ICEER 2017 - The 4th International Conference on Energy and
Environment Research
1 - Presentation
ICEER is being held with annual regularity and aims to be a privileged space to discuss current issues
related to Energy and the Environment. This event aims to explore emerging technologies and concepts
in a collaborative way, bringing together engineers, researchers and professionals from different areas.
ICEER 2017 is a joint organization of the School of Engineering (ISEP) of the Polytechnic of Porto
(P.Porto) and the SCIEI, and is held at ISEP, with collaboration of the CIETI and LEPABE research
groups.
2 – Conference location
The city of Porto
Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres,
and registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Its Latin name, Portus Cale, has been
referred as the origin for the name “Portugal”, based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin. In
Portuguese, the name of the city is spelled with a definite article as “o Porto” (English: the port).
Consequently, its English name evolved from a misinterpretation of the oral pronunciation and referred to
as “Oporto” in modern literature and by many speakers.
Porto is one of the oldest tourist destinations in Europe and benefits from a privileged geographic location,
complemented by a modern transport and communications network. The richness of its monumental and
artistic heritage, Port Wine, numerous leisure facilities and its cultural and gastronomic attractions invite

you to visit this contemporary and inspired city well known for its hospitality, friendliness and cosmopolitan
environment.
ISEP Campus
ISEP is one of the top schools of technology in Portugal, and has been pioneering education and research
in Engineering since 1852 and is also a trademark of Porto. Its long history is well documented in the local
museum. From 2015, the ISEP Museum has become part of the Portuguese Museum Network, being the
second museum of Science & Technology that integrated this network, together with the National Museum
of Natural History and Science (that belongs to the University of Lisbon).

purposes, dated 1989; right) Transmission, dated 1888.
The ISEP goal is to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development, by creating and
transmitting applied knowledge. This school has its own special long-established academic environment,
which has been revealed as an important success factor. The several taught subjects are strongly
supported by experimental and practical classes. At the same time, students’ potential is channeled with
the spirit of entrepreneurship, teamwork, out-of-box thinking and technical expertise, key skills for a
successful international career.
ISEP offers a wide range of syllabus in different fields of Engineering, and it serves approximately 6500
students distributed by 14 undergraduate and 12 master courses, which partially justifies the large
attraction of international students.
3 - Past and present ICEER event
In ICEER2016 @ Barcelona, the organization introduced a few changes to increase the quality of this
conference series. We can now say that, thanks to all, participants and organization, ICEER2016 was a
very successful event:
 New topic – Education for Sustainability;

Conference Proceedings – are just being published in Energy Procedia, an Elsevier indexed
publication. Each paper has its own DOI.
2/5
In ICEER2017 @ ISEP, again, we are planning a few more changes. Besides publication of Conference
Proceedings in Energy Procedia:
 Enhance the focus on the Education for Sustainability topic – by inviting experts in Education
for Sustainability in Engineering;

Oral Flash Presentation – Increase the participation of promising works, even if they are at their
very beginning stage of development, by introducing a new model of “poster + oral flash
presentation (3 min)” for those works that seem to be innovative. This will drive the whole
participants towards further collaboration and active participation.

Awards – ICEER traditionally attributes a Best Presentation Award for each session. Depending
on the number and quality of the submitted works, we intend to award:
o
o
o

Social activities – This is one of the most important features of a conference, towards driving
interaction between participants, both during the conference and for future networking:
o
o
o
o

The Best Poster;
The Best Oral Flash Presentation;
The Best Presentation in each session.
Guided tour to the education and research labs @ ISEP;
Welcome reception;
Conference dinner;
Discover Porto – Porto is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We are working on further activities
for those who would like to know a bit more.
Conference publications – This conference intends to be an important place to debate topics
related to Energy and Environment. However, it is also important to disseminate results from our
work. Thus, we have available:
o
o
Conference Proceedings – in the Energy Procedia (4 to 6 pages, check template in the
website);
Journals - Possibility of publication of selected contributions (both
oral and poster presentations), upon extension, in indexed peer
reviewed international journals, some of which with Impact Factor.
We are working close with some publishers and the selection will be
based on the quality of the Submitted Paper. Depending on the main
field, some works will be invited to be extended for submission in
journals – Regular or Special Issue. Formatting will be provided later,
depending on the specific Journal.
o Energies – Open Access journal, 20% discount publication
fee for ICEER2017 participants;
o ChemEngineering – Open Access journal, free publication
for well-prepared manuscripts. Special Issue being proposed;
o Others will be added soon.
