Maths Days for Nursery - Reception
The Giant Water Problem
Its big, its full of water, and somehow it found its way onto the carpet of your
classroom. Do we ignore it, or do we turn it into an investigation? We’re five and
under, of course we investigate, that’s our job.
Using skilled foundation stage practitioners, MakeBelieve Arts presents the class
with a giant water problem and facilitates their enquiry, probing children to ask
questions and work mathematically in an investigation that really gets them
thinking.
“It was fab – the children loved it! They would like more lessons like this where they
get to be hands on. Great for Early Years”
Teacher, Berkshire
“The Nursery children really enjoyed the session. The story telling was pitched well,
with the right amount of activity and call/response. It was interesting for us as
practitioners to see how the children tackled the problems both physically and
through talking to each other.”
Nursery Teacher, Southwark
The Giant Footprint Problem
A storm, a loud crashing sound, followed by an unexplainable screech that wakes
everyone from their sleep. Sheltered in their houses people quiver, waiting till
morning to discover the cause of the bumps in the night.
And then they find the answer, and wished they’d never asked.
A footprint, larger than your average footprint, a footprint so large it couldn’t
belong to anyone of human kind. This is a giant footprint and it brings with it a
giant problem, a maths problem, a problem the children need to help the
townspeople solve. How tall is the owner? How wide are its toes? How can we
possible catch the giant? And are we safe?
The Missing Number Problem
When all the numbers get blown away in a terrible storm no one remembers them
but they soon realise that their lives are suddenly more difficult.
How can they tell how old they are or which house their friend lives at, or what bus
they should get on to find their way home?
In a jumble of number chaos the townspeople invent their own number system,
wriggling their bodies and making sounds, until they eventually realise how
valuable their number friends are and wish them home.
