Reverend’s Corner
We all have and will ask – where is God? Where is God in this
world crises? Where is God in my world – that I have to go
through this pain and sense of loss? Yes, real questions and
perfectly ok to be asking as we are not equipped with all of God’s
wisdom which leaves us to question and to doubt at times.
We talked about ‘Doubting Thomas’ a few weeks ago where I
shared the affirmation that to doubt and question was not only
ok, but healthy. Healthy as long as we do not hide and pent up
our sense of doubt but rather we get out and seek information or
answers to our questions.
Rowan Williams, the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, spiritual
leader of the world’s 100 million Anglicans in his work titled,
“Tokens of Trust” speaks to the fact that God created however
we still face the presence of Evil in our journey. If God is the heart
of everything what does that imply about suffering, sickness and
disaster. Rowan Williams states early on “we are not going to
have an answer to this that allows us to sit back and stop
worrying. No one is dispensable, no one’s suffering is
insignificant. Would a world with a perpetual safety net
really be a world at all? Is God to make it impossible for
people to live in such places? Or should He step in with a
warning or a miracle when it becomes too dangerous?”
Creation was a sort of climax having made us in His image and
made us capable of choice and love. We have risks and threats
and many are aligned to the freedom of human choices which can
be stupid or even hostile to God and others.
Job gives us one of the greatest of faith testaments, “If he kills
me, I shall still trust him” (Job 13:15)
So why does it appear that God intervenes there and not here?
Some prayers apparently answered and some not? Remembering
our faith statement that God is ever present and always at work in
our lives.
Are we looking for biblical miracles as evidence of God’s presence?
St. Augustine’s view was miracles were more aligned to natural
3
processes speeded up ‘fast forwarded’ as it may well be God’s
presence working with us aligning to His final purpose.
Rowan Williams leaves us with the following; “All we know is
that we are called to pray, to trust and to live with
integrity before God (to live ‘holy’ lives) in such a way as
to leave the door open, to let things come together so that
love can come through.”
