This year Presidents Day falls on February 20th, exactly one month after the Inauguration. Presidents Day started off as Washington’s Birthday, which was celebrated throughout the 1800s and became a federal holiday in 1879. But George Washington is not our only President who was born in February. We have had 4 presidents born in February: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, William Henry Harrison, and Ronald Reagan. It wasn’t until 1971 that the nation started to celebrate each of our Commanders in Chief when Richard Nixon signed the observance of Presidents Day into law as the 3rd Monday of February. This was a shift from the holiday being on Washington’s birthday of February 22nd. Many groups choose Presidents Day as their day for staging celebrations and reenactments. And leading up to the holiday public school children learn about former and current presidents during their history lessons. So what about you? Do you do anything special or have you in the past to commemorate our presidents? All About February February by the Numbers 39. Please join us for the New Resident Lunch to meet our Resident Council officers and other residents. Welcome; we’re glad you came! Monday, February 13. Resident Sandi Bhatia- President Marie Gerety- Vice President The Resident Council meetings are held on the last Tuesday of the month at 3:00 p.m. Next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 28. Here, the residents are being quizzed on the state capitols. No surprise: they aced it! Feeding our bodies before we feed our brains! January’s theme for the Circle of Friends was “Great Explorations.” We learned about the explorations of the North and South Poles, outer space, and under sea. For our lunch outing, we dined at the Armadillo Palace and enjoyed the décor, which included the mounted heads of many large animals, some of whose relatives were being served on the table! What a frigid start to the new year we had! Thankfully, we had the heat turned up in the Neighborhood and we enjoyed reminiscing about a time when our residents couldn’t enjoy many of our modern luxuries. It’s neat to think of our residents as living encyclopedias; they have so much to teach us if we take the time to listen and learn! Health Boost Your Circulation for Stronger Heart Health More than 75 percent of women sometimes, often or always experience cold hands or cold feet, which may be a symptom of poor circulation. In a January 2007 Harris survey, 80 percent of the women surveyed said they found these symptoms to be at least somewhat bothersome. Beyond the nuisance factor, these symptoms may indicate health concerns. For example, poor circulation can trigger health problems or aggravate existing conditions, such as diabetes and cardiac complications. Other symptoms of poor circulation include numbness or tingling in the extremities and changes in the color of the skin. Improve your circulation by: Eating a healthy, balanced diet. Include plenty of low-fat foods. Exercising more. Even a short daily walk helps get muscles moving and the heart pumping. Kicking the habit. Smoking can aggravate poor blood circulation. —NewsUSA Ceramics Class at the JCC Thank you to the Jewish Community Center for welcoming our residents. We had a great time making our own ceramic pieces from clay. Sam enjoyed working with his hands. Linda and Barbara wanted to make sure their bowls had plenty of designs. Stacy showed us new techniques to make our pottery beautiful. Poetry Corner with Carolyn Moss Elizabeth Barrett Browning Adapted from Sonnet 43 How to I love thee? Let me count the ways, I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace... I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. I love thee...with my childhood’s faith. I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life!and if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. Since February is Valentine’s month, I chose Browning’s love poem for her husband Robert Barrerr Browning for my Poetry Corner. The Belmont Scene Our monthly Faithful Paws pet therapy visitors. Sara working on the blueberry cheese pastries. Zeut, the baby alligator, visited us with the Houston ZooMobile. The trivia circle keeps growing. Having fun in ceramics class.
