Ebola. It’s a name that has
aghast the world with its meaning. Ebola is a virus infection
that is systemic, meaning that
it attacks every organ and tissue in the body except the
bones and skeletal muscles,
according to
www.brighthub.com. Ebola, in
my words, is a virus that eats
up every organ and tissue in
the subject’s body except for
the skeletal portion. “The tissue is basically digested by the
virus. The Ebola virus attacks
connective tissue multiplying
rapidly in the Collagen. Collagen is the tissue that helps
keep organs in place. The virus
causes small blood clots to
form in blood stream of the
subject; the blood thickens and
the blood flow slows down.
Also, blood clots do not allow
proper blood supply to the liver,
brain, intestines, etc.” The
Ebola virus multiplies rapidly so
the more time you have Ebola
the harder it is to fight it which
leads to a decrease in survival
rates.

Ebola also causes spontaneous
bleeding. Death is mostly
caused by blood loss, renal
failure or shock. The Ebola
virus is a serious illness which
is often fatal if left untreated.

caused by an infection with one
of the Ebola strains,” according
to cdc.gov. Ebola is also a disease that can affect not just
humans but non-human primates like monkeys, gorillas
and chimpanzees. I know
you’re asking, “Where does it
come from? Where did it
start?” It first appeared in
1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks, one in Nzara, Sudan
and another in Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo. The
latter occurred in a village near
the Ebola river where the virus
takes its name based on
www.nbcnews.com. The natural origin of the Ebola virus is
still unknown but researchers
suspect that the virus is animal
borne and believe bats are the
origin. Researchers tested
more than 1,000 animals in
the central African nations of
Gabon and the Republic of
Congo. The scientists tested
679 bats, 222 birds and 129
small vertebrates. “At least
two types of fruit bats live near
where the outbreak occurred
and possibly began. If bats are
the source of the virus, one way
people might become infected
is by handling bats that are
eaten for food.” Unfortunately,
bat soup is a delicacy in the
region. The officials of Guinea
banned the consumption of
and sale of bats during March.
Ebola has already killed thousands of people across Liberia.
The three worst affected countries so far are Liberia, Guinea
and Sierra Leone. It is estimated that 17,000 people have
Ebola in total. On average, fatality rates have gone from
25% to 90% in past outbreaks.
Volume 2, Issue 7
Three people have been infected in the United States at the
time of this article. One was a
passenger who traveled to the
U.S. from Africa. He passed
away. The other two are female nurses who took care of
the first patient in the United
States. The two nurses recovered due to experimental
drugs. There is yet no licensed
treatment to neutralize the
virus but a range of blood immunological and drug therapies
are under development. But
there have been some drugs
tested in Africa and people
have shown improvement. This
gives us hope for a cure.
Ebola is also highly dangerous,
as you know, mostly because
it’s undetectable; it has a 21day incubation period. The
virus is also greatly contagious.
You can be infected by “contact
with body fluids of who is infected and symptomatic.” The
bright side is that the virus is
only contagious when people
have symptoms. What are the
symptoms? You have a sudden increase in temperature,
strong headaches, joint and
muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain and internal
and external bleeding. You can
also bleed trough your eyes,
tongue and nose. The United
States citizens are frustrated
and fearful. President Obama
recently called on Congress to
approve additional funding to
carry on these critical efforts to
stop the virus. Even though
Ebola has killed approximately
6,000 people, we hope to attain a cure soon.

Pearl Harbor
Take a look at any calendar and you will notice that December 7th
is Pearl Harbor Day.
Why is Pearl Harbor
Day important? It is important because it was
when the United States
went to war with Japan.
When and where did
this happen? It was on
December 7, 1941 at
Hawaii. The attack was
a surprise military
strike ordered by the
Japanese navy, against

the United States. The
base was attacked by
353 Japanese fighter
planes, bombers, and
torpedo planes in two
waves, launched from
six aircraft carriers.
They damaged three of
our cruisers. There
were 2,403 Americans
killed. Since the Japanese did that it led the
U.S. into World War II.
Japan attacked us because they wanted to
take over the entire pacific including all the
islands, which included
Hawaii.
The U.S. eventually defeated Japan but we
still remember the day
when so many service
members lost their
lives. It is important to
honor Soldiers and veterans on this day.

Let’s Go “SHOP”
Why should shop class
return? That’s the question. Way back when shop
class used to be offered,
it wasn’t the most popular. But what about now?
Most of you may say,
“Only boys want shop
class.” Then I’ll ask,
“Have you asked all the
girls?” If you say you
have and all the girls in
the school said no, they
don’t want shop class,
then you win. But I’m
pretty sure you haven’t so
I will state my reasons
why shop class should
come back.

here either has or still
plays with them. I know I
played with them. But not
anymore. I want to make
something from wood or

Finally, if you think kids
don’t like shop because
it’s boring to build something simple like a bird
house, then you should
look at what they’re doing

What’s For Dinner?
Imagine a scenario where
you are living alone and
you’re hungry but you don’t
know how to cook. If you
have no time on your hands,
you would probably get fast
food or eat ramen noodles.
Often, people don’t have time
to take cooking classes over
the weekend. What if you
could learn how to prepare
food in middle school or high
school? These classes could
really help you in later life.
Give your parents a break
from cooking and do it yourself once in a while. You do
some cooking in home economics class, but you should
really start practicing at
home. I asked an eighth
grader, Alyssa, if she agrees
with me. She responded,
“Yes, absolutely. As we become older, we shouldn’t
expect our parents to cook

for us every day. Without the
knowledge of preparing
meals, fast food, restaurants,
and ramen noodles are our
only choice.” Food can be
hard to prepare at first, so
start with easy recipes then
advance to the harder ones.
A good recipe to start with is
Mac and Cheese:
Ingredients:
8 ounces uncooked elbow
macaroni
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup bread crumbs
1 pinch paprika
Directions:
Cook macaroni according to the package directions. Drain.
In a saucepan, melt butter or margarine over medium heat. Stir in
enough flour to make a roux. Add milk to roux slowly, stirring constantly. Stir in cheeses, and cook over low heat until cheese is
melted and the sauce is a little thick. Put macaroni in large casserole dish, and pour sauce over macaroni. Stir well.
2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
Melt butter or margarine in a skillet over medium heat. Add breadcrumbs and brown. Spread over the macaroni and cheese to cover. Sprinkle with a little paprika.
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
cheese
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 minutes. Serve.
Recipe is from http://allrecipes.com
3 cups milk
1/4 cup butter
2 1/2 tablespoons allpurpose flour
In conclusion, all students should take a cooking class in middle
school and high school. It will help now and in later life. We all
need to eat, so why not learn how to cook for yourself while you are
young.
