the right side of the game board. This is
a good strategy to follow - to "corner" the lights so
they are in a better position to be shut off.
STEP 5 Press button 23.
Now buttons 20, 24 and 25 are lit. Now you have
three lights to go.
STEP 6 This is your final move. The only lights on the
board are 20, 24 and 25.
Press button 25.
All the lights have gone out and you have turned
the Lights Out in the minimum number of moves!
You should see a "victory" pattern of lights chasing
around the entire display - Now you can move on
to puzzle 2!

After a puzzle has been solved in MODE 1, you can
try to improve your solution by accessing that puzzle
again in MODE 1 by using the SELECT button. Simply
press SELECT at any time during a puzzle (this turns
all the lights out), then press the button number of
the puzzle you want to choose, followed by the
START button.
Note - You cannot select a puzzle number higher
than the last puzzle you were working on. For
example, if the last puzzle you complete is number
12 in MODE 1, you cannot select puzzle 14 until
you solve 13 first!
Remember, if necessary, you can always shut off the
game and it will return you to the beginning of the
last puzzle you were working on when you’re ready
to play again! Your Lights Out game will shut-off
automatically after 3 minutes of non-play.

HE HELP FEATURE
If you seem to be stuck on a puzzle, this is a good
way to get you back on the right track. The Help
feature can be used in MODES 1 and 2 on puzzles
requiring 10 moves or less (in MODE 1, these are
puzzles 1-25). When you start a puzzle, you can
either jump right in, or press the HELP button for
advice. The computer will show you the best
possible move to make, and then automatically
make that move for you. Press it again to see the
most logical second step. The computer will only
show you the first two moves, and then you’ll need
to proceed on you’re own. Remember, this help

feature can only be used at the beginning of a
puzzle, and can’t be used at all in the more
advanced (11 steps or higher) puzzles!

HE SAVE FEATURE
As we mentioned, you can shut off the game and
return to the “current” puzzle at any point. There
are a few exceptions, however. This save feature will
not work in MODE 3 with the player-created puzzles,
and the game will be re-set when the batteries are
removed for replacement.

ELECTING PUZZLE MODES
Now that you have solved Puzzle 1 in Mode 1, it is
time to learn how to access each of the three
different Puzzle Modes in Lights Out.
MODE 1
After turning Lights Out on, pressing the start
button automatically defaults you to the last puzzle
you tried to solve in Mode 1.
Mode 1 enables you to solve 50 pre-programmed
puzzles, each one more difficult from the last.
Solving a beginning puzzle can be as few as 6 steps,
while the more advanced puzzles could require up to
15 steps! For the first 25 pre-programmed puzzles,
only one blinking light will appear. (Refer to diagram
on the next page)

Similar to the method for the first 25 puzzles, you
can tell how many moves are required for the more
advanced puzzles 26-50.

REMEMBER
The challenge of Lights Out is to solve a puzzle in
the minimum number of moves required. When
you solve a puzzle in the minimum number of
moves, you will be rewarded with a blinking light
show chasing around the entire display. Lights Out
will then automatically display the next puzzle! If you
go over the minimum number of moves, the number
of moves you exceed by will flash on your display,
but you can still proceed to the next puzzle as long
as you do not exceed 10 moves! For example,
solving a 6 step puzzle in 8 steps will display two
blinking lights! If you solve a puzzle in more than 10
steps over the minimum number of moves, a lighted
“X” will appear on screen and you will have to try
again before advancing to the next puzzle!
MODE 2
MODE 2 is similar to MODE 1, except that all the
puzzles are randomly generated by the computer.
You will be able to tell how many moves are required
to solve a puzzle right before the puzzle appears as
you did in MODE 1 (see previous charts).
NOTE: when you access MODE 2, the default
game, or first game in MODE 2, will be the same
puzzle level you achieved in MODE 1. So, if the
last puzzle you are working on in MODE 1 is an
eight step puzzle, you will start off with eight step
puzzles in MODE 2.
In Mode 2, you can go back to any puzzle level up to
the last puzzle level you achieved in Mode 1, by

simply pressing the select button at any time, then
pressing the button number of the puzzle you want
to choose, followed by the start button.
MODE 3
You could call this “Lights In”, since you are now
given the chance to input your own puzzles to
challenge yourself and your friends! Of course, you
have to figure out how to solve them too, so don’t
try to get too tricky! When you select MODE 3 with
the SELECT button and push "Start", you are able to
press as many of the buttons on the keypad as you
like. Each time a button is pressed once, it will light
up. When you have finished creating, press start
again to begin your puzzle.
Note: it is possible to create a puzzle that is so
difficult, it may not have an answer! That is why
we have provided 1,000 puzzles for you to
program and try to solve. The following pages
will list these puzzles by the minimum number of
moves it takes to solve them, starting with 6 step
puzzles. Simply push the buttons listed for each
puzzle and then press the Start button to
challenge yourself and your friends!

NSERTING THE BATTERIES
To insert the batteries, have an adult open the battery
compartment cover at the back of the game. (To remove
cover, push in direction of the arrow.) Insert three "AA"
batteries, UM-3, LR6 or equivalent (not included), making
sure to align "+" and "-" as shown. To ensure proper
function, do not mix alkaline batteries with standard
batteries or rechargeable batteries.
Do not mix old and new batteries.
Do not use rechargeable batteries.
Replace with new batteries at
the first sign of erratic
operation.
Remember, your game will
reset to the first puzzle level
(Modes 1 and 2) once you're
replaced or removed the

90 DAY LIMITED WARRANTY
Tiger Electronic Toys warrants to the original consumer purchaser of any
Lights Out that the product will be free of defects in material or workmanship

3) Put parcel post stamps on the package; insure the package, then mail.
After the 90-day warranty period and up to one year from the date of purchase,
do all of the above PLUS enclose your check or money order for US$12.50
payment for the repair service.
