VISALIA RESCUE MISSION FOOD SERVICES DEPARTMENT Job title Cook (Food Service Department) Status Part-time (hourly - 20-28 hours) Reports to Food Services Manager Compensation Commensurate based on experience COOK DESCRIPTION The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Summary To assist in meal planning, preparation, and service. The Food Services Cook will connect daily with the Kitchen Supervisor and/or Food Services Director to be proactive in food safety principles and daily cleaning of the facility. Performs a wide range of duties involved with preparing and/or serving foods and beverages in one or more of a variety of food service environments. May perform such duties as preparing salad items, hot foods, and/or cold foods, and/or assisting in the preparation of bakery items, as appropriate to the position. Assist in cleaning work areas, equipment, utensils. May assist in the set up, and service; and collection of garbage/trash; as appropriate to the area of operation. May serve food to guests, residents, and/or staff. Performs other assigned duties, as appropriate. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Sets up food service, kitchen, or salad area facilities, equipment and utensils, under detailed instruction, in accordance with specific area needs; checks food temperatures and/or prepares areas for daily operations; may operate cooking or bakery equipment as assigned. 2. Conveys food and supplies from the main kitchen, and/or preparation area to the serving site either by carrying or by utilizing a cart. 1 VISALIA RESCUE MISSION FOOD SERVICES DEPARTMENT COOK DESCRIPTION 3. Follows prescribed procedures in setting up hot and cold food lines; chooses proper utensils and sets steam line to appropriate temperature for menu items. 4. Prepares or assists in the preparation of hot and cold meat and vegetable dishes, beverages, salads, sandwiches, pie fillings, simple bakery items, salad dressings, and/or other similar food items, as appropriate to the position. 5. As appropriate to the position, serves food items to guests from counters and/or steam tables, in accordance with specific instructions, ensuring that appropriate portions are served. 6. As needed, replenishes foods, silverware, glassware, dishes, and trays at serving stations. 7. Ensures that machines and equipment are cleaned and maintained, as necessary. 8. Attends to day-to-day problems and needs concerning equipment and food supplies; detects and ensures disposition of spoiled or unattractive food, defective supplies/ equipment, and/or other unusual conditions. 9. May clean and maintain work areas, including floors, facilities, utensils, and equipment; collects and places garbage and trash in designated containers; as appropriate to the area of operation. 10. Washes pots, pans, and other serviceware ensuring sanitary handling; organizes and replaces serviceware to appropriate location. 11. Cleans and maintains dining area and facilities throughout shift. 12. May provide guidance and training to other employees performing related work. 13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. 14. Effectively correspond via email, text, and written reporting 15. Plan meals on a weekly basis based on donations 16. Observe and comply with food safety standards and rotation 17. Observe and practice “First in-First out” rules of meal planning 18. Assist volunteers and guests in a professional manner and with a servants attitude 19. Assist program residents by complying with all schedules and job duties as an example with understanding that we are here to help them in preparing them for jobs in their new lives in recovery and in Christ 20. Be flexible with schedule and hours concerning holidays, weekends, etc. Minimum Job Requirements • • • A servant’s heart An understanding of large meal preparation An understanding of food preparation, storage and state, local and federal laws 2 VISALIA RESCUE MISSION • • • FOOD SERVICES DEPARTMENT COOK DESCRIPTION Food preparation experience A believer of Jesus Christ and actively involved in church A desire to minister and assist in the success of men in recovery Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions. • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures. • Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies. • Ability to lead and train staff and/or residents. • Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects. • Knowledge of food service lines set-up and temperature requirements. • Skill in cooking and preparing a variety of foods. • Knowledge of food preparation and presentation methods, techniques, and quality standards. Conditions of Employment • Successful candidate must submit to drug screen and background check. Working Conditions and Physical Effort • Considerable physical activity. May require handling of objects that can weigh up to and exceeding 50 lbs. • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, such as slippery surfaces, sharp cutting tools and equipment and hot surfaces and liquids, which require following basic safety precautions.
