INTRODUCTION
Mareeba Shire War Memorial
Heritage Asset List 2015
The purpose of this document is to catalogue and report on the condition of all known war memorial sites in the Mareeba Shire.
This report and its recommendations will inform future restoration and conservation of these
heritage assets.
‘Memorials’ in this document are regarded as:
• cenotaphs and statues
• honour boards
• plaques
• buildings
• signs
Memorials from the First World War through to Vietnam are included with their locations and GPS coordinates (where known).
Current photographs have been used where possible—older images have been used where access to memorials is difficult or not
possible. The photographs identify any aesthetic/construction issues for auditing purposes.
During the development of this report, the Mareeba cenotaph underwent some renovation prior to the 2015 Anzac Day
celebrations, and a new cenotaph at Mt Molloy was completed.
Traditionally, ‘honour rolls’ provide details of members of the Australian armed forces who died while on active service. However,
many of the honour rolls/boards in the Mareeba Shire show not only those who died in service, but those who were injured, as
well as all personnel who served - so that is an inconsistency.
The wording on each memorial has been transcribed in full within this document (except for some parts of the Chillagoe
memorial). All First World War names have been cross-checked against the First World War nominal roll for the shire that has been
compiled by the Mareeba Heritage Centre (Jackie Morris and Col Cater). Please note that only the First World War nominal roll
names have been fully checked in this manner. Where anomalies with names have been identified, they have been noted beside
the name listed (in this document) in red italics. What has become obvious through this process, is that there are quite a few
errors on many memorials such as incorrect names, or spelling of names, or use of nicknames.
There are many instances where the same soldier is listed on multiple memorials - for the full and correct First World War nominal
roll, please consult with the Mareeba Heritage Centre. They have also noted all the different and multiple honour boards/plaques
soldiers may feature on.
All information collected has been done with the resources currently available, including input from individuals who have specific
knowledge of the memorials. Every care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of the information provided, however if there are
any errors they can be noted for any future updates.

Mareeba Cenotaph
Location:
Byrnes Street, Mareeba
16°59’35”S | 145°25’21”E
First World War
Second World War
Vietnam War
When built:1923
Construction:
Concrete and marble pillar with soldier statue on top. Marble
plaques on three sides (East, North, South) which are inscribed
with inlaid lead. The statue of the soldier is facing to the East
and considered to be the front of the cenotaph.
Condition (as of February 2015):
The pillar and soldier needs cleaning/painting, there is evidence
of black marker pen written over the soldiers names, and the
base of ceramic tiles is badly cracked.
Note: in April 2015, the cenotaph underwent renovation. The
tiles at the base were replaced, the inlaid lead inscriptions were
repaired, and the monument was cleaned.
Comments:
The cenotaph was built through the fundraising work of the
Soldier’s Memorial Committee, and constructed by Melrose and
Fenwick. It was unveiled on Anzac Day in 1923. This cenotaph
has been moved a number of times
1. Originally in the middle of the intersection of Byrnes and
Atherton Streets.
2. Moved to Arnold Park on Walsh Street in 1990s.
3. Current location at Anzac Park, Byrnes Street in 2000.

War ll after the tragic death of Major Dean C Hoevet.
HOEVET, born at Fairfield, Nebraska USA on 1st April 1911,
graduated from Kelly Field, and flew at Randolf Field in 1937.
HOEVET was a career army man and trained in heavy bombers,
then moved to Corregidor with the 19th Bombardment Group.
Early in the summer of 1942 the Mareeba Airstrip was ready and
Major Hoevet was commanding in the 19th Bombardment Group,
30th Bombardment Squadron. From this airfield Hoevet led many
strategic and planned missions on the enemy in Rabaul and was
posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

The aircraft began its take off late along the airstrip, full power was applied, causing the plane to lift off but due to the overload cargo
and lack of power the aircraft flew for approx. ½ a mile off the end of the airstrip crashing into a thick woodland causing it to explode on
impact, tragically killing all aboard.

This was the original Mt Molloy Honour Board. It has been
noted that in the 1920 cyclone, the town hall was destroyed
and the Honour Roll went into the Mitchell River—it floated
along until someone pulled it out near Ord’s Crossing (as told
by Bunny Sides to the Mareeba Historical Society). This story
has been disputed by some Mt Molloy locals.

Cenotaph
Location: Town Hall
10-12 Queen Street, Chillagoe
17°9’12”S | 144°31’19”E
First World War
Second World War
Korea
Vietnam
When built:
2000 - 2015
Construction:
Located beside the Chillagoe Town Hall this memorial is a
marble pillar with three metal plaques attached listing soldiers'
names, number, and unit. On top of the pillar is a lead statue of
a soldier in uniform holding a rifle.
To the side of the pillar is a German gun mounted on a raised
step of blue tiles.
Condition (as of February 2015): Excellent condition.
Comments:
Erected by volunteers. Construction commenced in 2000 with a
marble slab donated by Cairns Marble. Funds were raised by
the Community Church for the first plaque.
In 2002, Sylvia Coburn successfully applied for a grant to install
a statue of a soldier on top of the cenotaph. The sculpture is
from a photograph of soldier Ferdinand Ahlers, from Maytown,
and completed by a sculptor in Acacia Ridge.
In 2006, the Chillagoe community raised $3,000 and the RSL
donated $1,000 towards the three new plaques. $5,000 was
provided by council for the tiles around the memorial, which
was completed January 2015.
The German gun at the base of the cenotaph was sent to
Chillagoe around 1922 as a war trophy. No records can be
found to ascertain any details on its arrival. It is a German
7.58 cm Leichte minenwerfer (trench mortar) similar to that at
the Loudon House Museum in Irvinebank and Herberton.
One of about 16 Australia wide.
The cenotaph also includes names of all the locals who were
part of the Second World War Militia (civilian army).
Photos by: Sue Colman
Inscription: by Sue Colman
NOTE: Only the names on the cenotaph are listed here, not the
service number or unit details. For these details please contact
Sue Colman or the Chillagoe Historical Society.

Mareeba
There are 93 WW2 site markers around the Atherton Tablelands—with the majority in Ravenshoe, Wondecla, Tinaroo, Kairi, and
Tolga. These markers are all brown, engraved timber signs attached to steel posts. In the Mareeba Shire, there are five of these
markers - one in Mareeba and four in Kuranda.
In 2012, the Tablelands Branch of the National Servicemen’s Association undertook the refurbishment of these signs. A
Department of Veterans’ Affairs - “Saluting their Service” Commemoration Grant was approved and allowed for all signs to be
replaced. The Carpenters Shop at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre was enlisted to engrave and paint the markers. These markers
are in good condition. Contact John Hardy (p. 0408 939 910) for the full Atherton Tablelands list of markers.
There are also a number of Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) WW2 markers within Mareeba. Many of these are in poor condition.
They are pale yellow timber posts with sign writing along the length of the post. It is unknown how many are in still in existence council records should show how many were erected and where. This report only contains three that were easily located.
