EX: At the risk of being presumptuous, let me give you some advice. Mark Your Calendar December 9th– Advanced Band concert. December 10th– Girls Basketball vs. JONES Ebola. It’s a name that has aghast the world with its meaning. Ebola is a virus infection that is systemic, meaning that it attacks every organ and tissue in the body except the bones and skeletal muscles, according to www.brighthub.com. Ebola, in my words, is a virus that eats up every organ and tissue in the subject’s body except for the skeletal portion. “The tissue is basically digested by the virus. The Ebola virus attacks connective tissue multiplying rapidly in the Collagen. Collagen is the tissue that helps keep organs in place. The virus causes small blood clots to form in blood stream of the subject; the blood thickens and the blood flow slows down. Also, blood clots do not allow proper blood supply to the liver, brain, intestines, etc.” The Ebola virus multiplies rapidly so the more time you have Ebola the harder it is to fight it which leads to a decrease in survival rates. December 11thBoys Basketball vs. JONES December 12th– CHIOR CONCERT @ HOLMES The Ebola virus under a microscope. Ebola also causes spontaneous bleeding. Death is mostly caused by blood loss, renal failure or shock. The Ebola virus is a serious illness which is often fatal if left untreated. “Ebola, previously known as Ebola Hemorrhagic fever, is a rare and deadly disease By: Ailady caused by an infection with one of the Ebola strains,” according to cdc.gov. Ebola is also a disease that can affect not just humans but non-human primates like monkeys, gorillas and chimpanzees. I know you’re asking, “Where does it come from? Where did it start?” It first appeared in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks, one in Nzara, Sudan and another in Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo. The latter occurred in a village near the Ebola river where the virus takes its name based on www.nbcnews.com. The natural origin of the Ebola virus is still unknown but researchers suspect that the virus is animal borne and believe bats are the origin. Researchers tested more than 1,000 animals in the central African nations of Gabon and the Republic of Congo. The scientists tested 679 bats, 222 birds and 129 small vertebrates. “At least two types of fruit bats live near where the outbreak occurred and possibly began. If bats are the source of the virus, one way people might become infected is by handling bats that are eaten for food.” Unfortunately, bat soup is a delicacy in the region. The officials of Guinea banned the consumption of and sale of bats during March. Ebola has already killed thousands of people across Liberia. The three worst affected countries so far are Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. It is estimated that 17,000 people have Ebola in total. On average, fatality rates have gone from 25% to 90% in past outbreaks. Volume 2, Issue 7 Three people have been infected in the United States at the time of this article. One was a passenger who traveled to the U.S. from Africa. He passed away. The other two are female nurses who took care of the first patient in the United States. The two nurses recovered due to experimental drugs. There is yet no licensed treatment to neutralize the virus but a range of blood immunological and drug therapies are under development. But there have been some drugs tested in Africa and people have shown improvement. This gives us hope for a cure. Ebola is also highly dangerous, as you know, mostly because it’s undetectable; it has a 21day incubation period. The virus is also greatly contagious. You can be infected by “contact with body fluids of who is infected and symptomatic.” The bright side is that the virus is only contagious when people have symptoms. What are the symptoms? You have a sudden increase in temperature, strong headaches, joint and muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain and internal and external bleeding. You can also bleed trough your eyes, tongue and nose. The United States citizens are frustrated and fearful. President Obama recently called on Congress to approve additional funding to carry on these critical efforts to stop the virus. Even though Ebola has killed approximately 6,000 people, we hope to attain a cure soon.
