Cameron Dollar, one of the most exciting young coaches
in the nation, is leading the SU men’s basketball team’s
return to Division I. He brings an impressive list of
accomplishments as both a player and coach, including a
national championship while playing for the UCLA Bruins.
Dollar’s basketball roots go back to his childhood in
Atlanta, where he was inspired to be a coach by watching
his father, Donald, lead the Clarkston High School
basketball team. Says Seattle Times columnist Steve Kelley: “He has spent a lifetime preparing for this role, and he is
absolutely ready to lead Seattle U back to the big time.”
Dollar, 33, was a four-year letterman at UCLA from 199497, experiencing national-level pressure – and victory
– in the Bruin’s 1995 run to the national title. With time
running out in a second-round game against Missouri,
Dollar famously threw an inbound pass to Tyus Edney for
a buzzer-beating bank shot and victory. Dollar went on to
On the Rise
replace an injured Edney for UCLA’s championship win in
Seattle’s Kingdome.
Dollar was easily lured into coaching by UC-Irvine, in spite
of tryouts lined up with seven NBA teams. A year later,
he was at the helm of Southern California College, now
Vanguard University, in Costa Mesa, Calif. At 22, he was
the youngest college coach in the nation.
Dollar went on to Saint Louis University, then the
University of Washington. There he helped recruit several
classes ranked among the best in the nation while taking
the team to several NCAA tournament appearances and its
first sole PAC-10 championship title since 1953.
Dollar has already started bolstering the talent at Seattle
U. Among his recruits: Assistant Coach Donald Cameron,
giving Seattle U an extra 46 years of coaching experience
and one of the few father-son combinations in the
country.
