Dear Parents and Caregivers and Friends of Silverdale School
“Mr Jones the schools milk truck is coming, April Fool!”
“Mr Jones there’s a spider on your arm. Got you, April Fool!” Just a couple of pranks that
some students played on me yesterday, but then it got me thinking. What an unusual
custom, how did this day of playing silly jokes begin? So I did a little digging in search of
the origins of April Fool’s Day.
As with most old traditions, it is difficult to pin down one reason, but the most generally
accepted explanation can be traced back to the 16th century in France. Up until 1564,
the Julian calendar was used, which observed the beginning of the New Year at the
beginning of April. King Charles IX then declared that France would begin using the
Gregorian calendar, which shifted New Year's Day to January 1.
Not everyone accepted this shifting of dates at the same time. Some believed that the
dates should not be shifted. In other parts of the country, news of the change travelled
slowly and many people in rural areas continued to celebrate the New Year at the
beginning of April. It was these people who became the butt of some April jokes and
were mocked as fools.
It's probably no coincidence that April Fools' Day was celebrated at the same time as
another ancient holiday in ancient Rome, the festival of Hilaria. Hilaria is probably the root
word for hilarity and hilarious, which mean great merriment. It may also be no
coincidence that even today, 1st April is the beginning of the new financial year.
The discovery of new and interesting learning can be a most inspiring experience. Art
Costa in his work, ’16 Habits of Mind’, identified Responding with Wonderment and Awe
and Remaining Open to Continuous Learning as two important elements for a successful
person. We should all be in the business of fostering wonderment and awe through
continuous learning.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As the school’s roll grows, we are finding it increasingly more difficult to hold whole school
events on the same day. Our end of term special PEAKS assembly is just one such
example. In order to allow all students to share their PEAKS challenges we have arranged
for two assemblies to celebrate children’s achievements. The first will be held on Monday
7 April, for Years 1 – 4, followed on Monday 14 April, for Years 5 – 8. Parents are welcome
to join us at these school assemblies. Please note that school assemblies now start at
1:45pm

Congratulations to the Silverdale School Soap Box
Trolley Team for a fantastic effort last Saturday at
the annual Whangaparaoa Rotary Club trolley
derby. Plenty of speed and a few spills, thankfully
not from our drivers. A special mention to Lucy
Pierce, who came 10th and Jade Hunter-Davis
who came 11th. Special thanks must also go to Mr
Turner and Mr Pierce who were the managers
and trolley builders. Big thanks to Mr Williams, Mr
Owen and Mr Coleman who helped on the day.
We should also not forget Neville Brothers Ltd,
who have supported Silverdale School every year
since this event started 5 years ago.
Have a great week

Shout out to all Parents
We are always on the look out for great fundraising ideas that the school can participate
in. If you have any ideas please do not hesitate to email Dani Boyd directly
at [email protected].
The PTA Committee meetings are generally held the 1st Wednesday of every month. We
are always looking for new people to be involved with the committee - more hands make
light work as the saying goes.
Also, you don't have to be a committee member to be a helper of the PTA. As a PTA
Helper you would be sent emails asking for assistance with things like baking or helping
out at an event. If you'd like to be registered as a 'Helper of the PTA' please email Andrea
at [email protected].
CELEBRATING BIKES
This week we would like to see lots of children riding their bike or scooter to school taking
advantage of our lovely weather. The Travel Wise Team will be handing our tokens to
careful riders which can then be placed in the special box in the hall and a draw will take
place at the next assembly.

BIKE TRAINING
Yesterday we went out on the court because we did bike training
with Constable Dave. We learnt how to do hand signals we had
races too. We went in and out of the cones. At the end Constable
Dave set up a track. First we walked it then we rode our bikes. My
bike is a gear bike.

BASKETBALL
The Silverdale Sharpshooters (year 7/8) played the OC Warriors on Monday night and
showed great teamwork. The players are supportive of each other and appreciate that
it’s not just the players scoring baskets that win the game; but also the players that move
the ball down the court and play defensively to prevent the other team from scoring. The
team did a great job at all of those things this week, and won 14-0. Player of the Day was
Callum Seaton.
Our Silverdale Superstars played against the Wentworth Blue’s on Tuesday the 1stApril and
it’s no April fool’s day joke when I say WE WON AGAIN!!
That’s our fourth straight victory and the team are now playing with real confidence.
The Wentworth Blues never really had a look in on the court today and even though they
managed to sink 3 hoops our Silverdale Superstars controlled the play from the start
hooter. It was another display of solid defence, quick passing, lightning fast dribbling and
fantastic team work.
The final hooter was sounded and we took the game with 18 points to 6.
Another BIG cheer for Mr Bateman our star coach and Rickie Cameron was awarded
player of the day.
Sam Carter set the scoreboard alight with 5 hoops!
Next week, Tuesday the 8th April, our team faces up to team “Kingsway Wildcats”. Is a fifth
straight victory on the cards for the Silverdale Superstars? I think so!
Go Silverdale Superstars GO.
Regards,
Stuart Holder
The sunset
Wow look at the sunset. The sunset was like gold. It was glimmering like Queen Elizabeth’s
crown once it had been polished a dozen times. The colour of the sunset was red as blood
glistening in the sky. Immediately it vanished and it became night.
By Rea Leakey Year 4
The sunrise
I perch on the side of my relaxing bed and look
at the gleaming sun. The lovely sun looks like a
magnificent huge ball of flames that is about to
burst up in the sea blue sky.
By Charlotte Harris Year 4
The sunrise
I scanned the brightly coloured sky searching for the golden sun. I squinted at it. Suddenly
the glistening water like sparkling sequins caught my eye. The sky was buttercup yellow,
peach, orange and crimson. The sun reflected on the dazzling water.
By Niamh Platts-Mills Year 4
The sunset
I gazed at the sun while it was declaring it was going to
sleep. I saw the moon rising in the distance. The clouds
looked like sheep trotting across the clear blue sky. The
stars were attractive like torches flickering in the night.
The trees looked like polite people waving at me. I knew it
would be a great day tomorrow. A thought hit me and I
felt I would have magnificent dreams. I loved my
afternoon in the sunset.
