ASSIGNMENT BOOKLET Assignment for Courses 1,2,3,4 and 5 ASSIGNMENT 2010-11 (For July 2010 and January 2011 sessions) Diploma in Creative Writing in English Dear Students, We hope you are already familiar with the system of evaluation to be followed for the Diploma in Creative Writing in English. At this stage you should read again the pages of the Programme Guide that give the details of the evaluation procedure. A weightage of 30 per cent, as you are aware, has been earmarked for Continuous Evaluation, which would consist of one assignment per Course. The Assignment booklet for Courses 1,2,3,4 and 5 is being sent herewith. It has a total of 5 assignments, of which 4 must be submitted by you. The assignment for Course 1 is compulsory and every student must attempt this. You are required to do the assignments for only three courses, out of DCE-2,3,4 and 5. Following is the calendar for submission of assignments: Course 1 Course 2 Course 3 Course 4 Course 5 I- Last Date of Submission of Assignment : For June Examination: 31" March 2011. For December Examination: 30lhSeptember 2011. All assignments must be submitted on or before the date set. All assignments pertaining to any Course must be submitted in one batch. No placemeal submission is acceptable. In case you are not able to keep this deadline in the first year, say 2010, you should submit your assignments in 201 1, 2012 or 2013 that is, you have a total of 1+3 years to submit your assignments. At the commencement of every academic year, your progress will be intimated and you will be asked your plan of studies for that year. At this stage, please ask for the assignment Booklet of that year, not for your year of enrolment. Irrespective of your year of enrolment, you do the assignment in force for the year in which you submit it. Do not plan to take the terminal examination for any course if you have not done the assignments set for it first. You will not be permitted to do so. Instructions for submitting your assignments 1. The answer sheets should be complete in all respects. Make sure you have answered all the questions in an assignment before you submit it. 3. Use only foolscap size writing paper (but not of very thin variety), for writing your answer. 4. Leave 5 cm's margin on the left, top and bottom of your answer scripts so that comments, if any, can be made. 5. Start every assignment on a fresh sheet so that you can prepare separate sets for each block. 6. You should not sent printed articles as your answers to assignments. 7. Marks, 100 Programme: DCE Assignment Code: DCE 1ITMA-2010-2011 1. What is the significance of in-depth knowledge of subject for a creative writer? Does the reader seek information from a piece of creative writing? You may cite examples to prove your point of view. 20 2. Why do you think diary-writing (though a personalized mode of expression) 15 important for a creative writer? 3. Write the opening lines of a story on a topic of your choice. Then, write broadly the story line in a few sentences. 'Thereafter suggest two possible endings for the story. 20 4. Read the poem given below carehlly. Then answer the following questions. Write a feature article on a topic of your choice preferably on women or children (1 000 words). 25 2. What guidelines would you keep in mind while writing an unfavourable 20 review which is fully justified and unbiased (500 words). 3. What is the difference between a travel guide and a travelogue? Discuss (500 words) 20 4. Write short notes on any two of the following in about 250 words each 10 x2= a) Book Fairs b) Good interviews c) Additional tools in features 5. 20 Prepare a questionnaire of 15-20 questions for interviewing a celebrity of your choice. 15 DCE - 3 SHORT STORY Max. Marks: 100 Programme: DCE Assignment Code: DCE 3/TMA/1/2010-2011 1. Picture speak louder than words. Take out a photograph from your album which you feel conveys a story to you. (Attach the photograph-if you can afford to give it awayor take a photocopy and attach w t o your assignment.) Now write an open ended story based on what is seen in your photograph. Let your imagination soar and invest the story with either humour/pathos/emotions/adventure-orwhatever catches your fancy. 25 2. For this activity you will really have to let your creative juices flow. Write an imaginary story for children describing one of the following: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) 3. How the elephant got its trunk How the leopard got its spots How the zebra got its stripes How the giraffe got its long neck Potential sources for an idea for a short story may come from personal experie~iceor from observing people and surroundings. Think of a personally experienced or observed incident and write a short story for children on any one of the following experiences: a) Trapped in an elevator b) Victim of a practical joke c) In an old house, on a stormy night You may make your story humorous,or sad depending on what you can handle better. 25 4. You are walking in the park late in the evening. You are overtaken by two other walkers and you briefly catch their conversation: Walkerl: "When I pulled out the knife it was smeared with blood." Walker 2: "Gosh, what did you do next?" Walkerl: "What could I do? The only option was to ........." Then the walkers overtake you and the conversation goes out of hearing range. Now build up a detective story in which either you are walker 1 or you can be the omnipresent narrator and write out the story. You could also imagine that you are a detective and that you chase the two walkers and somehow find out the whole story. 25 DCE - 4 WRITING FOR MEDIA: RADIO AND TELEVISION Max. Marks: 100 Programme: DCE Assignment Code: DCE 41 TMA/1/2010-2011 Note: We would like to see what you can handle better-humour or pathos? There are 4 questions in this assignment. We would want you to give a humorous slant to any two of them and a tragic foregrounding to the other two. (Remember, it is always possible to convey serious messages in a lighter vein and visa versa.) So take some time and think about which two questions will be treated in a funny/humorous/light -hearted manner. And which two will be taken up in a serious way. Marks will definitely be awarded for creativity while maintaining credibility. 1. Write a radio talk on any one of the following themes: a) Coping with stress. b) Problems of working mothers. 2. Write a radio play revolving around any one of the following: a) My ideal place. b) Uninvited guests How to get along with an enemy C) 3. Write a Public Service Announcement to be relayed over TV on any one of the following topics. Suggest visuals, narration, sound effects and dialogues wherever required. a) Drunken driving b) Helping the under privileged. 25 4. Write a TV documentary for children (10-14 years) on "Value of Trees on our Life". Indicate the visual inserts as well as SFX. 25 DEC - 5 Assignment (WRITING POETRY) Max.
