June 2012
Dear Parents and Students.
Welcome to the 6th grade!!! We are looking forward to having a great year. The
following information contains the requirements for the 2012-2013 summer reading
for sixth grade:
Required Reading:
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
A test will be given on the above books shortly after school begins. Each student
must have their own copy of the book in order to take the test. This test will be
counted as a major grade for the first trimester.
Required Reading and Project:
The Egypt Game – Zilpha Keatley Snyder ©1995 ©2009 A group of children,
entranced with the study of Egypt, play their own Egypt game, are visited by a
secret oracle, become involved in a murder, and befriend the Professor before
they move on to new interests, such as Gypsies. Newbery Honor Book
Pyramids of Egypt – Cynthia Kennedy Henzel ©2011 Introduces the
pyramids of Egypt, describes how they were built, and discusses the
importance of their preservation.
Please make a poster board comparing the two books based on Egypt. Keep in
mind that one is fiction and one is non-fiction. Does that play a part in how
much you enjoyed the book? Come up with a CREATIVE way to compare the two
books illustration what you may have learned, what you like/didn’t like,
important information, and anything you think is important. We will be grading
you on creativity, accuracy to the book, the amount of information, effort, and
grammar/mechanics. This will count as a major grade so please give it your best
effort.
We hope that you enjoy the books we have chosen for you with summer and we look
forward to hearing your opinions on the books in the fall. Have a fun and safe
summer!
Sincerely,
Miss Quinn and Mr. O’Connell
