Shepherd Elementary School The Eagle’s Scream Volume 3, Edition 3 Adlai Stevenson - December 2, 2010 “The first principle of a free society is an untrammeled flow of words in an open forum.” Inside Today’s Paper A Third-Grade Tale A Third-Grade Tail Mrs. Griggs, EC Percy and the Battle Shepherd’s Christmas Express The Story Teller Fifth-Grade Progress Calendar updates My name is Ellie B. I am in Mrs. Russ’s ThirdGrade class. In Mrs. Russ’s room, we use strategies so we can do a good job. She wants us to understand each topic. In Math, we always check to back up our subtraction problems, and we draw out our multiplication problems. If we do not understand something, she helps us. She wants us to show how we find the answer to the problem, so she knows that we understand. Mrs. Russ is very creative. She always has fun activities for us to do. Right now our class is reading a book together called Ramona Quimby, Age Eight. We do worksheets with games for homework. In the book, Ramona starts Third Grade. Her sister, Beatrice, is beginning Junior High School. Ramona’s old school has become an Intermediate School. She has to go to a new Elementary School. Her former friends still ride her bus. A boy named Danny takes her eraser. At school, he starts a hard boiled egg fad. Classmates bring boiled eggs and crack them on other students’ heads. Ramona got in trouble for doing that, and her teacher called her a “showoff”. Her high hopes for Third Grade started to go down after that. At home, Ramona’s Lake Norman Elementary she told me she would go to while. We need two fulltime schools. When the kids un- the beach. Any sandy beach EC teachers. Percy and the Battle The Battle of the Labyrinth is about a halfblood named Percy Jackson, who is Poseidon’s son. Shepherd’s Christmas Express Christmas is right around the corner and all the kids here at school are excited. We have many activities planned for the holiday. There will be parties and special events. We are looking forward to vacation time at home. This is the time of year when we eat a lot of food and get many gifts. One activity we have at Shepherd is the Christmas Express. This is where we can buy special items and sit on Santa’s lap—if we want to. The activity is held in the library. We can also go to our classrooms and make arts and crafts. A lot of kids come to this activity because it is more fun for the young kids. The Christmas express has been at Shepherd since I was in kindergarten. I don’t know if or how long it was here before that. I think the coolest part of the Express is when you get to take a picture with Santa. You can buy popcorn and soda while you are there. The staff and PTO decorate the library with fake snow and a Christmas tree. If you are a new student, the Christmas Express will help you to get to know some people your own age. The event also provides funds for the needs of the school. In the past few years, PTO has raised lots of money. We are thankful to have this special celebration because it provides fun for the students. Thanks to everyone who makes our Christmas happier. By Wesley S. & Brett B. think the story is going to end, you are only halfway through the narrative. When Mrs. Davis is telling a story, she never messes up a single word. And she never reads the story from a piece of paper. She recalls the words by heart, and I don’t remember her ever stopping a story because she couldn’t keep in mind all the events. I’ll bet Mrs. Davis has a thousand scary stories. There is one about a train wreck that happened in August of 1891. It took place here in North Carolina. Mrs. Davis told us a new story this year. She called it “Ross and Anna”. It was really good. In fact, it is my secondfavorite story that she told us. My favorite story is called “Taily Bones”. I wish that I could be at Shepherd next year so she could tell me some more tales. Mrs. Davis is a great story teller. By Cassie K. The Story Teller A great story teller named Mrs. Davis comes to Shepherd School every year to tell us scary stories. She was here again in early November. All the students love her visits with us and the many stories she tells. Mrs. Davis has some amazing tales, most of which were passed down from her grandmother over the years. Mrs. Davis can turn a boring story into an awesome one. She knows when to add a scream or a screech. The tone of her voice is always just right, and that makes the stories even better. For the most part, the stories deal with ghosts. You are always wondering about what is going to happen next. Right when you First-Grade Progress Shepherd’s First Upcoming Dates: room.
