Contrast Blackline Master #1
Contrast
Contrast occurs when people, things, places,
or ideas are presented or described as
opposites.
This technique is used to point out strong
differences. The contrast may also be used to
emphasize an important idea or to develop a
theme.

Contrast Blackline Master #2
Examples of Contrast in Act 1 of Macbeth
Scene 1
The witches say together, “Fair is foul, and
foul is fair.”
Scene 3
The witches say of Banquo, “Lesser than
Macbeth and greater” and “Not so happy,
yet much happier.”
Macbeth says of the witches’ prophecy,
“This supernatural soliciting cannot be ill,
cannot be good.”
What do these contrasts tell you about the
characters that make them? What idea might
Shakespeare be trying to communicate
through these apparent contradictions?

Irony Blackline Master #1
Irony
When irony is present, things are not what
they seem.
Verbal Irony: a character may say one
thing and mean quite the opposite.
Irony of Situation: a character – or we, the
readers – expect a certain result, but
something quite different occurs.
Dramatic Irony: Sometimes we, the
readers, know something that the characters
in the story do not.

Irony Blackline Master #2
Examples of Irony in Macbeth
Act 1, Scene 4
After the former Thane of Cawdor is
executed, King Duncan says of him, “He
was a gentleman on whom I built an
absolute trust.” Soon afterwards he greets
Macbeth, saying that he can never repay him
for his great accomplishments in battle. How
does this contain irony? What kind of irony
is it?
Macbeth tells King Duncan that he has only
done his duty as a servant to the king…and
adds that all servants give him love and
honor. How does this contain irony? What
kind of irony is it?
